In 2007, God of War director David Jaffe took a gigantic leap into the unknown with the surprise announcement that he would be cutting ties with Sony Computer Entertainment after nearly 15 years to form his own, independent studio, Eat Sleep Play. His first project? A Sony-published PlayStation 2 port of his PlayStation Portable launch title Twisted Metal: Head On.

This week, Jaffe has laid out on Sony's official PlayStation Blog what he hopes will provide a heavy-enough incentive to draw crowds to his studio's first budget title. As previously noted, Twisted Metal: Head On-Extra Twisted Edition will feature revamped textures and art, as well as run at 60fps and include a brand new level, plus four levels that were originally intended for 2001's Twisted Metal: Black.

Extra Twisted Edition will also include the Twisted Metal soundtrack, a concept art book, a mode featuring Twisted Metal's iconic clown Sweet Tooth, and a set of live-action movies Jaffe initially created in 1995 for the original Twisted Metal. According to Jaffe, Twisted Metal: Head On-Extra Twisted Edition will park it at retail in February for $19.95.

The first original project from Jaffe's new studio is currently slated to arrive later this year, though no details on the title have emerged.

Those of you hating on Jaffe need to can it! The PS2 is still a damn good system. It (and XBox and GC, for that matter) had some of the best games EVER MADE. One of the stinkers of our new console generation is the lack of backward compatibility for some of these classics. The lack of BC is probably why the Wii is kicking so much a** right now. I still own a GC because I can play its games on the Wii. Most of the popular games of last-gen were cross-platform (PoP, Madden, Tony Hawk, Need For Speed, etc...). I ditched my PS2. But, if Sony continues to crank out games for it (good ones), I may replace it and keep giving Sony my money. They'd have earned it. We're reaching a point where graphics are as good as they need to be. Proof: the success of the Wii. I believe that the PS3 and XBox360 are as far as we need to go in terms of flashy visuals. Now it's about great stories and engaging gameplay. After years in the industry, Jaffe probably notices this, as well. Don't dis him for having common sense.

I miss Twisted Metal. I know a lot of people say that car combat is a dead concept, but I really enjoy it. Plus, with the technology of the PS3, they could reinvent the series. Plus the online possibilities. I think that I'll just have to pick this up for my PS2, but I'd love to see a PS3 Twisted Metal as well.

In following previous posts, and what is sure to be ten billion more: all of that for $20?
I shall spit in the face of every $70 special edition from here on out. If Sony can afford to put a full game, a soundtrack, live action movies, and an art book in for the price of the additional bits of a full price special edition game, why are we paying so much more for limited/collectors/special/super fan-dabby-tabulous editions?

Hmm, most ported PSP games don't look so good when scaled up to PS2 standards. I'm kind of curious to see how it will turn out. Hopefully the gameplay will be solid. Its nice to see some new life in the Twisted Metal Series again. *Stops himself from going on a rant about 989 studio's*

    Posted Jan 16, 2008 1:06 am PT

"Wait, the soundtrack and the art book are included in the $20 retail price? That's insane and incredible."
Well, it's a code to download the soundtrack online, it's not a physical CD or anything.

Also, the levels are from the canceled Black Part II, not from Black.

The Twisted Metal series is a blast to play, and for 20 bucks, that is AWESOME! The art book and sound track alone is worth that much at least. What a great way to start building your studios rep. Hats off to David Jaffe.
