What we heard: Rumor geysers are an elusive lot, making their eruptions all the more special. Today, perhaps the biggest of the year thus far made its presence known, when alleged minutes from a meeting between Sony Computer Entertainment America and Sega found their way online.

First spotted by French site Objectif-Sega, the information purportedly comes from Sega of America's press site, where it was ostensibly inadvertently uploaded. Before being removed from Objectif-Sega, the purportedly leaked info was reprinted on the NeoGAF message boards. The document notes that the meeting took place on August 5, meaning some of the purported information has already come to pass.

According to the minutes, the meeting began with Sony stating that a "big announcement" would occur during the back half of the year, one that has since revealed itself to be Sony's introduction of the PlayStation 3 Slim and concomitant $100 price cut. Interestingly, Sony then purportedly narrowed down the spring 2010 launch date of its new motion controller, saying it is expected to launch in Japan in March.

The alleged meeting then shifted to software, with perhaps the most notable reveal being that Sony intends to sell all PlayStation 2 titles through the PlayStation Network. There was apparently some discussion about bringing Dreamcast games to the PSN, with the minutes note stating, "If we provide a list of DC titles, SCEA will let us know which ones they're interested in having exclusively. If we give them a long period of exclusivity, they'll give us more marketing support."

A few other tidbits of information were contained in the document. Namely, Sega apparently intends to launch its latest PlatinumGames collaboration Bayonetta on January 5, with a possible demo coming sometime around Christmas. On the topic of Amusement Vision's gangster-themed action adventure Yakuza, the minutes mention that Japanese releases could be added to the PSN under "a special Japanese Import section," with price points ranging from $9.99 to $39.99.

Sega also allegedly floated the idea of issuing a Sonic Anniversary collection, which would see all previously released Sonic games being compiled on one Blu-ray Disc for "around $99."

The official story: Neither Sega nor Sony had responded to requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: The document itself has an air of authenticity to it, if only because of its stuffy, corporate annotations. Further, the information contained in the document all seems entirely plausible, and in some cases, has already come to pass. Looking not bogus.

All? That's a LOT of bandwidth and the costs of having all of the games on there probably wouldn't translate to that much profit. I think whether or not the report is accurate it'll end up being select titles from the PS2 as well.

Unless I'm reading it wrong :p

This is great considering I want to play MGS 4. I haven't played the earlier ones, but if they release them on PSN, that would be great!

I will love this if it means I don't have to buy them again and I can just pop the disc in my ps3 to play as well. No backwards compatablilty with a ps2 + ps2 memory card icon still here = tease. I think it was a mistake to take away the backwards compatability, but the rest can go if needed.

This would be no more then a costless emulation via ps3 CPU and would be terrific. And btw, they shouldn't have made the ps1 emulation options so limited versus the ps2's backwards compatability, as it was cool to have texture smoothing. It would be interesting to see Ps3 add shader effects in the options of the ps1 and ps2 games too.

ps2 we had 7 years ago broke down 2 months ago. everytime I read the game it won't read it at all. It is great. If I don't get a new ps2 slim. I'll get a ps3 and download classic games online.

This would be sex. My PS2 after 8 years is finaly starting to die. My PS1 at about... 14 years old is still running. with the gameshark in the back ^_^ and the first dualshock controller... Which never really worked on any PS1 game I owned. Can't wait if this is true. I still havent beat Dark Cloud. My PS2 wont read it >.>. Now I shall make sausage.

I don't see why this can't happen. Soul Calibur is available on Xbox live already. I think that the better way to re-release PS2 games would be like what they are doing with the GOW games, by adding HD support, and trophies.

My 160Gb PS3 doesn't play PS2 games, not too much of a problem cos I have a PS2, but I think it's poor if I'm going to be denied a whole bunch of download games. I suspect if Sony see a way in which they might make money out of me, they may decide to release some kind of miraculous software update allowing me to play these games. Hmmm.

Why so much hate for this people? Don't see how this effects you or your gaming. If you're a hardcore classic gamer--even to the Dreamcast then you probably already have all the great titles.

$99 for a blu ray? it doesn't matter how many classic game in a disk, $99 it will be to expansive and no one will buy it, most of the computer users have emulator classic on there computer and playing those games for free. $50 i will get it. but not $99. plus i read that sony is making a ps2 emulator for the ps3, and dreamcast on psn will be great. love dreamcast.

    Re: Classic Player

I was unaware of said limitations of the 60GB PS3...

I just finished Rogue Galaxy (PS2) on my PS3 without any hiccups over 80 hours of gameplay. I have also completed FF XII and played Ratchet and Clank (PS2) and Vagrant Story (PS) without issues. Sure I have had a few problems, namely getting to the last disc of FF VIII (PS) and being told the last disc was incompatible, and some rendering issues with Jak & Daxter (PS2), but on the whole my experience with older games has been good.

Well, I'm not a PS3 hater or anything like that and I just LOVE many old titles, but I think it's really sad that SONY's "new" exclusive titles are in fact about 10 years old and not even updated for graphics and the like.
How about giving us some new stuff using the power of the PS3 and BlueRay? Just a thought.

it should be good, because alot of the classics are so hard to get hold of now, like the ratchet and clank series, ive looked for ages to find them.

I think this is a good move from Sony, considering only the 60GB PS3 (which I got on launch) can ONLY play PS1 and PS3 games. I think they looked at Microsoft and Nintendo and decided to use that too, well hopefully they won't be overpriced like the PSP games on PSN.

It's probably just a rumor. But I owned the Dreamcast and it rocked. To have several Dreamcast games available for download or on 1 disc for $100? It'd actually convince me to get a PS3. If Sony would start putting things like THAT on PS3, it'd win me over.

Great as long as the games are between $10 to $15. I kept my best ps2 games in the hopes that Sony would add ps2 compaibility as a software download. It would be a shame to have to pay full price again for games I already own.

@Scianix-Black: Agreed. Rather than backward compatibility, Sony's going the download route with their back catalog. It's the MAIN reason I own a Wii (Virtual Console rocks). But one of my gripes about VC is that some of the niche titles I like still aren't available. If Sony will fix that with the PS3, then they'd have built the better mouse trap.

    @Typhoonexhale:

No, this doesn't mean the new model PS3s can play PS2 discs.

Yes, they're pulling a PSP Go.

I can get a dreamcast system from GameFellas I wont bother paying PSN for them. why the love for dreamcast from sony all of a sudden didn't they kill the dreamcast??? I was 18 at the time so i do remember that console war. I hope that no one buy DC from the psn just buy a DC from a pawn shop. they are still out there.

So hold on does this mean that ps3 will finally play ps2 discs as well? if it can play ps2 games of of the PSN then there is no reason why it can't at least play that very same game on a Original PS2 disc as well unless of course sony is pulling another PSP go on us and forcing us to re buy all of our PS2 games

@FF_fan2004 "All this stupid region malarcky was what made me fork out for the PS2 chipped in the first place. ..... will not ship it to Britain because of some licensing rubbish.... Sony are greedy, effing, barstewards"

you obviously understand very little in the business world. First off this is NOT a Sony thing at all, in fact ALL legal companies that distribute all VHS, DVD, television, and most video games are set up this way, (CDs would have been if they had been manufactured and coded differently). Its called region coding and it is not to hurt you as a consumer, it is to help the people who own the IP around the world in their respective territories.
