Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time enters golden hour

Latest installment in Insomniac's action-platforming series officially finished, off to the factory in preparation for October 27 launch.

Insomniac's diminutive robot Clank may be made of steel, but today he and his partner Ratchet are officially golden. In a post on the PlayStation blog, the developer announced that work on Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time for the PlayStation 3 had been completed, and the title has entered manufacturing in anticipation of its October 27 release.

A Crack in Time will conclude a trilogy of sorts begun in 2007's Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction and continued last year in the pair's downloadable debut, Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty. The game will follow the lombax Ratchet as he attempts to save his robotic sidekick, and Sony promises to reveal both their origins and ultimate destinies during the course of the game, teasing a breakup along the way.

To promote the launch, Insomniac is offering incentives to those who preorder the game at select retailers. For instance, customers who put their money down early at GameStop will receive access to an Insomniac Moon level based on the developer's actual studio, while Amazon customers will receive 5,000 free bolts (the game's form of currency) and two power-ups that make it easier to acquire more throughout the game. Game Crazy is also offering 5,000 bolts to preorders, but instead of the power-ups, customers will receive a new Hot Rod skin for the titular duo's rocket ship, as well as a special PlayStation Home avatar.

Who cares about the preorder stuff? You can still unlock ALL of that without preordering the game, you just don't get it right away. Example: You can unlock the Insomniac Moon by getting 100% completion. By the way, I am really excited for this game.

Well, it seems you are actually wrong about that. If you read the comments for this article, you can clearly see that a lot of people do care about this series. YOU just don't like the Ratchet and Clank franchise anymore. Last I checked, you aren't everybody.

i cant wait, im so excited for this game. Ive played and own all Ratchet and Clank games including their PSP outing 'Size Matters' but not secret agent clank. Tools of destruction is one of my favorite PS3 exclusive games and it was a blast, can only anticipate for this game to be just as good. Here's to another smash hit game!

Hazaar!! Ratchet and Clank is a wicked cool series. I've got every game (including the PSP ones) and I just don't seem to get bored of it. Just playing through again to see how stupidly OTT the guns can get is one of the things I like. I can'y wait.

The pre-order incentives are just that: incentives, to get people to purchase new copies of the game rather than troll E-Bay or used game piles. Regardless of what you spend at an auction site or used game store, the developers get nothing. They only get to eat off of people that buy new.

Rather than looking for ways to punish second-hand shoppers, developers are adding fun stuff for people that pre-order. Rather than complain, I applaud Insomniac for offering a carrot rather than swinging a stick. I pre-ordered this off of Amazon anyhow; now I get a few extra treats to enjoy.

Never thought I'd see people complain about FREE content, but this site always amazes.

The first game was a bit repetitive for me. I felt like I was doing the same thing over and over again, but with different weapons for different enemies. The game was still good, but not great. I'll probably wait on this one and get it next year. Gotta get Uncharted 2 next week, Infamous off of Ebay, Forza 3 after that and then Dragon Age (XBox 360). Going to be busy this holiday season. I agree, the pre-order stuff is lame. All that stuff should be in the game anyways. Why do you have to pre-order the game to get it? I could understand if it was in the collectors edition or something.

RandC is one of the most overlooked games of the last two generations. And one reason is it has the word plat former in their with charters that look odd and weird to people. They think its an old style jump around funny places game (and thats it.) But the game is vary action oriented and has vary realistic aand fun environments with great stories. Amazing series.

    I love this pre-order #^@$.

Can't get the entirety of the game's content anymore, and now it's to the point where you'd have to pre-order it from multiple sources to get everything, versus the typical GameStop/EB Games thing.

Oh well, looking forward to the game regardless, and curious to see how much more they'll push the PS3 this time around given Resistance 2 did quite a fair bit.
(Crack in Time is using an upgraded version of Resistance 2's engine for those not in the know)

Looks cool I've never played any of the R 'n' C games but im thinkin about playing tools of destruction and quest for booty, cuz they look cool also i just got my ps3 a month ago. Also its a good thing i pre-ordered Uncharted 2 a week ago cuz that looks really cool too aand i just got Demon's Souls yesterday which is really hard but really fun

Already got this puppy on pre-order. Remember when the PS3 was a weird-looking movie player? Now we get Demon's Souls, Uncharted 2, and Clank in a three-week span. The PS3 is having a better month than I did when I lived in Portland with two Suicide Girls and a really nice vinyl couch.

R&C is hands down one of the best developed series of games Period! The 27th can't get here soon enough. In a world of disappointment from most games, Insomniac has never let me down with R&C. Can't wait for the game. Keep up the stellar work Insomniac!

"Unfortunately, it feels like R&C are a bit overshadowed by the wealth of AAA titles coming this fall."

lolno. Ratchet and Clank is one of those AAA titles. In fact, it's better than those other games you mentioned. It's now AAAA because they're just that much more awesome.

"For instance, customers who put their money down early at GameStop will receive access to an Insomniac Moon level based off the developer's actual studio"

However, it's worth noting that Playstation Blog has also confirmed that you can get to the Insomniac Moon in every copy of the game even without a GameStop preorder: you just have to find the hidden entrance to it instead of having it handed to you.

That said, whoo! Is it Oct 27th yet?! I want this game bad.

On the other hand, I always loved R&C, and this one looks better than any of the other ones! And I think R&C should do what Uncharted 2 did and make the graphics amazing. Hi-def space would look awesome.

I still miss the old days when games were $30-$50...
Maybe Blu-Ray will become more common and we can enjoy fairly cheap gaming again someday.

    @ EHGGSZ

    Yeah, developers always do this.

But algood, it never affects the game in my opinion i mean, in infamous we just got those blade power ups and they werent even that good, meaning we dont miss out on anything.
Also, WO! 5,000 bolts, you can make up that many in the game in like 20minutes.

    Posted Oct 8, 2009 11:18 pm PT

Why, oh why is everyone adding content as incentives rather than including it in the game period. Something tells me I may never get a full game at $60 anymore. Game developers won't let me. At least not unless I buy it as soon as it launches.

I want it very badly, but like Ninja gaiden sigma 2, Uncharted 2, borderlands, and several titles I want in coming months, I'm going to wait for employee appreciation for 25% off. Seriously if I'm going to spend $400 on games I might as well save myself $100 of it

Unfortunately due to timing I think I might wait a bit on this one. Uncharted 2, SVR10 and Borderlands are all 1st days for me and I still need to finish MUA2, all this before the big drop November 10th. Then I will probally shoot face for a month straight(I have it off work even) with few breaks for anything else, so it looks like I might get to this in December. Hope it tops Up Your Arsenal, that would be killer.
