In March, Florida police raided the home of a 43-year-old man and found drugs, weapons, stolen property, and a Wii. According to a report from the local NBC News affiliate, a security camera caught multiple detectives playing Wii Sports bowling during the nine-hour period following the raid.

"How do you explain it," Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd told the affiliate. "Well, you can't explain that; my deputies know that they shouldn't have been playing Wii while they were involved in that search warrant."

The raid involved 16 detectives pulled from the sheriff's office and three area police departments, with a total cost to taxpayers of $4,000. An internal investigation has been launched, and Judd told the affiliate he will wait to see its conclusions before deciding on disciplinary measures.

"It's an embarrassment to the detectives involved, and it's an embarrassment to the organization," Judd said. "But you know what? We employ 1,800 people and not one of them is perfect. We all make mistakes. They made a mistake."

Played Wii for 9 hours? Sounds like punishment enough. But... The most important question... Who won?

  • Harerazer

    Posted Sep 29, 2009 8:55 pm PT

It's not like they were seen smoking/sniffing the drugs or shooting off rounds in the backyard. They were playing the Wii during the hours FOLLOWING the raid. Sure you could find something to fault them for but what's the alternative? Would it have been better if the cameras showed them sitting drinking coffee for nine hours? This is simply too dumb to even post as news.

    That's just stupid Leejjohno...
Really... nobody is perfect we all have our flaws, and are easily tempted by different things.
People that are policemen, are just normal people that dedicate their working time under a certain set of rules like anybody else working, which implies the application of the laws. That's all. They are not asked to be perfect, heck, they do not even need to have a great education.

People who make "mistakes" aren't fit to be police officers. "Nobody is perfect" What kind of rationale is that?

Some of you are ridiculous. I'm sure there will be administrative action taken against those officers, but to be fired over it? That would be like some of you taking your iPhones and Blackberries out and responding to a text during your work hours. Are you going to get fired for that? It's the same thing! And the report said they were there for 9 hours serving the search warrant...not playing for 9 hours. Don't read into things so much.

@wildarmx. They weren't playing for just a few min's.They played the wii for 9 hours I even took this from an article from msnbc about this story. A security camera they missed, showed detectives also discovered a fun video game to play, Wii bowling. And over the course of the next 9 hours, the game was on.
See?It was just not a few min's it was 9 hours.IMO that is pretty absurd when you got a job like that and instead you play wii for 9 hours.Sure if it actually was just a few min's of them playing it I could understand that everybody gets bored at their jobs and likes to slack off for a few mins but 9 hours?Totally unprofessional.

This may be a strike against the police department and its members, but I surely hope there was more than one strike bowled during the game. Gun range or bowling range: how do your local police officers hone their skills?

well using this forum and its thumbs up and thumbs down as a statistic, it's not wonder this country if falling to crap. It seems that if you want to hold people responsible (such as breaking the law, including you being rapped) you get a thumbs down. BUT if you think anyone should be able to do whatever they want, you get a thumbs up. No wonder the human race is wiping themselves off this planet...

    @MetalwolfX

The only point I am trying to make is that when the police pull someone over, not once (and i've been pulled over 101 times and had 6 breathalyzers and 3 drug searches, when i've never drank or tried drugs my entire life) have they said or implied "you know what, people make mistakes, just try to be safe and respectful of others". Nope, their judgemental eyes (which they obviously judge given that i've been searched and tested for a DWI soley based on my profile) have already concluded that you were doing something wrong and you needed to be punished. Well..they were doing somethign wrong and need to be punished. Because this country has a MASSIVE problem holding the right people (or anyone at all) responsible for their actions.

@Jettero-Heller - Exactly what I was thinking.. so many of these scumbag cops go around treating normal people with such an unbelievable level of disrespect because they supposedly have "better things to do with their time".. which is apparently contaminating a crime scene while goofing off playing a kiddy system..

Eh. I've seen cops do worse things.

Really, they've got a tough job. They put their lives on the line, and get treated like crap while they're on duty. I figure they can slack for a day.

I'm sure the cost of the break they took was far less than $4000. They make it sound like all 16 detectives played games for the entire 9 hours. Exaggerated moral outrage hyped up by the media. Bah.

LOL people whining about 4000 dollars in taxes. That's, like, pennies when you compare it to how much money is contributed in taxes EVERY day in Florida. Five minutes, IF that, probably paid for that. OOOOOooh the horror! Then again, I hate it when I'm working my butt off, earning my pay, and I see one of my co-workers not doing jack and getting paid just the same. For that reason, I think they should be punished...because others who were on duty were putting their lives on the line while they soaked up pay to play a mediocre game.
