What we heard: After months of uncertainty, plans for the forthcoming E3 are finally gelling. Hard evidence of that fact has been emerging in the form of invitations to after-hours events being held in conjunction with the expo.

One such invite all but officially confirmed that one of the most talked-about games from a prior E3 will be resurfacing this year. This morning, selected editors at select games press outlets received a semimysterious invitation for a function on the night of July 10.

Sent through an external media company, the black invite (pictured above) was a simple card with the event locale and serial number on the back over the PlayStation logo. On the front, the invite has a picture of a Hellghast, one of the Nazi-like villains in the PlayStation 2 sci-fi shooter Killzone--and its still-unnamed sequel on the PlayStation 3. (The Hellghast also appeared in Killzone: Liberation for the PlayStation Portable.)

Many are taking the invite as proof that the new Killzone will be at this year's E3. Any further doubts were largely dispelled by the fact the Federal Express envelope the invitation came in bore the words "Killzone 2 Invitation" on the front.

If true, it will be the first public showing of the new Killzone other than its controversial E3 2005 trailer and a brief tech-demo trailer at the 2007 Game Developers Conference, where Sony promised more details about the game at E3. According to European press reports, the Guerilla Games-developed shooter is the most expensive entertainment project in Dutch history, with a budget of over $20 million.

The official story: Despite mounting proof that the new Killzone will be shown at E3, Sony Computer Entertainment America remains tight-lipped. "We have not relayed any news about Killzone 2 for E3 at this point," a rep told GameSpot. "The invitation you saw is for a very exclusive media event."

Bogus or not bogus?: Almost assuredly not bogus, but the world won't know for sure until July 10.

This game makes me nervous that they are putting this much money in it. I played the first game and it really was not that great. Definitely not Halo and I am not a Halo fan. I just hope that it really does live up to all the hype that has been mounting for the game.

I hope it's better than the first one. It totally sucked and wasn't anything like Sony promised. Even the guys working on the first game said all the cool stuff was changed for undisclosed reasons. Sounds like someone in an authoratative position screwed around with things he or she had no business messing with. Could Killzone 2 actually be the "Halo Killer" everyone was promised in the first game? Don't count on it.

    Another thing

How can you say 'too late for this' what do you mean? because of Halo3? You shouldn't dismiss something before its even out.

Its a game coming out for a console which has only been out for a comparably short amount of time and its a devoted game to PS3 meaning the graphics could be better. I'll reserve comment on that till its out...but too late??? Never! Xbox 360 fanboys stay out.

I was REALLY surprised when people on GS said that Kilzone 1 was no good. I personally loved the game, especially the multiplayer against bots. If they release in-game footage then I will be pleased but if its more rendered video then I'll be dissapointed.......but will buy it anyway because its the game I wanna play not the videos.

    Can't wait.

ps. HMV.co.uk state it will be released on 8/8/2007 in UK but I'm not sure. We'll see on E3 hopefully...

i had this dream where i was playing killzone on the playstation 3, but instead of being a FPS, it was a 3rd person shooter kinda like gears of war, but i also had the option of switching to FPS mode. Talk about killing two birds with one stone *ducks*. it was just a dream! damn does the real world sucks or what, anyway i hope that dream becomes true

Just to let u all know this game will look just like unreal tournament, not that cg intro u saw at e3 last year. but at this point people won't care they just want something to play. Realize sony is not saying anything about the game because they know they put there foot in there mouths. Too cocky.

Merodach Ah yes the great white hope of the PS3. Several things have to happen to make this game succesful.
1: Graphics have to prove PS3 is more powerul than 360. That whole argument hinges on this game, if it's doesn't look better than gears or call of duty 4 that claim goes out the window
    2. If it doesn't look exactly like the trailer fanboys wont ever let PS3 live that down, public perception is at stake.
3:It has to be more fun than bioshck, halo 3, haze, and call of duty 4 combined. Lets face it, FPS fans have already seen and heard great things if KZ2 doesn't bring something new to the table it'll be reduced to an honorable mention at best.
    Good luck Sony
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now, this is a wild guess at best but here's the way I think this is gonna play out:

The day will come when we FINALLY see KillZone 2 on store shelves.
However, it won't look as beautiful as the trailer portrayed it to be.
Yes go ahead and flame me but when things don't go as planned the Sony Fanboys will start spitting out excuses like:

    1. Graphics: "thats because developers can't unlock the awsome power of the PS3!"
-and ofcourse that's rediculous because this game would have had 3 + years with the PS tech which is MORE than enough time to utilize the power potential.

