160GB PS3 $350 on Amazon, 120GB $199 with Sony Card deal

Though Sony's ongoing ad blitz is heavily touting the new $299 120GB PlayStation 3 Slim, not everyone is crazy about the console's new 2001: A Space Odyssey monolith-like form factor and matte finish.

Well, for now, those preferring the glossy-finish PS3 have an option in the form of Amazon's $50 reduction of the $399.99 160GB Uncharted bundle. So for just $50 more than the Slim, gamers will get a PS3 with 40GB more of memory, Naughty Dog's critically lauded action adventure, and a voucher to download the PSN game PAIN.

[UPDATE] Since this article was first published, Amazon raised the Uncharted bundle price to $359.99 and then lowered it back down to $349.99.

The $349.99 160GB PS3 deal will apparently last as long as supplies of the discontinued bundle are in Amazon's warehouses. However, once that ends, gamers can still get a 120GB PS3 Slim for $199, provided they have decent enough credit to get a Sony Card Visa. Approved applicants will get $100 credited to their account after their "first qualifying purchase of $299" and over--including the PlayStation 3.

Though the PS3 will initially cost $299, a $100 credit will be applied to the cardholder's account eight to 12 weeks later, much like getting a rebate check. Cardholders can then simply spend the $100 credit on the account as they wish on any items, game-related or not, anywhere a Visa Card is accepted. Or, more simply put:

$299 initial price - $100 credit (applied to account later) = $199 final pre-tax price.

Since there is no annual fee, the Sony Card can then be canceled, or kept to earn credit toward other Sony products. The on-again, off-again Sony Card deal has offered similar savings to prospective PlayStation buyers as far back as 2001, when the PlayStation 2 was $299.

    Is this still true the $100 back with the card? I'm just seeing $50 back with your 1st $250 purchase.

    Oh, BTW, on the whole Sony credit card statement credit deal, I got the card about 2 weeks ago, bought the PS3 slim immediately, got it in four days, just got my billing statement, and the $100 credit is already reflected. It seriously works.

    @Swampthing

    I completely agree. I have been obsessed with Valkyria Chronicles and browsing the Playstation store library (what you bought is exactly on my "to get" list), writing down titles I would like to get in the near future (just had to try Fat Princess first, though). I'm just hoping that they put Suikoden II on the playstation network someday (since the first one is up there already). The first one is fun, but I would love the second (especially at the PSN price).

    @ The_Dragon_Born both the 20 and 60 have hardware emulation. The actual "Emotion Engine" on the board. The earlier 80gb sku's had software emulation. After that no more BC. You should be able to pick up a 60gb for around 300-350 on ebay.

    I believe they are not being sold new any longer unless you are lucky and happen to find one somewhere. In fact they are probably selling used for more than a new Slim costs. You can tell if a PS3 is backward compatible with PS2 by the number of USB ports. 4 ports means it is compatible and 2 ports means it is not. Now you can break that down further because the original PS3 used hardware for the PS2 compatibility. Sort of like having a PS2 built into the system. The later models used software emulation for the PS2 compatibility. I think only the 80GB models used software emulation. I am not sure which is the better system although I have heard it mentioned the 60GB model is the one to have so I would guess hardware emulation is better. Personally I would look for an original 60GB model and stick a 250GB hard drive in it if I had the cash and my wife would let me. Unfortunately a slim is probably the best I will ever get along with a used PS2. Ebay would probably be your cheapest source for a PS3 BC system.

    Does anyone know which ps3 setup has the BC? Is it only on ebay or can you still buy them somewhere else?

    I've owned and enjoyed an Xbox 360 and never really considered the PS3 until the Slim arrived. Picked one up and now I'm enjoying RESISTANCE, UNCHARTED, LITTLE BIG PLANET, and INFAMOUS. Not a lot of exclusives. but enough good games to warrant a system purchase for me... I love UNCHARTED most of all. Also dabbled a bit with HOME. Now is the time to pick up that PS3 with the price drop!

