Borderlands golden

Gearbox has sent its cheeky sci-fi "role-playing shooter" to industrial wasteland for manufacturing; Oct. 20 PS3/360 launch, Oct. 26 PC release locked down.

With Dragon Age: Origins pushed into November and Alpha Protocol delayed until 2010, Borderlands is now October's sole North American-developed role-playing game. Luckily, following the slight postponement of its PC version, there will be no more chances for any version of the 2K Games-published title to be delayed.

This afternoon, developer Gearbox Software informed GameSpot that Borderlands has gone gold and is manufacturing for its October 20 launch on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 for $59.99. The Windows edition of the M for Mature-rated game will trail by one week, arriving on October 26 for $49.99. The latter version will also be available for download from a variety of online stores, including--despite some controversial comments by Gearbox head Randy Pitchford--Valve Software's Steam service.

Described as a "role-playing shooter" by Gearbox, Borderlands is a sci-fi action RPG that combines driving and on-foot action. Much like Black Isle Studios' original Fallout games, Borderlands infuses its bleak setting with twisted humor, following a group of treasure hunters who scour the ruins of a collapsed civilization in search of fortune and guns--many, many guns. The game boasts a massive array of unique, collectible weapons that number over a half-million in total.

K-Thrilla: I'm thinking that they're thinking ahead, ship date is Oct.20 so actual shelf date with 1day shipping will have the game on store shelves by the 21st. Can't wait to get my hands on this game, with Demon's Souls allready in hand, Fairytale fights comming one week later and Dragon Age and Assassin's Creed 2 next month I'm going to be one busy gamer. Just hope I don't mix up my button use LOL

Whats up with the television trailer saying its coming out October 21st? Is that a mistake or do I have to wait another agonizing day for this game?

do what you will...but you know that rage probably isn't going to be out for a year or more, right? i'm pretty psyched for that game as well...but unless you've found a way where you can save time that you don't waste now and use it for credit later, what's the harm in sinking hours into this or any other game?
    ....
i'm just keeping my fingers crossed that rage will come out before diablo iii.

it's obvious that different people are going to have different opinions about the art direction this game has taken. to be honest, if it was only about the colors and the way the characters look, i wouldn't care either way. but i have seen in-game footage featuring the previous "realistic" graphical tone and the concept art style...and the way it used to be...it was boring. with millions of guns, copious amounts of blood, and 4-player co-op, this game's main selling point seems to be over-the-top FPS action. the graphics and interface, the way they were...they were reserved. muted. sorta boring. little ping over in the corner when you get experience or level up.
    ....
have you seen the adverts for this game? they get you pumped. if they stuck with the old art style...adverts for the game would double as a sleep aid.

Like others, I think the graphics worked better before the shift to a cell shaded effect. I like action games and I like role playing, but I just can't get into this. With Brutal Legend, Halo 3 ODST, Batman, COD4, and Dragon Age, I just see too many other games on the horizon to waste my time with this.

i'll wait for Rage by id software and EA,....am not really comfortable about getting this Borderland.

I'll prefare using up my scarce Time in Rage than in Borderland.

Rage looks serious and action packed while Borderland seems to be plain Fun and Humor.

    It's just my opinion.........

Well, not much I can say to that. I just hope you don't pass this up on account of the fact that the graphics are cel-shaded. I actually like the graphics; I believe they work perfectly for the accent of the game.

    payne:
I've seen a lot of numbers say half a million and others say 16 million, not sure which is true but they said that you'll only find on average around 10-15 thousand weapons during a complete playthrough

    sony_patriot:
That's not true, there are over 150 different creatures with unique models, here are just a few:
    Crimson Lance
    Bandits
    Alpha Skag
    Gyro Spiderant
    Rakk
    Rakk Hive
    Scythid
    Skag Pup
    Skagzilla
    Soldier Spiderant
Those are 10 of the 150+

Fallout and Borderlands are totally different, even though they both did fps/rpg. Fallout is actually more comparable to ESIV than Borderlands.

    LIES!

You guys completely overlooked Torchlight that's being released on Oct 27, developed by Runic Games who are deffinitely a North American based company. Torchlight is an ARPG in the vein of Diablo and some of the dev team actually worked on Diablo. If you are interested in this genre hit up http://www.torchlightgame.com

    @dynomitemasta

the term cheeky does not actually refer to poorly repressed mirth (and it's not an allusion to "tongue-in-cheek" humor, either). it means brutal: absolutely and unforgivingly brutal. it refers to a 14th century religious practice whereby heretics received a Church-sanctioned "cheeky reprisal" as consequence for sinning and wanton douchebaggery: their cheeks were carved out and fed to hungry dogs. the notion that it has anything to do with humor came around the same time; survivors of this brutal form of atonement lacked cheeks, and therefore appeared to smile much of the time. cheeky fellows.
    ...
so, there you have it. this game will apparently be extremely brutal.

Looks like a poor man's Fallout, but Gearbox is always solid. Still, it's hard to see this game finding a foothold amongst Halo, Uncharted, Ratchet, Modern Warfare, and all the other monsters.

I've been waiting for this game for a while and it looks great but one thing that worries me is that good game (a australian gaming show) got a exclusive preview said the start was boring as all you did was fight skags, then more powerful skags, then boss skags and then all them mixed together.

October is rounding out to be a nice month for gaming. We have OFDR,Demons Souls,Risen, Uncharted 2, Borderlands,Brutal Legend,Magna Carta 2,NBA2K10,DreamKiller,Vandal Hearts, Tekken 6 and FIFA '10 just to name a few. Of course...we have Dragons Age in November along with MW2 which is gonna eclipse every release this year. Both of these games are gonna break some crazy records. We also have LFD2 and AC2 as well as the re-release of the first 2 God of War games and Rogue Warrior for November. Not sure about the rest of you, but I know I'm gonna be a busy gamer for the next couple of months

"when do the reviews usually come out? "

If it's gold now, I would guess at the end of the week. It's a pretty big game though, so it might come out closer to the release date so they can progress far enough before handing out a verdict.

I'm preordering it on steam ^^
