Wii GHIII fetches $9,100 on eBay

Many games are often said to be worth more than the sum of their parts, but where exactly does that sentiment roof out at? Apparently, for a game that offers a toy guitar and a library of hits that inevitably lead to throwing up the horns, that number is $9,100.01. Last week, an auction for Activision's hotly in-demand Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock for the Wii ended for just such an amount on popular sell-it-yourself site eBay.

Although the seller will undoubtedly be pleased with his return on the $90 game (assuming that the amount is actually tendered out), the auction itself was meant to teach his son a lesson. After hounding retailers for several weeks to land the "Holy Grail of Xmas presents" for his teenaged son, the Canadian grade-school teacher's self-sacrificing efforts were abruptly tainted, according to the auction.

"Then, yesterday, I came home from work early and what to I find? My innocent little boy smoking pot in the backyard with 2 of his delinquent friends," reads the listing (emphasis in original). "As of the time of me writing this, he does not know I got him Guitar Hero 3. I will show him the auction once it is posted and we can watch it finish together. Sort of a 'Father-Son bonding experience.' While I doubt this will keep him from ever smoking pot again, I think it will make him think twice before doing illegal (well I think pot is still illegal in Canada) drugs on my property."

However, it won't be just coal for the young man. Concluding the auction, the father noted, "I am still considering getting him a game for his Nintendo. Maybe something like Barbie as the Island Princess or Dancing With the Stars. These games are in stock everywhere I go, and I know he will just love them."

heres what I'd do to teach my kid a lesson, take his wii on the roof and throw it into the street, and all other systems to boot. Selling a game and earning 9100 for your son isnt a punishment. make the kid cry, rbreak him and rebuild him. or simply kick him out of the house.

"Well, for one thing, pot is illegal, and it leads to schizophrenia over long-term use.... so I can see how the dad would have a problem with his son smoking pot.
Also, you don't hear any stories about kids that don't grow up on drugs or alcohol and that turn out fine... so it's not one or the other (uptight or "GTA FTW" parents)."
u r an idiot, schizophrenia? pshh idk where u get ur antidrug propaganda but that is entirely untrue

What a waste of money, surely there's other ways to teach your children what's right and wrong. and who's paying for it, not the son I can tell you. what a stupid idiot.

thats the saddest story ive heard
    1) at least one person (probly more) would pay $9000 for a crap game when one could simply for it
    2) kids friends are 'delliquent' and his son is innocent
    3) he doesnt want his son smoking pot why? cuz its illegal, he "thinks". yet his kid was good enoiugh to smoke "outside" in the backyard, hardly the house, and although i doubt the kid stays away from alcohol that $#!+ kills a lot more people and ups the crime rate
    4) hes gonna be thankful too his son for making him $9000, unless he can keep quiet but i doubt it
    5) prolly didnt have anyone pay for it or if someone did it was a close riend, and no money really changed
    6) if he really wanted to convey the message just take the wii and give him the game

What's wrong with smoking pot again? Oh, it's illegal. Oh my god. It's almost as bad as using your parent's computer to download music/movies/games, which I'm sure none of you do.

Think of all the pot they can buy for $9,100.

But seriously, does the Dad really think this will stop his son smoking, or make him better at hiding it? Dad is powertripping methinks.

@ Gameweasl: So, this is a false bid, huh? You're exactly right! Way too many ebay hoaxes, especially for my taste!

edit: maybe the dad made a false ad, to vex his son, &/or teach him a lesson.

Finally, some responsible parent doing his job. Except, I sorta pick up a vibe of only caring for himself, when I read the line,"on my property." Still, I can't be too cynical, & for the most part, he sounds like he really does love his son. I believe in forgive, & forget, so I'd probably still let him have GH3 for Christmas. But seeing responsible parenting somewhere in the worlde is nice to see. Very refreashing!

Selling something to punish a kid for bad behavior on Ebay is an old tactic. For some reason, these auctions almost always make more money than traditional ones, so it should be no surprise that a lot of these are fake, though it's very difficult, to prove (or disprove) whether the seller is telling the truth.

Must be a slow news day. If anyone in the gamespot news department would of looked they would of noticed that it was a false bid and they never paid. It also says this seller is from Australia, so go figure. Too many Ebay hoaxes!!!

That's kind of stupid, in my opinion. Honestly, I think that there is something quite wrong with parenting and or the son if he starts to experiment with pot. Maybe I'm one of the very few but I never tried any of that crap (including smoking and drinking) and no one needed to threaten me against it. I'm 20 now, by the way.

That said, I can sort of agree on not giving the game but it should end there. What is the point of buying some other 'worthless' () game just to spite. It will likely end up little to never being played if not lost on the next day, so why waste the money?

Marijuana shouldn't be illegal. Tobacco has more toxins and causes similar (yet less drastic) effects to people. Same for coffee. I believe employers should be able to decide if they want to test for marijuana use as a method for locating good employees, but I don't think the government should regulate the drug.

Crack, heroine, cocaine, ecstasy, ice, acid, and all those hard core drugs should remain illegal because of the health dangers and the fact that people who use them cause harm to themselves and others.

Marijuana makes people laugh and get hungry and their reaction times are slowed. I know people who react slow even when their not high and who don't smoke.

Anyway, I still think what the dad did was a good idea. He believes that "pot" is not good and does not want his kid to do it. I believe that severe punishments are needed for this type of "crime" and selling an anticipated game is a good way to do it.

My guess is that someone say the reason behind the sale and decided to promote it with some charity money. Sure got some attention didn't it? Of course that's speculation and likely not the truth, but why the heck pay over 9 grand for a game you can get for $100 or less?

Omg, get over it. all the people going "this guy is an example of a good parent" are you people that nieve, read this quote, "Then, yesterday, I came home from work early and what to I find? My innocent little boy smoking pot in the backyard with 2 of his delinquent friends,". Ok first of all he obvisouly is a opne sided parent because his "innocent" boy hanging out with his " delinquent" friends, i bet his son is the one who either bought or got the pot. Sure this guy is teaching his kid to follow the rules of living under his fathers roof, but that morale doesn't actually teach anyone anything. Think about it...all it does is teach us how to be a dictator of our own house, which in it self can be selfish depsning on the situation. Just think back to any time you had a friend, relative or room mate living at your house and you tried the set these rules down, even if they were dumb, and think about how the 12 year old self would kick your own @$$ for being such a dictator. If this guy wants to teach his kid not to smoke pot, then he needs to sit down and talk with his kid and maybe give him real life situations and such, not the mumbo jumbo properganda that e people will follow because its a commercial on TV, do you own research and sit down and actually TALK WITH YOUR KIDS! OMG! I know, communicating face to face and verbally is so much work, but yet its the only way thing that actually works. Oh and by the way, if you kid is going to experiment with drugs/pot, its going to happen either way, there is just about nothing you can do, people are not robots and can not be trained, all they can do is be guilded and its your job as a parent to talk with them and guild them on the right path, and also don't try and be a dictator, because you only loss more control of the situtation when you do.
