What we heard: That Insomniac Games would be working on a new PlayStation 3 title isn't a particularly big shocker. After all, the Burbank, California-based independent developer has made its bones exclusively through Sony's PlayStation platforms from its inception, establishing such franchises as Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet & Clank, and, most recently, Resistance.

In tandem with being named the fifth best place to work in California, Insomniac revealed in March that it had another PS3 exclusive in the works. And judging by a billboard emblazoned with "Resistance 3" spotted on a Shreveport, Louisiana, film set over the weekend by a NeoGAF forum-goer, it appears that said title will be a new installment in Insomniac's alternate-history first-person shooter series.

The billboard in question will purportedly appear in Battle: Los Angeles, which, belying its name, is set to begin filming this fall in the Shreveport-Baton Rouge area. While a release date for the film has yet to be confirmed, industry sources such as IMDB.com list the movie with an early 2011 premiere. Should this date hold true, the marketing campaign indicates that Resistance 3 will see release sometime during the first part of 2011.

Notably, the billboard also gives a small clue on the plot of the title. In the past, Insomniac has used the "A" in Resistance's titles to display a landmark from some pivotal location in the game. The original Resistance: Fall of Man featured London's Big Ben, while Resistance 2 showed San Francisco's Bay Bridge and Resistance: Retribution for the PSP displayed Paris' Eiffel Tower. As for Resistance 3, the A in the billboard clearly depicts the Statue of Liberty, indicating New York City will be a prominent locale.

The official story: "To date, we have made no official announcements regarding the Resistance franchise."--A Sony representative.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looking not bogus. Insomniac's Resistance franchise has been a commercial and critical success for Sony, so it seems to be a foregone conclusion that the studio would return for a third console installment. However, considering that Resistance 2 shipped at the end of 2008, a 2011 release window seems a bit longer than a normal development cycle would call for.

I'm not going to lie. I had more fun with Resistance 2 then Gears of War 2
To be honest, I want Resistance 3 to come even earlier! lol
Oh wait what about SOCOM 4 and Killzone 3?

Both PhysicsLCP and I replied. PhysicsLCP said.

"You've just backed up my previous post by making accusations about me that aren't true. There is no reasoning with you because you clearly have many "angry retort" bullets in your immaturity gun with an itchy trigger finger. Does the fact that I play Gears regularly destroy my faithfulness to my own company who develops PS3 games exclusively, let alone a game that directly competes with our Resistance franchise? I'm having a hard time thinking on your level. Sorry."

    And I said.

"Yea, thanks for the complementary reply vasot. And how do you know everyone here comes to the Xbox articles and makes derisive and spiteful comments like your doing here? I certainly don't.

Hmmm... all my comments seem to have gotten one thumbs down. I suspect vasot. (No duh.) Other than that I'm supported."

You just can't leave good PS3 games alone, can you?

"Childish cr*p for the immature PS3 lovers like dsbvusdbo.
I am an adult and not a 12 year old anymore so i am moving on to Modern Warfare 2 and hoping soon for Alan Wake, Mass Effect 2, Halo OSDT and Splinter Cell Convictions to name a few.

Forget SONY. Ps3 games are mostly MEH anyway"

    @PhysicsLCP asked you this.

"@Vastot. If you are truly mature, then why are you writing a comment for a game you have no intention of playing because it is deemed immature? You actually have to navigate to this article. What compelled you to act, well, contrary to your proclamation that you are too mature for us?"

And again you bit back with this.

"@PsychoLCP you PS3 boys do this all the time to the Xbox articles around here so please spare me from your hypocrisy..."

"Azuki how old are you ?? 10 ??
Just grow up man life is not full of color and humor and rainbows and childish sh*t...
Personally i do not like games with walking teddy bears, talking cartoon animals and baby robots i want my games to be as realistic as possible.
    --------------------
This game is gonna take from 6 to 8. Will never go near the 8.5." I commented on your comment. "Yea vasot's depressing prattle about life is a miserable gore fest is rather meaningless. I've definitely not had such a bad experience as he has apparently had. Life does have some moments of spontaneus humor if your not to morbid to notice them. The game of course isn't a perfect replica of life by any means but you're just supposed to relax and enjoy it. I hope he has some better experiences and enjoys game like these and real life." You bit back with.

