As part of its August firmware update to Xbox Live, Microsoft hung an open sign on the Avatar Marketplace. The microtransaction-fueled hub lets gamers trick out their Xbox Live avatars with new clothing and items, ranging from real-world apparel from the likes of Adidas, Quiksilver, and Tokidoki to game-related fare from Gears of War 2, BioShock, and several Halo games.
With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's November 10 launch already a success if preorder figures are any indication, it comes as no surprise that Activision and Infinity Ward plan to offer Xbox 360 gamers themed avatar gear. In a post to his Twitter feed, Infinity Ward community manager Robert "fourzerotwo" Bowling confirmed that Modern Warfare 2-themed Xbox Live avatar items are on the way, some of which will "hopefully" be free.
Unfortunately, Bowling was less definitive on Avatar rewards, saying only that he was "not sure" whether they would be available. As their name suggests, rewards function in a way similar to Xbox Live achievement points, as they unlock avatar-related gear upon completing certain objectives within a game.
