With a solid cast and a decent budget, hopes were high for the big-screen adaptation of the classic id Software shooter Doom. However, when the film hit theaters in the summer of 2005, it wasn't exactly a box-office BFG. The poorly reviewed film only grossed $28 million at US theaters, thanks to a backlash by gamers against the liberties it took with the source material's plot.

A good portion of the blame for the Doom disappointment goes to director Andrzej Bartkowiak (Romeo Must Die, Cradle 2 tha Grave). However, in the tradition of Paul W. S. Anderson (Resident Evil, AVP: Alien vs. Predator), the filmmaker's failure is being rewarded with another job--on another game adaptation, no less.

Variety is reporting that Bartkowiak has been picked to direct a new movie based on Street Fighter. Partially financed by Capcom as part of its effort to branch out into Western media, the project will begin filming next year with Ashok Amritraj and Patrick Aiello of Hyde Park Productions. It will be the second live-action feature based on the fight-game franchise. The first was 1994's Street Fighter, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, as well as Raul Julia in his final role.

omg...why not just make a movie on tetris...at least you know nobody will watch it. People are actually going to watch this and make him enough money off of it to actually make other movies...sad sad day

I can imagine it now... Guile just coming up and shouting "GET TO THE CHOPA!"
Anyway... This does not look good. It's a game-to-movie adaption... it's a sequal... and it's directed by the guy who did Doom. This movie will most likely suck.

Don't you dare Trash my favorite series Street Fighter 1-2-3-4 But a movie based on Chun Li/? Why? I'd rather have a story about Ken & Ryu teacher? not sure how that will turn up? And as for G.I. JOE the version that is based on the 1983 GI-JOE's to 86- of GI.JOE this is what the kids of the 80's have been waiting for! And!.damn it! How do you know that the movie will suck anyway do you have a way to see the future? Really?.August 9th 2009 is going to be a great day for all the grown up fans waiting patiently for 19 years since the Franchise gave up on us back in 1987. it switched over to a totally different story etc. But- Snake Eyes was the coolest idea ever! and by the way the 80's franchise still is a seller! But it does deserve a movie G.I JOE! Yo Joe! unlike that stupid Pokemon crap!

As bad as this movie is going to be, do you honestly think it could be any worse than the in-works G.I. Joe movie? The very one where the kid from Third Rock is going to be playing Cobra Commander, who was a former Joe himself?

btw. Jean-Claude Van Damme sucked. learn you're movie culture idiot. he barely got blood sport up and running. the hollywood film industry is falling apart because of people like jean-claude. people wouldn't watch it anywhere in the world but the states. he literally begged a few men to pay for it's distribution in the states. as for the old street fighter, he played a horrible guile. there are mediocre actors with one leg that can act with more talent than jean. he just sucks people. a few alright half assed films. his imprint in history are a result of marketing. that's all. don't be a puppet. this director sucks too. these are all B-Rated people. the sad part is they both aimed for A films. B film makers who stay in their niche can actually be extremely good. look at quinten tarantino. the guy's brilliant. so is Robert Rodriguez, in spite of his few failures. these people are talented because they don't have delusions of grandeur, they have their heads in an accurate perception of reality. this guy, on the other hand, has his head up his own ass. this film better be good, but i won't expect much. in fact... i won't even go to see it in theaters. DOA was horrid enough to scare me away from videogame films forever.

this is absolutely retarded. WHAT THE HELL!? honestly!? why... why do producers pull these stunts. they can't say it's for the fu**ing money because they'd roll in WAY more dough with a better directer than this idiot. i can make a better movie (seriously i can, isn't that sad?) why? this has to be a producer stunt. i wish i got a chance to talk to this idiot.

    may be interesting...

would prefer another animated movie though... let's wait and see how well it does before rambling on about useless banter guys

Jean-Claude Van Damme was an excellent Guile. the movie simply wasn't all that good. too many plot holes and weak points. love to see Van Damme again, was an awesome actor back in the day, made some poor choices, but can still get the job done

WHEN!? when will the figure out that Video games movies 9 times out of 10 suck? DOA was a TERRIBLE movie. The plot was all wrong, the characters were even worse. DO NOT give the responsibility of making a game FOR gamers to a NONE gamer. You'd THINK that would be common sense. But then i look at DOA, and i cry.

Darkstalkers would be much better for a movie... who would play B.B. Hood??? Maybe even Onimusha, or maybe not, because that's one series Capcom hasn't ruined with movies yet. Anyways, this looks like it's going to bomb like no other. Why doesn't Hollywood understand that the rule is most game-to-movie adaptations are going to suck. I just hope that the Halo movie changes that ideal, or maybe the rumored Warcraft movie (that would be a definite CG).

P.S.--they changed the main character for the new movie... it's dan hibiki!

I barely remember this movie. When I saw it I thought it was ok, but when I think about it now it wasn't. But just because that didn't do so well doesn't mean this one will follow suit. It is 13 years later so they should be able to at least make it ok. It cannot do worst than bloodrayne now that was a distasteful movie.

If it sucks, let it suck! Movies based on games with no real story usually don't do well. But who cares as long as we can see Ken kick some behind again. Maybe more this time than in 94.

....Yep, again, the world weeps. just look at this comment board. can somebody show me ONE positive comment about this story, because I can't find it. That's your cue, Hollywood, to stop pumping out crap that tarnishes the reputations of games, you, and directors who may otherwise possibly have had better luck with different source material. I thought they would have learned by now. There is no underestimating the stupidity of some people sometimes. I bet they think they're giving the world exactly what they want and this is a brilliant idea. Wake up.

Why is it that good film make bad games and good games always make bad films. Whats going on can`t the film makers actually play the game and see how much imagination and effort has gone into games and can`t game makers watch the films that they are trying to recreate. Man if I had the money.

Yuck! he's like that guy who made the Bloodrayne movie, who had the cheek to blame the story, not his directing skills on that sad effort. Game-to-movie and movie-to-game adaptations don't usually hit the spot with me (unless its animated... the animated street fighter movie and final fantasy: advent children were pretty decent)