Why hello @Vasot. What a pleasent suprise. Remember me? Are navigating to an article about a game you don't like or have just so you can critisize it again? I remember you said about Ratchet & Clank. (Another PS3 exclusive.) "Not impressed. The game looks childish with cartoony graphics. I am not a 10 year old" and when someone said. "These games are designed for both children and adults, they're not childish. If you cant enjoy a little color and humor in your gaming I feel sorry for you, you have no idea what your missing out on. I for one am glad we have developers like Insomniac who still take the time to make AAA high budget games that aren't all dark, bleak and full of gore and tna. All that bs is so overrated and overdone." You replied.

So that would mean "Battle: Los Angeles" is like a fake title like "Slusho" for Cloverfield, right? Or perhaps, it's just another alien flick and it is a great way to promote the third game.

Hopefully R3 will take place in Jap'n some nice verticality is what was always needed in Resistance 2's combat which is why i loved the Chicago section and hated the forest and flatter areas.

@nvidiagamer Umm can u stop defending one game because its on one system. As a multi-system owner i know all of said games are good, but i think anyone who has played uncharted 2, including Adam Sessler who called it "a game changer in the industry" "Greatest singleplayer experience i have ever played". I believe it innovated more than gears. While i love horde, it had a braindead story and didn't improve much over its predecessor. That is all

  • EdibleFood

@Nvidiagamer seriously your talking **** about a game thats not even out yet... Heavy Rain will be great an not linear like Alan Wake. Your a 360 fanboy. Gears 2 was a flaming pos copy paste sequel.

    @ Darkclaw007
"How does Gears 2 match up perfectly with Uncharted 2? I have nothing against Gears, but Uncharted 2 is genre redefining. Is also does not hurt that the game is damn near flawless in every aspect. Gears 2 is a great TPS, Uncharted is so much more than just a great TPS."

    Exactly...

  • EdibleFood

    Posted Oct 16, 2009 3:38 pm PT

@Nvidiagamer u should really read the reviews... Adam Sessler called it the "greatest singleplayer experience" Ever.... It clearly blends cutscenes with gameplay better than even MGS4, with much more gameplay. Gears of War 2 was a PoS to be honest... Gears 2 and Alan Wake are not even close to comparable to Uncharted 2 and Heavy Rain.... First of all they are completely different genres... Adventure/Shooter, Story Driven adventure/Action... All good games, however they dont deserve comparison

  • nVidiaGaMer

    Posted Oct 16, 2009 3:04 pm PT

@EdibleFood UC2 is not redefining anything.

  • EdibleFood

    Posted Oct 16, 2009 2:43 pm PT

@nVidiaGaMer Umm no, gears 2 was a sequel to gears 1 and changed very little in the cover based shooting genre, Uncharted 2 is redefining the genre... Also Alan Wake is unreleased and all we have seen is clumsy movement reminicent of RE4 and mediocre cutscenes

I played both Resistance and Gears of War series, and have to say that GoW was more enjoyable to play, although just barely due to hardcore feel of GoW series. I am however glad for game rental services that allowed me to play both series -- I wouldn't want to miss any of these games. Here's an idea: how about Chimera vs. Locust spinoff game?

I loved the online co-op elements of R2, but I will be much happier if they also decide to bring back offline co-op for R3....(I mean an offline co-op that's the same campaign as solo player that is)

Hopefully it will be for 2011, because Insomniac rushed through R2 IMO.The fact is they only took a year and a half to make the game, and if its true that they are currently developing R3 and comes out in 2011, chances are that the game will be really good.

I bought the R2 without even playing the first Resistance. I have yet to play the campaign or the multiplayer. Co-op had me sold and it was all I played. I enjoyed being the medic at first, then I was forced to become a Soldier and I hated the Spec op but after figuring them all out. I have come to enjoy them all and LOVE the spec op.

Assuming it's true, this is pretty much a new low in product placement and corporate sponsorship between entertainment industries. I don't know which is worse... the movie soliciting cash to fund their film seemingly at random for something that does not yet exist, or the studio looking for ad space two full years in advance of a release ... and both side thinking that no one would notice and thus did nothing to hide it.
