What we heard: It's been nearly three and a half years since the Ninja Gaiden series made its triumphant return. Since then, the critically lauded Xbox remake was rereleased in 2005 with new content as Ninja Gaiden Black, and then graphically upgraded and further expanded for this year's PlayStation 3 port, Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

But while the resurgent adventures of shadow warrior Ryu Hayabusa have spawned an all-new DS game, Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword, many have been wondering when a true Ninja Gaiden sequel would arrive. Though he would not confirm a sequel outright, Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki has declined to deny assertions in the gaming press that his shop is working on Ninja Gaiden 2.

Today, though the proof was in the pudding--blood pudding, to be more precise. An eagle-eyed poster on gaming-news bazaar/loosely controlled riot NeoGAF posted a series of screenshots he or she claimed to have taken from an official product page on the Japanese version of Xbox.com. Though the page was, unsurprisingly, quickly pulled down, the authentic-looking screenshots show a far bloodier and gorier game than the ultraviolent original.

Embossed with the official Xbox 360 logo, the pictures show Hayabusa not only dispatching foes, but also dismembering and, in one case, beheading them. In one shot, the master ninja is seen lopping off a foe's arm in a cloud of arterial spray worthy of the teahouse massacre in Kill Bill or one of its Japanese filmic inspirations, such as the Lone Wolf and Cub series.

The official story: "At this time we are not commenting.--Microsoft rep. "Sorry, I can't comment on that."--Tecmo rep.

Bogus or not bogus?: Either not bogus--or an incredible job of fakery.

[UPDATE] Ninja Gaiden 2 has been officially confirmed. So now that the question of "if" there will be a Ninja Gaiden is answered, gamers can now excitedly ask, "when?"

    Anywho.... hehehe.... I knew the game I've been wishing to come out since the 360 launched had finally will finally reveal itself.

    Arrive with a thorough completion in your production, Ninja Gaiden 2.

    i can't belive what im seeing...is this real? (rub eyes and looks at pictures again) this is going to be a great game. i hope they don't water it down and ruin the concept.

    at last, Ninja Gaiden 2, now the king of 3d action game is finally back!!
    and by the way too much blood is not exactly a good thing in my opinion, well, great fun for the whole family I guess.

    Um what? Previous NGs never had whole body cutting, leg cutting, crotch stabbing stuff. Also, this is still early, Halo 3's graphics came a long way since beta, NG2 has time to do that also.

    And if you check the european-like cities' backgrounds, you will already notice how much of an improvement it is. Nice detail and lighting there.

    We haven't even seen this in action yet, and from the previews, like from IGN, clearly state that this game looks hectic, chaotic, faster, and just full of win.

    Aye, original Ninja Gaiden had decapitations all over the place. Oh, and making 360 games and PS3 games in one development cycle is not as easy as PS2/Xbox developing was, so... expect to see this on the PS3 just not until around a year later.

    The good news is that MS understands that the game also has to appeal to casual gamers and unskilled gamers so there will definitely be a difficulty level that suits us novice Ninjas. I can't wait for this game. NG was the 4th game I ever bought for my Xbox so this is great news to me.

    I dont understand why everyone is so amazed.

    the graphics look exactly the same. aside from some extra blood, you were already able to decapitate and cut a body in half with power moves.

    Part one paved the way graphically. it was so ahead of its time in that department, that the PS3 version isnt much upgraded aside for some extrabumps and polys.
    part 2 needs to be the same way.

    This is gonna be sweet, can't wait for it to come out. Hopefully it is gonna be the same difficulty as last time, if not more difficult. Maybe online fighting between ninjas, might be sweet.

    All ideas of it being a PS3 multiplatform were smashed when it was shown...

    It isn't TECMO publishing it this time, it is Microsoft... Kinda sucks for the ps3 owners who don't have 360's =(.

    Although the game looks really good, but the hack and slash thing has increased so much that, Ryu is now looking like a blood hungry barbarian and no more a disciplined ninja.

    they're real pics, at the announcement they commented on leaked photos, also, the game looks good, but the specular and other stuff is really over-done and ugly

    the real trailer is on xbl marketplace stating 360 exclusivity (for now) ima still gat it for the 360, cause ur port cant beat my achievements son»

    Only For XBOX 360... Ninja Gaiden 2... and is true. Sorry PS3. But you can't play this game on a PS3. Is too much for the PS3. You need 2 PS3 to play this game... jajajajajaja.

    omg....I cant believe team ninja wanted to make it for 360...damn it....I have a ps3 and a 360 but I would rather have the game made for a more powerful system so it could have better graphics....now the game is limited by 360 hardware man damn.
