Late yesterday Sony announced what was in store for the PS3 in the upcoming version 2.70 firmware update. The new additions mainly deal with a new Text Chat feature. The new feature lets you join up to three different chat rooms at the same time. You'll be able to type to your friends using the on-screen keyboard, the Wireless Keypad, or via a compatible keyboard. Each chat room will support up to sixteen people, and you can stay in them while you play games.

Sony revamped the friends list on the XrossMediaBar to complement the new Text Chat feature. You'll now be able to sort friends by online status and send them files up to 3MB in size.

You'll also be able to backup videos purchased from the PlayStation Store to an external hard drive. In a bid to keep things simple for users, Sony will now allow users to transfer PSP video purchases to the PS3 for playback.

Sony didn't announce a firm date for the update, but we don't imagine it will be too far off.

ed - The update is available now.

From what I am gathering from this blog from reading everyone's comments it seems that these people must be the same ones that was laughing at microsoft for not making every game backward compatible. But then all of a sudden boom...Sony gets sued and they are in the same boat having to support BC the best they can. Now that to me is really funny. If there were more people that would just enjoy gaming for gaming sake then all this stupid non-sense would not be going on.

    Just Game on people!!

Ok. Now how about voice chat while in games? Although I think the text chat feature a nice attempt by Sony to improve the PSN experience, I don't ever see me using it. Trying to text while playing a game just isn't a feature I find useful, even in a single player game.

I don't care what Sony's plans are concerning their firmware. All i want is PS2 emulation. Agree fully with Zombey1333 and fiskefyren.

I wish crap like this was optional. quit forcing me to wait for an hour while something I don't even want installs onto my tiny hardrive. also, to some of the posters below- who wouldnt want to be able to play their ps2 games? some people spent a fortune building a ps2 collection, and just because the PS3 came out doesn't mean PS2 games suddenly become not fun any more.

why would i EVER want to text chat with someone like this? i mean... when i'm on my ps3 either i'm playing a game or watching a blu-ray movie... *sigh*

    @ zombey1333:
i totally support all that you just said!!!

    @ blazey09:
and uhm... i totally dont support all that re****ed stuff you just said!!!
i mean... what??? look here bunny cakes... can i call you bunny cakes? whatever! why would someone keep their ps2 around if they had a ps3? why are we forced into keeping our old ps2 to play the games that are still being relished for the ps2 ONLY!!! ... *cough* that was just one point of view.
so if that re****ed stuff you just said is suppose to make sence... then no one should make games for the ps2 anymore... but... wait for it... THEY STILL DO you dum****! sorry... i ment bunny cakes! but hey... it would probably be dumb for sony to do it because... then people wouldn't buy so many ps2's anymore. so now they can also use the ps2 as an appitiser... people go buy it they are like wow and go buy a ps3... more money for sony! which is good for sony! but what you said was aimed towards the gamer and not sony, so it was pretty dumb, take care bunny cakes!!!

if you want ps2 emulation then you are just plain dumb.....whats the point of haveing a next gen consol if you are going to play last gen games.

When can we have the PS2 emulation? That's all I'd like. Really. Please? Is it that hard? Do you suck that hard that you can't successfully mimic your own technology?

Oops, forgot. They're waiting until they can't sell anymore PS2s for that. My bad.

I'm going to get thumbed down for this but if all you 360 say Sony copy MS, what about this. Didn't Sony came out with a console first? Didn't MS just copy it? LOL Just enjoy your games people. Console wars are just weak man. Chill out.

    @ andraki

i agree that some of these updates are useless and that gaming consoles should solely focus on games. but I have to disagree with the final comment. Gaming is about the game in its entirety. If a game can be amazing without killer graphics, then leave it at that. I still do play on my ps2 more than any other console, and I collect all the way back to atari 2600. Many of the older games are more astounding in their depth and challenge than newer games are. Recent examples include Ikaruga, no more heros, or persona 3: games that aren't visually stunning, but incredible in terms of what they offer. Others older titles such as earthbound, ogre battle, zelda: orcarina of time, the entire metal gear solid series, jet grind radio, rez, crazy taxi, or grandia 2 still hold up to todays standards and are amazingly fun to play.

If all you want is eye-candy, walk out the door and enjoy reality. Thats as good as visuals get. If you want to game, stop comparing which is has the best graphics and enjoy the entire experience each game offers.

