What we heard: Rumors of an Xbox 360 version of Metal Gear Solid 4 have been bouncing around for years. (Remember this one?) More recently, the last few months have seen whispers of the first Metal Gear Solid, released for the original PlayStation in 1998 and PC in 2000, making its way onto Xbox Live.

Now, both rumors have been restoked with a vengeance by a teaser page on the Konami site. Posted just as the Friday workday ended--a common publicity tactic by publishers to "build buzz" over a weekend--the teaser page bears a single line of text saying, "A next Metal Gear is…" Above the garbled English is an equation of sorts that has an upside-down exclamation point being added to a right-side-up exclamation point.

The sum of the two symbols appears to be a power button that looks extremely like the Xbox 360's on/off switch, and the entire equation is the same neon green as the Xbox 360 logo. The resulting spectulation has many a fanboy apoplectic, since Final Fantasy XIII and Tekken 6's multiplatform moves make MGS4 one of the few remaining third-party PS3 exclusives. However, a close look at the PS3 will show it has the same symbol on its power button, just above a green (and blue) light when the console is turned on. Given that it is, in fact, the universal logo for power switch on electronics, the Wii has one as well.

The official story: As of press time, US Konami reps had not responded to requests for comment.

Bogus or not bogus?: Not bogus that some sort of new Metal Gear project is being teased. However, the fact that one of the exclamation points is upside down may point to a third, non-Xbox 360 possibility...that the game in question is a third Metal Gear Acid. The PSP spin-off series uses an exclamation point as a substitute "i" in its title, just like the one in the equation.

I remember reading that Kojima and people at Konami had to remove parts of the original game because it was simply to big to fit on a Blu-Ray disc, how do they plan to convert it to the 360 platform which uses DVD? Sell the game on a 60 GB hard drive? Conversion to 360 is not likely, if you don't have a PS3 you should probably root for a possible PC version instead...

guys I played MGS4 for 10 times on PS3 and I shifted to MGS3 snake eater because I grew tired of the octocamo system... It just wipes every aspect of thrill the game has, and If Mr. kojima embarks on a new Metal Gear, he should think of including that in it... and the weapons are sooo sool in MGS4, but their availability should not come later in gameplay, because after level 3 the Barret I was able to acquire and the game almost is finished, really boring...

The Ipod is a great addition....

Thanks to all Konami and Mr. Hideo Kojima for such a masterpiece.....
Really, and the commercials pull it off....

joemerchant2006 you are totally right. and besides the first Metal Gear Solid came out on the Sony MSX computer, so the Metal Gear franchise is property of Mr.H Kojima, Konami, and Sony.(oh and redsoxfan22 i think everyone knows youre a lamearse little 360 fanboy who regrets buying the "ultimate gaming machine" because you couldnt wait.)

Lol, I just saw that this article is about Metal Gear Solid Touch, which will come out in spring 2009.....on the Iphone.

Xbox 360 owners will have to wait a little longer I guess......

Ehm, dude, the guy who wrote this article didnt do his homework.

MGS 2 and 3 were both ported to Xbox. (Substance and Subsistance). Its only a matter of time until it comes to 360.

And all the 360 fanboys who "hated" the game first, will suddenly love it, because it comes to their console.

I personally dont care if they ported MGS4 to Xbox 360. that way everyone can see that this is the most epic game series in history.

As long as MGS 5 will come out first on PS3, which it probably will, I'm happy. (cuz I sold my xbox 360 over a year ago lol)

I hope ps3 comes up with more exclusives to beat the Xbox 360 and Wii. Also, don't even think about Metal Gear coming out for xbox. Don't even dare think about it. (Even though I do sometimes.) All games should stick with Sony. The playstation series have always been winners. Ps1 dominated its generation, Ps2 dominated its generation, and I hope that the Ps3 will dominate its generation as well. Ps3 is taking time to develop and since Microsoft claimed that this console war will last longer than any other one, Ps3 still has time to unlock its full potential. I just hope it happens soon.

