Ratner itching to make Guitar Hero movie

In the 2001 film Rock Star, the lead singer of a small-town tribute band wins a contest to join his favorite band. The movie's plot was inspired by the real-life story of cover-band crooner Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was chosen by Judas Priest in 1996 to replace singer Rob Halford. If director Brett Ratner had his way, he'd use a similar template for a film...based on the Guitar Hero franchise.

Ratner, who was recently tapped to direct the big-screen version of God of War, told MTV this week about his burning yearning to make a film inspired by Activision's billion-dollar franchise. "I would love to do a Guitar Hero movie, if Activision would ever let me," chimed the Rush Hour and X-Men 3 helmer. "I'm trying to convince them...It could be about a kid from a small town who dreams of being a rock star and he wins the Guitar Hero competition. One of these dreams-[come-true] kind of concepts."

The filmmaker also told MTV his branding company, Brett Ratner Brands, helped Activision choose the name for Guitar Hero World Tour. "For instance, naming Guitar Hero: World Tour, coming up with the new Guitar Hero game name. It's sort of like [MTV's] Rock Band. So they said: 'Come up with a name.' And I did, and it became Guitar Hero: World Tour." Ratner has also included Guitar Hero in several music videos he directed, including Miley Cyrus' "7 Things."

I agree with DarknessVegeta and beetlejoose. Personally i'm starting to think that the movie industry is starting to die from a couple of years to these days, just look at the movies that are coming comic-based-movie, game-based-movie or from a book and not to mention those remake or sequel from movies that movie you haven't hear to talk since twenty-who-knows years, this movie perhaps is gonna be like "Grind" with some differences.

As Hollywood is producing garbage like this *sarcasm alert*, i'll send them an script the movie is gonna be called "Console Wars: The attack of the Fanboys" is about a boy who dreams to show the gaming world that his console is the best no matter how awful games and features it has, he'll show to every one that his console is the best and has more exclusives but at the end he'll understand that the important thing is the fun that he get when he plays and realise that consoles has weak sides and strong sides and the fact that he can choose which fits better to him. and that would be a major blockbuste and believe or not many fanboys would go to see which is the best hahahaha GH movie is gonna be as crap as mine hahaha.

This would be like making a Mario Party movie. How do you make a movie based on a game with, quite literally, no plot?

I think it could be good, as long as it isn't taken seriously, though then you are in danger of just recreating the South Park episode. I've started writing a play about a boy who after some bad history with his father has been mentally scarred and will only play Guitar Hero or sleep. I guess it's going to be down to the context and reason for Guitar Hero in the film.

All this Movie-from-Game talk and no one's mentioned the upcoming Max Payne flick? Well I have to say, I'm stoked that Max Payne will be sneering at me from the big screen next week.

The movie is going to suck, it's pretty safe to say, but I'm going to see it anyway; I've been a big fan of Remedy's shoot-em-up film noir since it's release all those aeons ago and so I'd not forgive myself if I missed it "just" because the plot is less-than-inspired and pretty much every movie-from-a-game has been rubbish (except, of course, Super Mario Bros. - what a movie! :-p )

I'm sure, if Ratner were to make this movie, many a fan-boy will go see it, just because it features their favourite game and inspires the hope that one day they might, just might, make it into a real band by playing GH.

so he wants to make a movie based on a game with no plot... and basically take the plot from another movie? ... hopefully someone out there will step up and point out to him that nobody will want to watch it...

NO NO NO. People need to learn that games turned to movies don't work! Even movies based on plot-driven games don't work, Guitar Hero is absolutely not a good basis for a movie

I feel like God of War can probably be made into a damn good movie if someone other than Ratner makes it...and I haven't even played the game myself, ever. And of course I agree with everyone else: what the hell are they gunna do with a Guitar Hero movie?? That's exactly what I thought when I first saw the headline.

Not really seeing how this will work..... it better be a darn good idea they got brewing back there somewhere, b/c honestly I don't see much they can do with a group game. "Some kids got together and decided they can play, blah blah blah...form a band, rent a car, yadda yadda, they win a contest" Crap.

If that lame concept is his idea of a GH movie what the hell is his concept for the GoW movie, a LARPer gets whisked to ancient Greece to fight the gods.

General idea of why not to do it.

Ratner did an awesome job with Rush Hour 1-2 and also did a good job with the Red Dragon remake. Since then his movies have gotten stale, X-MEN 3... come on I'm a huge fan of X-men but that was just crappy. Rush Hour 3... more like Rush-A-Movie 3, the hilarious funny just wasn't there.
    MESSAGE TO RATNER:
    Guitar Hero Movie= BAD IDEA!!!

Mr. Ratner, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
