In the 2001 film Rock Star, the lead singer of a small-town tribute band wins a contest to join his favorite band. The movie's plot was inspired by the real-life story of cover-band crooner Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was chosen by Judas Priest in 1996 to replace singer Rob Halford. If director Brett Ratner had his way, he'd use a similar template for a film...based on the Guitar Hero franchise.
Ratner, who was recently tapped to direct the big-screen version of God of War, told MTV this week about his burning yearning to make a film inspired by Activision's billion-dollar franchise. "I would love to do a Guitar Hero movie, if Activision would ever let me," chimed the Rush Hour and X-Men 3 helmer. "I'm trying to convince them...It could be about a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and he wins the Guitar Hero competition. One of these dreams-[come-true] kind of concepts."
The filmmaker also told MTV his branding company, Brett Ratner Brands, helped Activision choose the name for Guitar Hero World Tour. "For instance, naming Guitar Hero: World Tour, coming up with the new Guitar Hero game name. It's sort of like [MTV's] Rock Band. So they said: 'Come up with a name.' And I did, and it became Guitar Hero: World Tour." Ratner has also included Guitar Hero in several music videos he directed, including Miley Cyrus' "7 Things."