This would be an insult to Kojima if you put MGS4 on the 360. First of all, the 360 is not worthy, two it cant handle the game at all, three because microsoft is trying to be desperate. You stole Ace Combat, you will not take Metal Gear. At all. It's illegal.

On official metal gear solid 4 website, there is the "next"link on the top right of the home page, dont click on it.Just below that there is the "e"for all link.compare the two symbols.both green and rotate konamis to the right. When u go into the "e" link it gives info on previous metal gear games and premiers of the games at that show.I think because the two are right next to each other and soo alike.I may be wrong but it seems seeing as they are on the same"official"site that it stands to reason.I dont think its for x-box or another port as sonys is always exclusive for the "next" new story.

If you notice on the official mgs4 site below the green ! + ! = there is the "e for all"link.the e which is a power symbol is glowing green. If you turn konamis on its side its almost a match.I think they will announce a new PS3 game at the next exhibition.Take a look at the konami site!!!!long live PS3!!!!!

klub77, graphically what would have to be lowered? Its only 720p, great textures yes, stunningly shaded yes, but detail isn't great though compared to other high profile games, so no, i dont think anything would be lost.
Though even with multiple DVD's the 360 would still have to have to use downsampled audio as it doesn't support lossless multi-channel audio, not that it matters as Im still the only PS3 owning person i know online or offline who has the system to appreciate lossless audio, and MGS4's isnt good enough to justify the space, it great for a game, but fidelity is variable, so i doubt if lossless audio was used in recording/mixing/mastering, so 2-3 DVD's with compressed audio would be fine and sound identical to 99% of people, and being as installs can now be done, it could be possible to install the full thing on the HDD, increasing loading time, and with no disc swapping or installs mid game, meaning it would be superior to the PS3 version.
Not that i think it will happen, i dont think it will, but dont think its a loss to the 360 owners, its a tad overhyper and dull at times, and is more Kojima's attempt at a CGI movie than a proper game. As some people can probably tell, im a disalussioned PS3 owner, who had to give in and buy a 360 after realising the power of The Cell and BluRay was as much marketing crap as the Emotion Engine.

  • FxAlaweed

    Posted Dec 11, 2008 9:14 am PT

Klub77 you need to stop being a blind fanboy b/c it's hindering your ability to use logic and reason i.e. the sole basis of your opinion is that the game wouldn't fit on a dvd. The fact that Blue Dragon was on 3 DVD's or Lost Odyssey was on 4 DVD's shows that disc capacity is not a reason not to publish a game. When I played MGS 4 on PS3 I would've much rather just changed the disc twice instead of installing each chapter on my HDD before I played it. It'll be interesting to see what Konami is working on either way i'm sure people will eat it up.

i wouldnt mind if i got a watered down version of the game. the game would tstill look and sound great. And im sure the gameplay would be able to remain intact and thats all that matters to me... a great game should play well more than anything imo.

  • klub77

    Posted Dec 10, 2008 2:39 pm PT

Face it: MGS is not coming to Xbox because it wouldn't fit on a DVD unless Kojima reduces audio channels/quality or reduces resolution, and he wouldn't do that. He's one of the few people that's made a game PS3 exclusive so its features weren't compromised by Xbox just to sell more. Maybe Xbox owners will get lucky and get an MGS that's not as good as MGS4.

Xbox fanboys, its not coming to Xbox, and even if it did it would suck. You know why? Because its not PS3. And that's many reasons in itself. I love how Xbox fanboys say they hate it...until it comes to Xbox. Oh well, it'll be even funnier when it doesn't.

