EyePets kenneled 'til 2010 in US

[UPDATE 2] GameStop's online database indicates EyeToy-compatible interactive animal-raising game has been bumped to next year; Sony confirms delay for US, re-affirms October 23 date for EU launch.

Sony's EyeToy for the PlayStation 3 hasn't enjoyed the most robust of support since its October 2007 release. However, that could soon change with the introduction of Sony's new camera-based motion-sensing controller, which the publisher first trotted out during its 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo presence and is expected to arrive in spring 2010.

One game that will apparently accompany Sony's impending EyeToy push will be EyePet, an animal-raising sim in development at Sony's London studio. With EyePet having previously been penciled in for a fall 2009 release in the US, GameStop has recently updated its online database to indicate that the game is now expected to ship on April 4, 2010. Sony had not responded to requests for comment as of press time.

[UPDATE] Shortly following the publication of this article, a Sony America rep confirmed that EyePet has been pushed out of 2009, at least in the USA.

"The North American territory has decided to take additional time to focus on the EyePet product and can confirm it will not be available this holiday," the publisher said in a statement. "EyePet is an innovative and exciting new IP to the PS3 platform and SCEA marketing will spend additional time to continue educating consumers and retail channels, setting the table for a successful product launch. We will provide more details on an updated launch timeframe very soon."

[UPDATE 2] When contacted by GameSpot UK, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe confirmed that the American delay was an isolate case, saying, "We're still set for October 23rd."

Notably, Sony said as part of the 2009 Tokyo Game Show that EyePet would be among the handful of titles that would have motion-control support patched in when the device is released. Sony has yet to narrow down the release window for the North American launch of its new controller, though it is expected to be available in Japan in March.

EyePet allows players to create and raise a simian-looking creature. Players can then interact with the animal by making physical motions that are detected and relayed by the EyeToy camera.

For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of EyePet.

Yes it has been delayed BUT remember the PS3 is region free just import the game. I imported from the UK and even with shipping and handling its cheaper then buying it in the US. I payed only 53 dollars for it total. Saved myself 7 bucks and get it months ahead.

I am still in 2 minds about whether to buy this or not for my 4 year old daughter. On one hand it does look fun but it is a little limited in terms of content. I mean, me and her can sit and play Wii Sports Resort for a good hour and we have tons of choice. But with this all you do is interact with it a little and draw pictures with it. Initially I bet it'd be amazing but the novelty would probably wear thin after a few hours. Then again, I will need the camera for when the PS Motion Eye controller is released so maybe I should just go for it. I just don't know!

It's not my type of game, but you have to admit, it is astounding how fast motion sensing technology is evolving
This and Natal both amaze me

Ah, finally something is out in the PAL regions first. About time, we normally have to wait 3-4 months.

Whenever this product comes out it's a day one purchase for my family. It looks amazing to me, and my daughter will absolutely love it.

I'm sure this is going to be a great innovative game and all BUT I'm not going to be caught dead playing this game because if I was my man card is going to get revoked and no amount of physical activities with the opposite *** would ever get it back.

Bummer. I planned on buying this for my 3.5-year-old daughter this Christmas. Guess we'll have to wait for her birthday!

My kids are really excited for this game. The October 2009 issue of Qore had a feature on this game and my girls were very interested in it. I can see them getting my money's worth out of this thing when it releases. They love virtual pets. My kids will be upset that this game isn't coming until next year. I can't say it's something I'm too upset about, but I don't think I'm the target demographic. The game is interesting and shows that the PlaystationEye can do some cool stuff and boosts my hopes for Sphere.

I'm not entirely sure how many people this will upset but if this turns out to be true it is nothing short of a farce. Europe keeps getting the localisation excuse for delayed games but how can a game that already has English possibly have a reason for the delay?

The region division between each SCE territory is closing but still needs alot of work.

If you could raise a pet that wasn't all cutsie and cuddly then may be it would be worth looking into. You should be able to raise vicious dogs or lions etc. then train them to fight and pit them against other peoples pets. A cute green little monkey dog thing that runs around the screen will get boring real quick.

I think it is called the PS3 EYE now, not EyeToy. That was with the PS2...

I'm finding myself increasingly interested in 'augmented reality' stuff. Chances are this particular project I could take or leave (I can't imagine as a game it'll hold my interest for very long) but if it is successful in creating a responsive augmented environment then I'm definitely interested in what it can achieve.

@hatieshorrer "...give me a break. Sony has never tried to be its own console theyve always tried to do something as similar to what Nintendo was doing..."

wow a nintendo fan bashing Sony how original! First off the Playstaion WAS supposed to be a Nintendo add on in the first place, but Nintendo backed out of the deal and so we got the original playstation. But as for being different than Nintendo how about it was disc based (which got them square enix who left Nintendo for PS1), how about dual analog sticks (they were first with that), how about the crossbar navigation bar menu on the psp (then used on ps3 now everyone copies its format), how about they were first with motion control!! (even before the Wii they had the eye-toy which had similar games, so who copied whom!?), and most important in my opinion - how about DVD playback!! DVD sales skyrocketed tenfold when ps2 came out, and now bluray playback is ruling HD mainly due to the ps3. How about internet access, Nintendo did it AFTER Sony! Sony may copy the best parts of other systems (like online, rumble, and trophies) but it made online free, and made innovative things like Home and folding at home. (I dont personally like home). But they are 100% their own system.

    @cross84

lol give me a break. Sony has never tried to be its own console theyve always tried to do something as similar to what Nintendo was doing first tumbsticks then rumble years later motion sensing controls and now this is loosely inspired by Nintendogs. Its not a copy and maybe we need more games like Nintendogs and Eyepet but Sony has never been an innovator of video games.
