I wanted to let everyone know that GameSpot's weekly sports gaming podcast, From the Bleachers, is on indefinite hiatus. Thanks to everyone who listened to the show this year and I'll keep you updated with more information when and if this situation changes.
That said, GameSpot's coverage of sports games continues apace. We'll still be covering all the games here on the site and on this very blog, and you can always check our busy sports gaming discussion forum to find out what your fellow fans are talking about.

Now, on Friday I mentioned that I'd wait until Monday to announce GameSpot's choice for 2008 Sports Game of the Year: NHL 09. With this year's selection, EA Sports' NHL series becomes the third sports series in GameSpot's history to be named best sports game in back-to-back years (the other two are EA Sports' FIFA series and 2K Sports' NFL Football series). While its obviously too early to start handing out trophies for next year's games it's clear that, just like in real sports, momentum means a lot in game development and, right now, the NHL development team has a ton of momentum. Here's hoping that nothing--not even big head hockey--can take that away from them.
If you want to know more of our thoughts on NHL 09, go back and check out the last episode of The Lineup, where you can see our tribute to the game and also check out the incredible trophy awarded to the game by the show.
Now a trophy like that doesn't grow on trees, obviously, because that would be a seriously messed-up tree. Having seen the trophy on the show, I'm certain you spent the weekend asking yourself, "Where can I find a large picture of The Lineup's 2008 Sports Game of the Year trophy, along with a detailed breakdown of its many fine parts?"
The answer? Right here:

I hope to post at least once more to this blog before I head out for holiday break but, if I don't get around to it, I'd like to wish you all a happy holiday season. Here's to 2009!
