Alongside its business projections for the current financial year, Capcom yesterday released updates sales charts for its best-selling games and franchises. The publisher's 1992 Super Nintendo adaptation of Street Fighter II retained its title as the single best-selling Capcom single product of all time with 6.3 million copies sold, but recent releases have been carving out their own places on the charts.

Released earlier this year, Devil May Cry 4 has already reached seventh on the sales charts with 2.3 million sold worldwide. Of 2007's releases, only three broke the million mark: Monster Hunter Freedom 2 for the PlayStation Portable (2.15 million), Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition (1.25 million), and Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles (1.05 million).

As for the company's biggest franchises, Resident Evil has sold the most games with a total of 34.5 million. Following that are Mega Man and Street Fighter, with sales of 28 million and 25 million, respectively. Interestingly, while Resident Evil and Street Fighter both have multiple games in the company's top five best-selling list--Resident Evil with three games and Street Fighter with two--the highest placing Mega Man game is Mega Man 2, ranked 21 on the publisher's list with 1.51 million sold.

The Blue Bomber made up for his dearth of massive hits with sheer quantity. To date, Capcom has produced 120 Mega Man titles, more than twice the amount of any other franchise. Street Fighter is the next most prolific Capcom title with 59 releases, followed by Resident Evil's 50 games.

10 best-selling Capcom games of all time

1. Street Fighter II--Super Nintendo--6.3 million
2. Resident Evil 2--PlayStation--4.96 million
3. Street Fighter II Turbo--Super Nintendo--4.1 million
4. Resident Evil 3 Nemesis--PlayStation--3.5 million
5. Resident Evil--PlayStation--2.75 million
6. Dino Crisis--PlayStation--2.4 million
7. Devil May Cry 4--PlayStation 3, Xbox 360--2.3 million
8. Devil May Cry--PlayStation 2--2.16 million
9. Monster Hunter Freedom 2--PlayStation Portable--2.15 million
10. Onimusha: Warlords--PlayStation 2--2.02 million

I've played every game on this list, with the exception of Onimusha. Capcom is known for quality games and i'm a Capcom fanboy. There, i said it! i have SF2 for my original Game Boy and i sleep in Mega Man pj's. Kay, the last part isn't true but that would be so cool!

I'm guessing there was no love for RE4 because there was no Racoon City/Umbrella like the other games. I'd say this was the Super Mario 2 of Resident Evil.

Yet, Capcom didn't give a passing thought to releasing SF4 on Wii, even though SF2 is Capcom's best selling title ever...on a Nintendo system.

i bet re 4 cracks a lot more than 2 million if you put all versions together but that figure is just from the wii alone.

that's because people lost count of how many times they re-released SFII with extra content in each release, thus making everyone rush to get the new one and ditch their old one

What happened to Resident Evil 4? Odd.
Street Fighter II series was always the bomb.

im not suprised res 4 didnt sell as much as the earlier ones, altough its alright, it was too far removed from the classic res evil of 1 and 2, with 2 being the peak. this being unfortunate for me, coz i was a massive res evil fan.

I couldve sworn that RE4 has sold over 2.5 mil units so far. Its over 1.2 mil on Wii alone. Add that with the PS2 and GC versions, it HAD to sell more than the original RE4. I notice that they are broken down to consoles though, so they may have not combined overall sales across all available platforms.

  • wooooode

    Posted May 27, 2008 7:13 am PT

Well RE4 did crack over 2 million but it sold like 1.5 on GC and around 750k on PS2 and over a million on the Wii but the sales are for only one console.

SFII was the one of the reasons I bought an SNES, and it was near-perfect arcade port. Its success in the arcades are what led it to its home console success. But SF IV should sell a crap load of copies as well.

Definitely shocked to see Dino Crisis up there. Even more shocked that none of the Mega Man games cracked the top 10. Not even the anniversary collection on three different platforms.

I never understood what was so aweome about SF2. (No offense to fans.) But, I am appaled RE4 isn't up there. It was like one of the best, if not the best, games made by Capcom. Same thing for Okami but oh well....

    This proves 2 things:
    (1) An awesome game is an awesome game, regardless of age or console.
    (2) While gaming has definately gone mainstream, it still has a LONG way to go as far as 'penetration rate'. The SFII series was released BEFORE gaming blew up, and yet it's outsold almost ALL the contemporary games on the market - inluding Halo3 and GTAIV. Gaming is generating lots of money for the console makers, retailers and publishers. But the developers are scraping by. While I'm celebrating Capcom's success (I'm 1 of their fans), I'm worried about the tons of money being made by everyone EXCEPT the creative minds behind the games. This news is bittersweet.

dubel_07, both Halo 2 and Halo 3 have sold more units individually that Street Fighter. Roughly two million more.

Only 6.3 mill? Not that it's a small number, it's just that I had expected that the best selling game from a company lik eCoapcom would have sold more.

SF2 was so much fun for SNES. A bunch of my friends and I had it and I remember lots of sleepless nights trying to beat the game with every character to see all the endings. Getting to see Zangief dance with Gorbachev is harder than you think! Good to see that game ranks so high.

Look at all the hard work the Playstation Brand has done for this Company. Its said that they will now no longer keep things exclusive to the Plasystation brand anymore...I mean damn 8 of their top 10 best selling games ever were for a Sony Product. Oh well I guess everyone is a sucker for Money. I loved the good old days were you needed to have both systems in order to experience the best games...I mean you need that playstation two for MGS GTs and GTA's. And the Xbos for Fable Halo and Halo 2. So you had to have both in order to have a great time. Now its like you only need one system becuase every game is coming out on both. Slightly different graphics but essentially the same. I miss the good old days where you need a playstation for the hott exclusives and an Xbox for all the shooters

Since they included combined sales of DMC 4, why not combined sales of RE4 (GC, PS2, and Wii)? RE4 would have been higher on the list than Dino Crisis.

I'm surprised there are ONLY 59 Street Fighter games and 120 Megaman games. I thought there were at least that many editions of Street Fighter II, and don't they release about 200 Megaman games every year or something like that?

I actually by far prefered playing SF2 on the genesis, the control scheme was by far superior, and gameplay is all that matters. I am still miffed they dont make control pads with 6 buttons on the face anymore.

Now seems a good time for Capcom to do another Dino Crisis title. I'm surprised the original PSOne release was on this chart. The last Xbox one had pretty crappy camera angles/controls so if they can fix that I think they could have another hit on their hands.