    Well damn, I almost feel ripped off on mine now, but oh well, 18 months same as cash at Best Buy works. Seriously to those not sure, I bought my PS3 just this past Sunday after my 360 took a dump with the same error for the second time in 2 months. In just those few days, I already like the PS3 more than my 360 that I've owned for 2 years, and have already switched my preorders over to the PS3. I'm not saying ditch the 360 as there is still the Halo games to play and the Fable series, but do yourself a favor and get a PS3 as well at is the superior system.

    @method115

    Trust me, you want to get a PS3. It may not be the RPG giant the PS2 was, but I think that'll be changing soon enough. And besides, with Demon's Souls coming out this October, who wouldn't want a PS3 (besides sissies)? That's a game no one should be without, let alone a fan of RPGs. And besides, there's other great exclusives already out, and even more coming soon. Heavy Rain looks like it's going to be an awesomely unique ride, and LittleBigPlanet GoTY brings the awesome creativity of the original plus a fair amount of the DLC and other goodies (just to name a few, there's plenty more, but I'm trying to be conservative here).

    To the news itself. If I didn't already have 60GB, I would jump on this. Seriously, whoever decides to pass this up has to be on some sort of illegal substance, or abusing a legal one. Chances are you're not going to find a better deal on the PS3 (and seeing as it's the best console, a better deal in general) for a very, very long time.

    I'm really torn on if I should get a PS3 or not. The last time I got one it didn't have almost any games that I actually wanted to play. It seems to have more now but nothing that is absolutely necessary I had MGS series. I do want to the play Valkyrie Chronicles I love RPGs.

    Good deal,already got the PS3 2 Black Fridays ago for that price though,loll,but it didn't have 160 GB,although I can't see myself using that much memory without downloading full games,which we haven't made a complete transition into yet.

    360 and PS3 4eva and yes I'm saying the Wii is inept,and yes I'm a fanboy but who cares,it's fun to argue:p You could call Democrats fanboys,Republicans fanboys,people who like Caribou Coffee more than Starbucks fanboys,...w/e

    13.2% variable? Well, I've seen worse. But whether you actually get the 13.2% or get bumped up to something in the 20's, they aren't going to tell you that until you enroll.

    I don't like that 1 dollar minimum finance fee though.... nor those variable late fee's

    @im-a-roustabout

    Your credit score is affected negatively by closing accounts that have not been open for very long AND leaving open accounts with $0 balance (Accounts that are never used). Credit bureaus like to see accounts that are used regularly and paid off regularly. Slay is right, look it up anywhere.

    @ultra_monkey I agree with you, but don't forget most Gamespotters, like me, are American and these kids are too busy watching Barney or MTV than to be bothered to learn basic math from their teachers! It's almost embarassing that some of these people need an explanation on how this works but once again I chalk it up to the maturity level of some of these posters not taking the time to actually read the article thoroughly.

    That's a really awesome deal. Buy a PS3 slim and get $100 credit (Thanks for the correction heznave). Plenty of small games like Fat Princess, BF1943, or even go for the smaller things like add-on content for Rock Band, LittleBigPlanet, System Themes. Map Packs for W@W, KZ2, and etc...really great deal.

    People need to stop trying to think of ways of cheating the promotion (it's a good deal IMO). If you don't have a problem with credit card use (like getting into deep debt), go for it.

    Hum a $300 PS3 with $100 rebated for use for games or other stuff... Hey if you were going to buy one anyhow you might as well save $100. Sure you have another credit card you have to clean off the rebate from and then chop it up or shove it in a drawer or something, but with no annual fee this is free money if you were going to buy a PS3 anyhow.

    the main idea is u pay 300 and if u have good credit u qualify 4 the card=spend 300 get 100 back in a card (another thing 2 do is use that card on ebay rather than go 2 gamestop gamecrazy etc) that is what i would but i already have a ps3.

    Yeah, the math on this deal is not that hard. They put $300 on the credit card. You make payments (at 0% interest) for a couple of months. Then they put the $100 credit on the card and you only owe $200 (minus the payments you've already made). The end price you pay for the PS3 is $200. Stay in school kids. You need the math classes.
