Thief 4 infiltrating Eidos Montreal?

Source: Eidos Montreal hinted that the title for its next "AAA" project after the recently announced Deus Ex 3 will begin with a "T" on its official Web site (check the blurb on the bottom-right of the screen). That led to widespread speculation that the studio would be bringing back another Eidos-owned PC franchise with a cult following, Thief.

What we heard: "T" is for "tease." As in, Eidos Montreal is a horrible tease for toying with true Thief fans' emotions like this.

When one thinks of Eidos franchises beginning with the letter "T," Tomb Raider is probably the first thing that comes to mind. But the next Tomb Raider game--Underworld--has already been unveiled, and is being developed by Crystal Dynamics. Underworld is also far enough out on the release schedule--fourth quarter of 2008--that it seems unlikely Eidos Montreal would already be gearing up for the follow-up.

That leaves Thief as the natural next choice, considering other Eidos-published "T" games like TimeSplitters and Thuderstrike: Operation Phoenix are either owned by other studios, or would be bizarre choices to bring back. Add into this that elsewhere on the Eidos Montreal site the studio says its first two games "will revive successful franchises" and the studio's next project seems certain.

[UPDATE]: This article originally referred to the rumored Eidos Montreal project as Thief 3. Thief: Deadly Shadows was originally titled Thief 3, so this would actually be the fourth proper installment in the Thief franchise. GameSpot regrets the error.

The official story: An Eidos representative said the company had no comment on the matter.

Bogus or not bogus?: Unless Eidos is full of sadists who enjoy dashing their customers' hopes, this one is not bogus.

What put me off Thief II was that while it was set in medieval times the architecture was 1930's which was off-putting. What put me off T3 was the very painted looking backgrounds which looked like theatre props and the option to rob decent taxpayers and even women in the streets. I hope T4 will at least look authentic like Thief 1. Having said all that Thief is my number one game followed by Deus Ex, Max Payne, Half Life 1 and Wolfie single-player (new one coming out). "Hey There Eidos! Stop Taffen about!"

As to modernising the game or considering multiplayer mode; don't even go there! I'm getting pretty cheesed off at the way Eidos are treating their customers on this one. Thief is my favourite game of all time even if it has got progressively worse instead of better and the first game was the best. I'ts about time we were told what is going on! How many more years must we wait in the cold and the dark?

i liked all the thief games so i trust they wont mess it up by making it modern. all i got to say for what i want in the game is rope arrows and they should have it like thief deadly shadows where u can walk around and buy equipment at the stores inbetween missions. only this time they city should be a lot bigger, more opean, and you should have to sneak every where all the time. mabey garret could have a disquise or something for when hes not on a mission and the guards only attack if they catch u stealing or something.

I couldn’t wait to buy Deadly Shadows (first week) even though it didn’t have rope arrows and would do the same for a new Thief game absolutely.

I believe it needs to be mostly like T1&2 with T3 elements & even a little Oblivion game play wouldn’t hurt. Of course a brand new gaming engine (like Assassin’s Creed) is a must.
I also agreed a modern version would stink on ice, give us that old time Garrett.

Idc if the engin is same like Thief 3 or better! I just wanna bigger City and more loot to steal On 6 months i replay Thief 3 and evrty time i make my new personal record of arsenal and non seld loot So i hope Eidos dont make some realy crazy engin and short playing game which ill finish for 4 days or 2 dasy like T3 or TR:L ( Only 22h whit more of the half artifacts )

Bring Randy Smith and the rest of the incredible Looking Glass team back and do it right this time!

Just imagine a level called 'Ruins of Soulforge', with our hero somehow returning to the ruins of the majestic cathedral, with plenty of ghosts of the mechanists and some of the Karras' Children and machinery still active...

Imagine an old level and some old foes with a brand new game engine...

What do you guys think of this?

i wonder if it may be multiplayer? like 2 thiefs work together to steal an item like splinter cell but not stealing data? and you could have a multiplayer character in which you could customise and as you level up, you can do many more things or get stronger with health or start off with like 5 health potions.

    EXAMPLE:

level 1 (Starter Level): 20 broadhead arrows
    level 2: 10 Gas Arrows
And so on until level 30 when you get climbing gloves!

And if you are wondering, how do you level up, then this will solve your problem.

when you finish a mission with a partner you get Experience depenting on how well you did and the loot you collected can be sold and then you can buy stuff with the money you got from the loot. so you can buy a certain amount of gas arrows, broadhead arrows Etc.

Well Its Just A Suggestion But Maybe Eidos Will Do This..... But we never know do we.....

Even if Thief IV is terrible then the least Eidos can do is give us a great engine with a funky SDK and leave us to get on with it.

wooooow, I cant wait . Im sure thief 4 will be announced, I just hope its a really non linear game, with many missions, and no monsters like thief 1, that was a terrible idea

so its official, the fans have decided this isnt fiction but fact, it'll suck so bad if they come out and announce and confirm something else, it could cause minor riots all around the world because this isnt as big as halo or gta, very minor riots but riots nonetheless, dont play with our emotions Eidos!

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows, was one of the worst games I ever played.
Thief 2: The Metal Age, was one of the best games I've ever played.

So I don't know, I really want another good thief game, but if they mess it up like Deadly Shadows I won't be suprised.

It'd be great if they did something like Assasin's Creed, with more emphasis on stealth of course, and dynamic day time, weather, and innovations like actually cleaning up the crime scene, instead of the simply getting in, kill, and get out.

Thief 4 would be awesome, but is it really just going to be Assassin's Creed in the dark?

Remember that the aim of Thief wasn't to assassinate people, but to steal items and uncover the plot

I do think that Assassin's Creed could have a good influence on the Thief franchise. The way you have to get the lay of the land, sniff out leads, and plan your jobs; I remember thinking "if you swapped out killing folk with stealing stuff, this would be a great Thief game".

One thing that the older Thief games struggled with was making the world feel populated. The fact that most of the story took place at night was a good cover, but I think that was largely due to technological constraints, so I'm excited to think what could be done with today's platforms.

The open-world gameplay would make sense if many of the buildings weren't just cool to climb on, but boasted interiors that could be looted for fencing cash.
