New Xbox 360 wireless adapter incoming, no solo 250GB HDD

Last night at a multiplayer preview event in Los Angeles, Microsoft unveiled a limited edition Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle. For $100 more than the now-$299 Xbox 360 Elite, the bundle will contain a custom-skinned 360, two wireless controllers, a headset, a copy of Modern Warfare 2, and an expanded 250GB hard drive.

Unfortunately, current Xbox 360 owners with jam-packed hard drives won't be able to buy the biggest model solo any time soon. "We have no plans to release a stand-alone 250GB hard drive at this time," a Microsoft rep told GameSpot. (Those plans may change, however, if, as rumored, Sony releases a 250GB PlayStation 3.)

Microsoft also confirmed current stand-alone Xbox 360 hard drives will remain at their current prices for the time being. Right now, the 120GB external drive has a suggested retail price of $149.99, while the $99.99 60GB drive comes bundled with three months of Xbox Live and a wired headset. (Some retailers, such as Amazon, list the 120GB drive as having a list price of $159.99.)

Microsoft declined to comment on a Federal Communications Commission filing (spotted by Gizmodo), which reveals the company is readying a new, high-speed wireless adapter for the Xbox 360.

The new add-on will be able to use the high-speed 802.11n wireless standard, versus the current model, which only supports 802.11b, 802.11g, and 802.11a. An image obtained by Gizmodo (pictured) shows it will also sport two antennae, versus the current adapter's one, and will have same matte-black finish as the Elite 360. It is expected to be released later this year when the Xbox Live Video Marketplace will begin offering 1080p streaming video, which the new adapter is better-suited to handle.