    2. Trailer/game: "It's just a trailer, u guys take everything literally"
-yeah we do because if I heard correctly back in 2005, there was talk of how the game would play better than what we all were seeing on that screen straight from the PR's mouth.

I was amazed by the trailer back in '05 when we all were speculating on what we were gonna be able to play on these new "next gen" machines.
But like everything in life, the machines have come and it's been over a year (about 2 years) now and yet we still haven't seen any NEXT GEN games.
I got the machine guys now give me a game will ya?!
Sigh....by the time we all get the killer games we were all promised, we'll all be gearing up for the next wave of machines.....

The first was a bit deriative and glitchy in its lust to "Kill Halo". I hope the graphics are good enough to satisfy people who saw the prerendered video.

It's laughable that people genuinely believe this game will destroy Halo in terms of gameplay and sales. Halo: Combat Evolved has gone down in history as one of the best games ever made, because it revolutionized the FPS genre. Killzone 2 will probably be pretty good, like Resistance: Fall of Man, but it won't be anything more than a graphical showpiece for the PS3. Anyone that expects this game to be the best FPS ever made just from seeing a CG trailer really is in denial.

It will be a big disappointment if Killzone 2 doesn't come close to it's CG trailer. I think arguably Motorstorm came reasonably close to it's CG counterpart, so if KZ2 can do at least the same it will be a success for a machine that currently lacks in the software department.

People should realize that if a game trailer looks to good to be true...then it's probably computer generated. As I always say..." I don't believe any trailer is actual in game footage until the disc is spinning away in the machine in front of me, and i'm controlling what's going on on screen".

"Crystall3d: all belief on sony is tied up about this game , if this game cant hold its promises as good or better than motorstorm did , things will get worse for sony"

Motorstorm didn't live up to all the promises, the clips shown months before release were way better than the finished product, and they've only just added features to the game that should have been there in the first place, this will have to do a lot better than Motorstorm to even consider regaining any respect Sony have lost for treating consumers like something they trod in.

I hope they show actually gameplay this time around. PS3 really needs this game to be good, but I'm worried they are rushing it for a September release. Looking at all the time Bungie is putting into Halo 3, I hope the Killzone development team isn't going to release an unfinished game.

Xaovagon Killzone 2 will annihilate Halo III, killzone 1 was awesome no matter what

I think your giving it a little too much credit. Dont get me wrong, i liked the original, but i felt it was just too unpolished. I didnt find the story particularly interesting, and felt that the gameplay was too repetitive. I'm looking forward to the sequel, and it may persuade me to get a PS3, but this is no Halo killer, at least not what weve seen so far. Yes, it has shiny graphics, but the original also had very good graphics, and still got bashed by almost every review. Unless the game makes some leaps and bounds with story and gameplay, then this will just be a sub standard sequel to a rather poor game. Anyone calling this a Halo killer really is a fool, and has to play halo before making a judgement on it. Having played both i can say that halo is far superior to killzone, as it is more fun focused, whereas killzone went for more of a serious theme. And lets not forget, many people (myself included) have already played Halo 3 via the Beta. Sure it was only multiplayer, but it gave a sense of the gameplay which will feature in the game. All we've seen so far of Killzone 2 is a Pre Rendered trailer showing what the game might look like. Lets wait till we play, or at the least see gameplay before we make Fanboy comments.

Im not dragging the game down but im kind of not thinking this will 'look' like anything like the trailer, it was pre-rendered CGI, not in game footage. If you look at a game like Crysis, its beats both PS3 and 360 games in terms of grahpics, the console hardware doesnt match the PC hardware, the Cel might be powerfull, but the graphics in the PS3 or 360 for that matter match the Current graphics for top fo the range PC's. So dont be to dissapointed when you see its nothing like the trailer.
