Beginning at 9 a.m. today, GameSpot will begin handing out its 100,000 Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer beta keys to Xbox 360 owners. Firing off in bursts of 20,000 a day, the giveaway extends the entire week and is open to all registered GameSpot users in North America and the UK. To play, Xbox 360 owners with a Gold membership must simply download the beta client from Xbox Live and plug in their access key.
Diverging from the heavily trodden WWII setting, the latest Call of Duty from Infinity Ward enlists players in modern-day warfare. As detailed in GameSpot's recent coverage, COD4's multiplayer allows for 16-player maps over various game modes, as well as stat tracking, "persistence points" for accomplishments, "experience points" to unlock weapons for advanced players, and extensive clan support. COD4 deploys November 4 on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. It is rated M for Mature.
Gamers less concerned with how realistically their foes crumple to the ground may also want to check out the demo for Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. As promised last week, a free trial of Splash Damage's frag-friendly shooter is now available on GameSpot.
The online PC demo contains the final version of Valley, which has undergone further balancing from when it was first seen in ET:QW's open beta test. The multiplayer sampler puts the Global Defense Force on the attack as they attempt to take a Strogg-held water treatment facility. ET:QW will ship for the PC on October 2 in North America, and September 28 in Europe and Australia. (PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions have also been announced, but their release dates are unclear.) It is rated T for Teen.
