WOW South Park gets Emmy nod

Given that a posse of foul-mouthed grade-schoolers are the subject of Comedy Central's long-running series South Park, it's only natural that the show intersects with the world of gaming on occasion. In its most recent season, games played a significant role in a handful of episodes. An impatient Cartman attempted to cryogenically freeze himself rather than endure the wait for Nintendo to release the Wii in the two-parter "Go God Go," and the whole gang became hopelessly addicted to Blizzard Entertainment's hit massively multiplayer online role-playing game in "Make Love, Not Warcraft."

Today, the World of Warcraft episode garnered the series its sixth Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Animated Program (for Programming Less Than One Hour) category. Fellow nominees include Robot Chicken's "Lust for Puppets," The Simpsons's "The Haw-Hawed Couple," SpongeBob SquarePants' "Bummer Vacation," and Avatar: The Last Airbender's "City of Walls and Secrets."

While South Park has been nominated multiple times in the past, it has only won the category once. That win came in 2004 for "Best Friends Forever," the episode in which Kenny is chosen as a holy warrior for his skill at a PlayStation Portable game, then slips into a coma while his friends fight over whether or not they should pull the plug. Games also played a role in one of the show's other Emmy-nominated episodes, "Chinpoko Mon," a thinly veiled parody of the Nintendo-owned Pokemon phenomenon.

To those who say the Simpsons hasn't been funny for ages obviously hasn't watched the show for ages. South park has been consistently great for a long time now. The WoW episode was fantastic because it poked fun at the reality that people become obsessed playing the game.... and at the end of the day, for what? Brilliant.

South Park is the funniest show i have ever seen. It covers all the big or funny issues in the world and mocks them or makes them funnier than they already are. With a bunch a bad-mouth 4th graders realy puts this show over the top.... sometimes in a negative way..... but its still the best show i have ever seen on comedy central.

Ah, that had to be one of the best SP episodes ever, ive seen it at least like 5 times and it is still funny every time.
The funny thing is people actually take games that seriously and when you see them its just so funny.

south park is a terrible show on every critiquable level. it's not funny and it goes to incredibly lengths to be vulgar without actually getting anywhere. the fact that it's getting a friggin' emmy's gotta say something...

the way they did the episode was masterful. It was like that ninja episode they did only with WOW, though it was missing the awesome shot of butter getting his eye split in both the fantasy/real world with the ninja star.

Saying The Simpsons hasn't been funny since Season 10 isn't entirely accurate; it has certainly declined quite a bit since then, but there are still at least a few jokes in each episode and a few episodes each season that remind you how great the show used to be, and from what I've seen the show seems to have been getting better over the past couple years. It will never be what it was 10 years ago again, but I don't think there's anything that could be that good again (which is including South Park, which, although a very funny show, isn't to that level, and it's over-reliance on lowbrow humor and topical references mean that most of the episodes won't hold up into the future).

My hopes for The Simpsons Movie stem almost entirely from the fact that John Swartzwelder had a major part in writing it, and he is the greatest comedy writer who ever lived, with the possible exception of Douglas Adams. He wrote 59 of the 400 episodes that have been made so far, all of them at least good, and most of them brilliant. At least 7 of my top 10 were written by him, and he's written some great comedic novels since then, with How I Conquered Your Planet being one of the funniest things ever. And BTW, The Simpsons isn't ending after the movie, they've got contracts for at least one more season and since it is the 19th I would assume at least one more after that if only to hit the big 2-0.

I'm assuming most of you that say The Simpsons sucks haven't seen or don't remember what the show used to be. Seasons 3 through 9 were the best seasons of anything ever, and the show didn't have a bad episode until at least the 11th season. There is a reason the show has been on so long and why Fox is so reluctant to end it.

In the first 9 or so seasons of the Simpsons it was hard to find an episode that you didn't like. Now it's hard to find an episode worth sitting through. Hopefully the movie will be worth seeing as it will probably be the last animated full length movie that is not computer generated.

Good for them. MLNW was an awesome episode. I hope they show a good clip when the emmys air, something like the "How do you kill that which has no life" scene or the "This may be teh end of the world... Of Warcraft."

I think "Make Love Not Warcraft" was one of the best south park episodes ever, the only one better was "Trapped In The Closet", but that one isn't aired anymore so lots of people don't get to see it, and it apparently is the reason Isaac Hayes left, but in an interview he said he was fine with them making fun of Scientology before he quit. and Phazevariance you said that robot chicken was more explicit than south park, but in one episode didn't Cartman (sorry if this offends anyone but sense most of the people who read this watch the show) Masturbate a dog, or something like that?

Heh heh, I love that episode of Robot Chicken. The WoW episode is probably the best episode of South Park in over 5 years. That's not saying much, but it was a hilarious episode. Don't know why King of the Hill never wins...

The Warcraft episode was simply brilliant and hilarious. Robot Chicken at least still has some fresh and original skits on its show. As for the Simpsons, it's been boring for the longest time. I would rather they just cancel the damn show instead of releasing The Simpsons Movie.

I watched both the South Park and Avatar: TLA episodes, and they are both shows I'd like to watch win the award. South Park wins my vote in terms of humor and comedy, and Avatar is just an excellent show overall. Everyone says these other shows are great, but has anybody really watched Avatar from beginning to end? This is a show that only comes once a lifetime, imho.
