Shippin' Out Oct. 11-17: Uncharted 2, Brutal Legend

Naughty Dog's top-rated action adventure cracks jokes with Double Fine's roadie rampage, while Fallout 3: GOTY lifts off with Where the Wild Things Are.

Naughty Dog's first excursion into the universe of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is regarded by many to be among the best games released for the PlayStation 3. And any questions about whether Naughty Dog would be able to deliver a worthy follow-up in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves have already been answered in resounding form.

Out this week exclusively on the PS3, Uncharted 2 again sees wisecracking treasure-hunter Nathan Drake, along with a vibrant supporting cast of characters, on the hunt for pay dirt and moving out of the way of bullets. Beyond its third-person shooting gameplay, players will also navigate treacherous platforming while solving ancient puzzles to secure their booty. The game also introduces both competitive and cooperative multiplayer to the series.

Uncharted 2 won't be the only action adventure with a sense of humor heading to retail this week. Having settled its legal dispute with Activision, Tim Schafer's Double Fine Studios will release the Jack Black-led Brutal Legend for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Double Fine's first effort since the critical darling Psychonauts, Brutal Legend follows the travails of metal-enthused roadie Eddie Riggs, who has an axe to grind in a rock-themed, demon-filled alternate dimension.

Bethesda Softworks has Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition on tap this week for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. The package compiles all five previously released Fallout 3 downloadable content packs: Broken Steel, Operation Anchorage, The Pitt, Mothership Zeta, and Point Lookout. The console editions of the game will retail for $59.99, while the PC package can be had for $49.99.

With Maurice Sendak's superlative children's story Where the Wild Things Are making its big-screen debut on Friday, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will be kicking things off with a game adaptation on Tuesday. Available for the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and DS, the game lets players assume the role of Max and tells a story that accompanies the film though does not mirror it.

Nintendo is having no problems getting Wii MotionPlus add-ons into consumers hands, having sold nearly 3 million units through August. Still, the publisher will be incentivizing the package this week with a Wii Sports Resort bundle that includes two MotionPlus pack-ins for $59.99. Nintendo's console also has Konami's Scene It? Twilight dawning this week, along with Sega's Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and Scribblenauts developer 5TH Cell's Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter coming to the Wii and DS. Nintendo's Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky will also land on the DS this week.

Sony's PlayStation platform will receive two new SingStar installments this week. PS2 gamers can pick up SingStar Latino, while PS3 owners can croon along with SingStar Motown. Other new releases this week include Agetec's Way of the Samurai 3 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, as well as THQ's multiplatform Cars Race-O-Rama.

For further details on the week's games, visit GameSpot's New Releases page. The full list of downloadable games on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace, and the Wii Shop Channel will be revealed later this week. Release dates are based on retailer listings and are subject to change.

    Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition. the reason why I didn't buy fallout 3 when it first came out. They did it with Morrowind and they did it with Oblivion. I did not see why they where not going to do this with Fallout 3 as well. im glad i waited.

    @xBloodknightx and Banana23man

    I passed 16 a while ago but you're right I don't have to pay car payments...I own both of my cars. If you two guys could read my message and somehow attach an age to it then you're both cousins of The Amazing Kreskin. I understand the state of finances in the country today but what does that have to do with this topic? My point is that if you want 8 games that are coming out you be RESPONSIBLE to your situation and get one today and one sometime later when you can afford it. You don't just whine and pick one. Correct me if I'm wrong but you can still play Uncharted today and you'll still have fun. I play Burnout Paradise more than any other game I own and it's over a year old. Rockband is over 2 years old but is that not fun anymore simply because it didn't come out last week? Both of you should grow up, get girlfriends, and jobs. Then you wouldn't have to whine about so much. And you can check my trophies if you really want to know how many games I have (hint: more than both of you combined).

    My apologies to the rest of the readers as it's not meant for 90% of you, only the ones who complain at everything instead of enjoying the games. Seriously, how can you look at this week's releases and find anything to complain about (except that Borderlands won't be out til NEXT week)?

    I hope Brutal Legend does well. Tim Schafer is brilliant, and the man behind Day of the Tentacle, Grim Fandango, and Psychonauts deserves a big payday. In an industry dominated by 'me-too' hacks, he's a true original.

    @GodsPoison

    You should try the first Uncharted out, if that's the reason you're not interested in the 2nd one. It's like saying "I'm not getting a game, because I've never played games" - which is just plain dumb.

    Clearly you are only a PS3 gamer, as Brutal Legend is the "big" release for 360 this week. Also check out the review for Brutal Legend on Metacritic. I think that people are going to be shocked at how good this game might actually be.

    Brutal legend should be shipping at a later date,uncharted 2 is going to bury it. I really don't see what's so great about brutal legend anyways,it looks stupid and the graphics sucks!

    Uncharted 2 + Brutal Legend = $60.

    Do T3G1F by finding games that qualify and only cost $10. I might even pick up Fallout 3 for another $30.

    And the gaming season truly begins.

    Next week is Borderlands, then Forza, next is Dragon Age, Modern Warfare follows, and finally L4D and Assassin's Creed. I am getting 8 games for $240. Awesome.

    I might rent Mario and Sonic: winter olympics. In my opinion, it looks fun and better than the first one.