  • mgsfreakman92

not counting 4 or any of the psp titles, every metal gear/solid game except 3 has been ported to something else. mgs-computer,gamecube
    mgs2/substance-xbox, (computer?)
Metal gear-NES (JP only), PS2 (mgs 3 subsistance)
Metal gear 2 solid snake- NES (again, JP only), PS2 (mgs 3 subsistance)
now you could say that because of the MGS3 PS2-exclusiveisity, MGS4 will remain on PS3

BUT..... Lets look at it from a marketing standpoint. SOny knew that there system (PS3's) weren't selling for s***. that is an undeniable fact. SO sony needed something to give a little boost to sales, a marketing steroid if you will. And what would make a better steroid than what was possibly the most anticipated game of the metal gear series to date (and in my critical opinion, the most anticipated game of this entire generation)? So sony (probably) used a timed exclusive with Konami. for those of you who do not know what that means, it is when a game remains exclusive to one system for a pre determined amount of time before it can be ported (legally) to other systems. And undeniable evidence shows that it worked. and it worked damn well. At the release of MGS4, sony saw the hugest spike in PS3 sales in a looooong time (at least i think they did). I mean hell.. i know like 10 people who bought Ps3's just for that game. Hell.. I almost considered doing it... so anyways, the timed exclusive will probably be over after the holiday season, which explains the timing of this tease, because Konami is probably already working on it. After the holidays, PS3 sales will most likely flat line, as sales for lots of things do after the holidays. So Knoami will be able to make the game for 360, which even still has a much larger market than PS3, and make tons more money. Even if everything a just said proves to be completely wrong and bogus and everything happens in the complete opposite of what was predicted, Konami themselves are acknowledging a new metal gear, so we can all be happy and buy PS3 If this isn't a MGS4 port for the 360, i know i will (in the next 6 months) Oh and i would also like to add that hte theory that Kojima wants to remain loyal to sony systems is pure Bullshi*

"Kojima began his presentation with a trailer of Metal Gear Solid BD for the PlayStation Portable, a game based on Ashley Wood's comic book series by IDW Publishing. The end of the trailer showed a glimpse of Metal Gear Ray, and while it's already been reported in the latest issue of Famitsu, Kojima reconfirmed that a sequel based on Metal Gear Solid 2's storyline will be released in the future. "

"We've finally started to figure out the PS3, and we've decided on [MGS4's] game systems," said Kojima. "Back with last year's TGS trailer, we were still trying to learn the PS3's potentials. Now that we've figured out what we want to do, all we have to do now is to create it." there you go, this should help at least a little, now you guys can point at things while you grunt and thump your chests. lol

"So now you're saying the MGS story is unimportant so there's no need to think about it, its better to think about the environment and world etc etc... is that what you're saying? If so, what business do you have here posting on an article related to a game of such unimportance and responding to people that talk about it?"

Once again this falls under the umbrella of subjectivity. Is MGS 4 the most important thing in your life, to the point of excluding real life issues? For some people it is, but for most people it is not. I am not saying you're wrong to love it, all I am saying is that you should acknowledge that to other people MGS 4 is just a game, an average game at that. And I have not posted a rampantly fanboyish post as you did yesterday ranting about the Xbox 360 and its fanboys (the post is now hidden due to the overwhelmingly negative feedback). You love the PS3. You love MGS 4. Plenty of people love the Xbox 360 who also love the MGS series and therefore want MGS 4 to be ported. Big deal. Get over it. Let them hope. How does this effect you? Why do you need to resort to name calling? It is because of posts like these that I've written to you. Not because I care whether or not MGS 4 gets ported. I already have the PS3 version and am not that impressed. I'd much rather play Valkyria Chronicles, which is what I am off to do now in fact .

People are getting wayy too serious here over a little issue...

If it stays on playstation, it stays on playstation.
If the game goes to Xbox, it goes to Xbox.
If it goes to any other console, it goes to that console.

You will get over it. Just like you have done with Tekken games and GTA games when they went multiplatform.

Whatever happens, happens. Don't cry over it.

Please quit this rampant ego-boosting debating/arguing, it's pathetic.