    @andraki

I agree. the ps3 is super quiet, feels solid and looks cool, but i find it usually collecting dust compared to the 360. what sony should have done with their update is making online interaction with friends and buddy lists more seamless like the 360. multiplayer on the ps3 often feels like such a chore in comparison especially with voice chats and the lack of party invites. also.. RE5 looks noticeably better on the 360. killzone 2 is probably the most gorgeous game in terms of looks on the ps3 and it truly is an amazing game, but it still has what my friends and i have dubbed "ps3ness" to it.. whereas it still just feels a little bit soft.. not quite as sharp and clear as say gears of war.. tho thats not to discount how bad a$$ killzone is regardless.

Hey Andraki... where have you been? Did you not notice Killzone 2, Heavenly Sword, Gran Turismo Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, Warhawk... and others? And those are just exclusives that I have. Not to mention all the games that are just as great on each console such as Resident Evil 5 and others. I have had both since launch too and I gotta tell you that both systems have great games now. Killzone 2 just recently wiped the floor in my opinion with any game that has come out in recent memory.

The sooner they stop all this crap, and make a games console that is known for playing things like...... GAMES! the better. I have had a PS3 & 360 since their respected launches, and apart from the superior build quality of the PS3, the 360's games are almost always technicly better ( I include multi format ). You can say graphics aint everything, but if that were true I would still be playing with me PS2!
What I'm saying is~ Cut the crap and sort out your bloody GAMES console!

You can already listen to music on the HDD while in game, you've been able to do so for a while. All you do is hit the PS button in-game to bring up the menu. Then you go to your music, pick a playlist, play it and turn the volume on it up. Next go back to your game and turn the game volume down. It works and you don't need to wait for an update.

if you could actually watch the video you would notice you can voice or text chat lol, not everyone has a mic you know. seriously I think it is a great update being able to voice chat with up to sixteen people who aren't in the same game as you or are all playing different games.

the PS3 can't seem to dig itself out of the graveyard of third place in the sales charts, hell your last generation console there is still outselling you

can you say price drop, seriously if there's a god he'd make it happen

This is very useful in Playstation Home, you have to admit.

But apart from that, useless. The XMB ingame is just not fast enough (even though im talking milliseconds) for this world. Poor, just to sell those crappy keypads, when I just plug in my keyboard anyways :S.

Sony you are losing the console battle because of stupid decisions like "text chat" WTF? in fact the PS3 is so awful at chatting to people i use my 360 chat to talk to my friends while we are playing PS3 games. I just want to talk to friends WHILE playing, in our own room, why is that so hard to do.

  • kiriyama2

    Posted Apr 5, 2009 8:17 am PT

I think they should have done it the way microsoft did it with their MSN chat, a small pop-up window in the game, it was horrible of course for FPS or racing games, but slower games like RTS and RPG's it works well.

As for the video thing, I dont think of it one way or the other, its simply something i wont use.

lol like anyone has the patience to jump in and out of the game just to say something every 10 seconds.. Sigh, another useless feature. (text chat)

  • AncientDozer

    Posted Apr 5, 2009 12:35 am PT

I really and truly agree, bl4hster. It's nice but more or less inconsequential and useless. I'm not sure if it's a situation of two steps forward and one step back or just simply stepping to the side, back and forth.

It's like using phones to text chat except the inherent advantages are not there.

I'm really not good at explaining this; Penny Arcade's news post and comic on the subject does a better job I assure you. But the practicality of texting in an real time sort of game is nonexistent. Especially for games like FPS or sports and racing.

  • bl4hster

    Posted Apr 4, 2009 5:49 pm PT

Honestly, i think they just did this to sell more keypads. Well, atleast it was a high priority feature because they want to sell more keypads. I could think of 101 things that gamers want but they always seem to choose oddball features like "playstation home" and text chat. useless in my opinion

  • Savior24

To maverick 76: Yes Xbox Live does that feature. Been able to do this for awhile now using just private chat alone, but with the NXE update in November, now up to a total of eight people can talk across any game seamlessly.

The update came out yesterday (4-3-09), and one feature they neglected to include in this article is that you can now text chat while in gameplay. One upgrade I would love to see is being able to play your own music overtop of ANY game.
