Source: Digital Battle reported on the details, citing a leaked .pdf file sent to the site by a tipster.

What we heard: Digital Battle's article is based on a .pdf file with a features list for the unannounced Battlefield 3. The site said the file appeared to be intended for Electronic Arts investors, who supposedly should receive it by December. More than 20 bullet points paint a picture of the next full installment in EA's multiplayer military first-person shooter series, starting with its expected release date in late 2008.

According to the article, the game will be set in the modern day (like Battlefield 2), with an emphasis on Middle Eastern settings and support for up to 40 players per team on eight different maps. For the numbers crazy, each of Battlefield 3's two factions will have access to its own assortment of 24 different vehicles and 17 different weapons. The game will also supposedly feature unlockable equipment, customizable characters, and in-game replay functionality.

While the article says the game won't launch until the end of next year, gamers might get a crack at a possible public beta in the summer. However, the leaked info suggests the game will only be released for Windows Vista PCs and the Mac's OS X, with Windows XP users left out in the cold. An announcement for the game--along with a teaser trailer--are pegged by the article as coming in January.

While there's not a whole lot of evidence backing this story up (Digital Battle is not posting the .pdf, citing legal concerns), the list of features given for this Battlefield 3 doesn't sound especially out of the ordinary. By the time the supposed release date rolls around, it will have been three years since the last full installment in the series and two years since the Battlefield 2142 spin-off. The lack of XP support may be an irritant for some PC gamers but will be more and more commonplace going forward, especially into late 2008. Meanwhile, the OS X version makes sense considering EA pledged more Mac support at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this year.

The official story: An EA representative had not returned request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Tentative not bogus.

IT WAS 'SET FOR 2008' PEOPLE. IT WAS BAD COMPANY.

I hope this isnt made for consoles. Console gamers already have the Bad Company series.

Dice spending time developing this for consoles is only going to make the PC version dumbed down.

Not supporting XP would be a mistake. It would be cutting out a significant group of PC gamers, and therefore, BF3 would sell less copies.

Spudals01, All windows operating systems are backwards compatible with the older versions, but not forward compatible, meaning that if XP can run a program, so can Vista and Windows 7, but just because Windows Vista can run a program, it doesn't mean that XP can run it, get my drift?

    theres one problem though...
it said it will only be on vista and not xp, by the time it is released windows 7 will be out. So they should make it compatible with windows 7 aswell cause tons of people are gonna be upgrading!

40 players sounds pretty good, but i thought they'd go up by doubling like they always do, meaning 128, 64-on-64 player battles. that'd be the biggest and best shooter around until MAG comes out.

BF3 please COD series is weak with their maps, solid game play but the maps are way too small i want to have to lead my running targets and aim quite high to pull off the perfect across map snipe like was possible with Kubra Dam.

    on the side note:

I installed vista 64 ultimate may last year and have not had any problems with my computer at all, aside from one issue i get with L4D but i believe that to be just a display driver issue that im too lazy to fix because the problem doesnt occur that often. i loved XP and i love Vista 64 ultimate never had an issue its all about doing your research and getting the supported drivers guys wake up.

lol juztrax you have no idea what you're talking about... XP from the day of release had very few stability problems, performance issues, and memory leaks which still have not been corrected to this very day. Surely, if you run Vista as you say you do, you are aware of such issues that have not been fixed.... Sure, you needed another 32mb RAM to be able to do anything in XP as compared to Windows 2000, but that was IT! Unlike Vista, where you need 4gb+ RAM to equal 2gb in XP and have to reboot cause of memory leaks and whatnot. I'd just as well go back to Windows 98...

You can do everything on XP you can do in Vista... or Windows 7 for that matter. The same will be true when Windows Vista and 7 are old.

Oh don't worry, this one won't be nearly as evasive. DICE said in a PC Gamer issue 'round April that they're working on 5 Battlefield titles right now: Heroes, 1943, Bad Company 2, and two as-of-yet unannounced ones, one of which is bound to be 3. Don't worry, DICE will deliver.

Ranger92998 Posted Feb 11, 2009 3:54 am GMT +8 ok...first off..all the vista haters, you are lost...xp is an outdated program which was good for its time, but still outdated none the less...there are more xp users than vista? whatever you are smoking, pass it on...Vista has been the main OS for well over three years now...and every vista hater I know, once they try it never go back...there will come a time where xp will not be supported ( oh yea thats right they arent anymore lol)
unless your computer is really old, there isnt a reason not to use vista. I have had NO issues with vista, and Ive used it on four machines of my own so far...works like a champ...and yes there is a difference between dx9 and 10....if your smart enough to update your machines hardware, you should do the software too...

BF3 is a pipe dream guys...ive religiously played every bf that has come out, and as disappointed as I am, it seems EA is more interested in the kiddie consoles than us hard core guys who actually spend money on expansions...until EA wakes up, ill spend my money with thier competitors...Activision has gotten over 400 bucks from me that woulda been EA's if they would have released bf3 instead of bad company for consoles that bombed...bf42,vietnam,and bf2 were all #1 sellers and also #1 server rentals too...how did bf bc do? thats right it bombed...they arent smart enough to know that PC gamers are usually older 18-54 males...whats the prime demographic for advertising and sales? 18-54 males...sales 101...real easy....
Dont hold your breath guys...I expect 43 and bc2 to come out, and they are gonna suck...

