I've been a fan of flying simulation and arcade games for some time. When it comes to flight games I'm usually playing Nintendo Top Gun or any game in the Ace Combat series. When I heard that the Tom Clancy series was going into flight I was intrigued, because some of my favorite games comes from that franchise. Today, Ubisoft released the anticipated Tom Clancy HAWX demo, which offers one tutorial mission, one regular mission and customizable features.
Playing through the tutorial you get a sense of the new gameplay mechanics HAWX's is bringing to the world of flight games. There's this action camera that zooms out to a third person view allowing you to see all of your enemies that surround you. You can toggle this feature on and off, and mixing this combination will give you the upper hand against your enemies. The camera works well when you are up against multiple bogies as they tend to fire multiple missiles at you.
Once you've learned the basics you are put in real battle. The mission is set in Rio de Janeiro on the brink of invasion from enemies of the sea, ground and air. You, your team, and another squadron are assigned the task to eradicate the enemy from the city.
During battle I never ran out of missiles to fire, and I rarely used my turrets, because they became ineffective to fast moving enemy. The mission is long and fun, and I've already played the demo a couple times. I'll be playing more of it tonight.
