Capcom prepping Okami sequel?

What we heard: If Clover Studios had to go, Okami represented a fine swan song. The studio, which formed in 2004 under a number of Japanese gaming industry heavyweights, was shut down by Capcom in October 2006, not a month after the acclaimed action adventure saw release for the PlayStation 2 in the US. That game was ported to the Wii in 2008, courtesy of God of War: Chains of Olympus developer Ready at Dawn.

It now appears as if the Okami franchise may live on beyond its Wii port, if a relatively new trademark filing with the Japanese Patent Office is any indication. As first spotted by Siliconera and translated by GameSpot, Capcom filed to trademark the term Okamiden with the JPO in July 2009 (application no. 2009-051624). In its description, items ranging from video game software to mobile phone straps and collectible trading cards could be covered by the trademark.

Unfortunately, the trademark filing does not offer any additional details. However, with the Tokyo Game Show set to run September 24-27, Capcom still has a substantial venue yet open to it to make the reveal.

The official story: Capcom had not returned requests for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: With so little information to go on, this one's bogus for now. However, Capcom certainly has the option open, even if it did shut down the studio that made the well-received original.

They should. It is a fresh game and has MUCH potential maybe it hurts them to not do sequels and remakes?

If this did come out, it would be either on the DS or Wii due to the style of gameplay being so perfect for the system. And I say yet again, another great title for the great Wii or DS Library. Don't get mad when it comes out for the Wii or DS because it will be on one of those.

I really hope this comes to ps3 cuz i'm not buying a wii for this and capcom better make it as good as the original( hopefully better) cause DMC4 and RE5 were kinda disappointing compared to previous games in the series.

Some really great game studios go down in flames... This is one of Capcom's greatest offenses in my book.

I just hope this game is as good as the first and doesn't make the same mistakes other game sequels did.

Hopefully it won't be Wii exclusive either; I don't want to have to buy a Wii just for this game.

@KingKisuke: that's a shame. Hopefully it'll generate enough interest for them to produce further Okami games.

Hopefully that means we can expect great things from Bayonetta.

@kavadias1981: Clover was owned by Capcom, so they were a bit more than just the publisher. It does seem that top talent from Clover has moved to Platinum Games, who are producing Bayonetta.

And here was me thinking that the chance of a sequel was impossible. Now there is a very small ray of hope. Yay!!!

to answer your predicament they will pull a blizzard and use the "borrowed" concept art.. who knows 10 years from now okami may get an online rpg... called world of war..i mean okami

Capcom was just the publisher wasn't it. It was Clover who actually made it wasn't it? How do you create a faithful sequel without the original team of designers and artists? I really enjoyed the original though so we'll see what happens.

If this is Wii-exclusive, I shall die. Then come back to life and start the "Bring Okamiden to PS3/2" campaign. I will NOT buy a console just to play this, as much as I love it. Already did that for the first one. Ahem. FINALLY! This is a long overdue possible sequel. I was prepared to wait ten years for this! Looks like I don't have to. If this is true. Please be true! I am eagerly awaiting the Famitsu edition that comes out on Sep. 3rd that has an article on it! Even if it's not Clover Studio, as long as whoever does it has enough imagination to bring it to the same level as the original.

I saw the kanji for the game name, it means "Legend of God", or "Legend of Okami" if you prefer.

AWW YEAH! Wouldn't it just be amazing to see those graphics in HD? I mean, the PS2 already made this game absolutely beautiful, can you imagine 1080p on the 360/PS3? Oh also, Wii, no thanks. My grandma would appreciate Okami but probably doesn't care.

I hope it sticks to the PS2. I could not play the Wii version because of the unresponsive controls. If they were to fix that, then maybe I'll consider it on the Wii.
Otherwise, I'm skeptical. I love Okami, but a sequel I feel will ruin that feeling.

I would love to see a sequel to Okami (one of the greatest games of all time). Amaterasu should have been one of the greatest heroes of all time on Gamespot. It would be far better than most games nowadays by most of the companies out there. Okami's ending heavily implied a sequel, and for such a great game as it was, it needs it. We also need to see Chrono Break too, for that matter.

even if the studio closed down the people from clover just combined with another people to turn into a new componay so they can be hired by capcom to make a sequal =P

  • Texasguy

    Posted Aug 27, 2009 12:30 pm GMT

I will ignore this for now. I don't want the same dissapointment that followed when Chrono Break never turned into a game.

Having said that an Okami sequel would immediately jump near the top of my most anticipated

Okami is truly a beautiful game, it's takes ages to finish, and trust me that's the furthest thing from a complaint ever Absolutely mesmerizing visuals and audio combine seamlessly to provide pure eye candy and nothing less than a spectacular game. Sequel? Hell yeah!

CAPCOM is known for its love for sequels. I think it's true. It would be beautiful to have an Okami game on this gen of consoles.

Please oh please oh please oh please yes yes yes, let it be truuuue!
If there is any goodness in the world, they will make a sequel. Okami was, and still is, one of the best games I've ever played - I think I'd die with joy if they announced a new one in the makings.
    (Hopefully on the PS3.)

... Then again, if anyone but the original team developed it, that'd pretty much kill my hopes.

There's a high possibility that this has nothing to do with Okami. The Japanese title of this game trabslates to somethign along the lines of "Legend/Way/Life of the God(s)." Okami as a title was kinf od a pun in the first place, since "ookami" can mean both "wolf" and ”god". Both Okami and this new game DO, however, use the kanji for "god" as opposed to "wolf" though, so it's still possible.

This was an awesome game. It took me like 100 hours to finish it (including all extras). The true spirit of an adventure/legend. A remake also would be good idea in HD and no more only-text dialogues which discourage many people (not me though!).

  • Stoneys_Rock

    Posted Aug 27, 2009 7:53 am GMT

Hopefully it'll be as good as the first game and I hope it'll get some of the recognition it deserves.

If they make it it is so worth it with a good fan base for the first game I think they will get some new players in the mix.

This has gotta be a story that deserves a "Yay!", but having said that, lets hope that it's developed as well as the original was, since it will be in the hands of a new team.

There's nothing worse than sullying the name of a beautiful game with a hideous sequel, and Okami was too beautiful to let that happen to it. Judgment is reserved until we know more.....