Vista is a natural progression...deal with it and try a copy...you will be surprised at how stupid you sound to vista users who know better...ignorance is no reason to scream about vista...wake up and welcome to the 21st century...oh and btw, vista sp2 is being released..

I have a buddy beta testing 7 right now...its nothing more than what windows 2000 was to Me....its not going to be a replacement for Vista, hate to tell you...As stated before, yes vista had its issues on its release, but once sp1 came its a smoothe program with easier to use features. Even BF2, which is not tested on vista, works like a champ. in fact it runs better...remember when bf2 had issues with AA?not in vista...remember when vista had issues with XFI??not in vista...truth is it runs smoother...as far as BF3, well since 07 there have been rumors flying about this, and none are ever true..if BF3 were comming would dice be working on BFBC2??no lol...they dont have the resources to do that many projects at one time....as much as I wish I were wrong, there will be no BF3, even EA stated that there is no project.Just because there are alot of sites stating some untrue facts doenst mean its true...I can point you to 1000 websites that say ashley simpson can sing....see my point??if EA says it isnt happening, its 4 years since bf2 release and nothing yet, and they made another two games since then, its not comming....time to take a look at arma 2 or cod Modern Warfare 2....cause BF3 is nothing more than a pipe dream..now if you want a great football console game or a eyecandy chick game like mirrors edge, theyve got that ready for you..lol

Ranger92998 has all of the reasons to be angry. EA, from my understanding, purchased DICE shortly after the release of Battlefield 2 (PC). They then closed Dice offices in Canada and left the one overseas open. Dice employees I guess left and went to other companies. It's the same sh1t that they do all the time. Another thing that pisses me off is their little NFL marketing scheme. You purchase the exclusive rights to be the only company that can make an NFL football game to get rid of the competition. Why? So you don't have to try as hard to make NEXT YEAR'S Madden as good as it should be if there was competitors? I have not owned a Madden game since the PS2 because of that.

  • pimpstar12345

    Posted Feb 18, 2009 5:52 am PT

If this game is 90% of what BATTLEFIELD 2 (PC) was, it will be GAME OF THE YEAR... But EA is going to mess up like they did with Bad Company...

  • broca

    Posted Feb 16, 2009 1:22 pm PT

Why so angry Ranger92998? I too use Vista and have had no problems but it is also a pointless option to go for right now when Win7 is around the corner...

I also think you'll be eating your words about BF3, Ben Cousins, the executive producer of the whole Battlefield franchise has even stated: "we have to make this a three-pronged assault with the series really.

First, there are consoles. Consoles are really big, we can't ignore them, we have to be on the consoles. Second, there's this casual experiment we're going with Battlefield: Heroes and the third prong is the hardcore PC gaming experience. We've made those in the past and we'll continue to make them in the future. We aren't specifically announcing anything, but we are still going to keep those hardcore gamers very happy."

    BF3 WILL HAPPEN

Well, I probably won't be buying it anyway (sick of modern-day shooters), but if I WAS planning on buying it and it did only release on Vista, then they could kiss my money goodbye. No way I will ever support this "Vista-only" crap. If they want to cut out roughly 70% of their consumer market, then go right ahead.

I am starting to get really nostalgic about the old battlefields, I think it is time for a new PC release. I really miss the old days of BF, in my opinion the newer console releases are not any where near as good as the PC titles. Multiplayer gaming will always be the best on PC, unless consoles TURN INTO PCs. I really miss the EPIC feeling that the PC titles gave me, I haven't got that feeling in a long time.

Asfar as widescreen support. 1.5 patch for 2142 is featuring widesreen...and Im going to assume BF3 does aswell. Frostbite is a cool engine. I played badcompany in the closed beta. lots of fun, I hate consoles, but the engine looks nice. Supports Bullet pen, mostly destructable buildings, and even destruckable terrain. Can't wait for BF3, I own a beast of a computer and look forward to leveling my way to top rank and in the proccess wiping out the population of a small country.

A few things I hope Dice does

A: Use better sound models for weapons, for any one who plays games like Projectreality you understand the diffrence in experiance sound can make for an FPS.

B: Make weapons more accurate, use other methods to impair shootings other than killing weapon functionality. C: Include more optic sets, EOTechs, MARS sights, ACOGs, All of em. Make em all unlocks, but they do repersent large improvements in aiming and should be available ^_^

D: Body Armor *just a thought* Body armor should loose functionality if exposed to massive amounts of damage. Weapons should be deadly. If you get shot 2-3 times you should be DOWN, make body armor more of a factor. It should save your life once, or twice....soldiers should be walking battletanks. Also if you get railed, die, and then get rezzed, your armor should stay broken unless you get to a "reload" hub or like an APC and equip a new set. Just makes sense to me.

    That is all

Yer an XP version would be nice but if this new vista for 2009-2010 is what it is all cracked up to be then there shouldn't be a problem. Also looks like we are going to have better net speed so that it doesn't lag, but Mr Rudd will fix that.
