In April, Apple reported that nearly 22 million iPhones have been sold worldwide--about 2 million less than the PlayStation 3's current tally. As the multifunctional handheld's installed base grows, publishers are scrambling to port their tried-and-true game franchises to it and its sibling, the iPod Touch.

This week, two popular franchises saw new titles debut on Apple's two platforms. 2K Games announced that Civilization Revolution, the latest installment in the classic strategy series from game designer Sid Meier, is now available on the iPhone. Screenshots released by the company indicate the version of the game will be similar to the well-reviewed DS edition, released last summer. Through Wednesday, the game will cost $4.99 on the App Store, after which it will go up to $9.99.

For fans of old-school shooters, Duke Nukem 3D has also made its way to Apple's portables. Priced at $2.99, the scaled-down version of 3D Realms' 1996 shooter was ported by Machineworks Northwest. The 20-hour game employs a new engine, which uses a trademarked touch-screen system called TapShoot to allow players to lock onto and dispatch foes.

    I recommend getting duke32
    It fixes all the problems with duke 3d
    Including the sound
    Just download duke 32 and put the executable in the same folder as duke nukem 3d
    Start it up and there you go.
    Hope that helps, I'm sorry if you've already fixed this problem.

    That freaking sucks. I tried all day yesterday to get Civ. for 4.99 but it would always tell me to "try again later" "file being modified" So I wasn't able to get it at the reduced price. Thanks for nothing 2k

    Civ Rev for the iPhone will certainly be a quick buy. It's a very nice little game to pass the time if you're on a trip, lunchbreak, etc.

    You know what I like about my DS? I don't get phone calls on it. Seriously, it's...cute that the iPhone gets crappy versions of decent games, but to say it competes in the hand-held market is a bold-faced lie. Maybe once they tackle control/battery life issues it'll be ok, but as for right now I'd much rather have my game system for gaming and my phone for...texting/music/internet/pics/flix/reading books/making fart noises and making the occasional phone call

    Civilization Revolution is a steal. Of course it's not as good a Civ4 but it is amazing game nonetheless. That cheap for a full Civ game. Awesome

    That is an excellent price for Civ Revolution. I played the DS version a while ago, and I have a console copy. But for those that don't have it, or even for those that might already have a console copy, it would be a killer way to pick up a portable copy. I would want to get an Ipod Touch or something, but the price just makes me cringe. That, and I prefer products that are SD-compatible, as I see no reason to not include an SD slot on something like that other than to milk the consumers for more money on internal flash upgrades later. I can get an 8 gig SD card for $20, why would I want to pay $50 to get the same extra flash memory from the 8 gig model to the 16 gig one? And the 32 gig one is another $95 on top of that? No thanks. They're overcharging way too much on their products and on simple storage upgrades that don't even cost half as much as they would want you to think. For that matter, I got an 80 gig PS3, and I'm half tempted to rip out that hard drive and replace it with something that's 25 times the size for a mere $175 or so. I know it's a decent way to market your product to all crowds efficiently, I would just like to be part of the top crowd with the bottom crowd's money.

    iPhone games are great to pass the time with, but they suck up battery life pretty bad. Secondly, the issuse with touch controlls need to be worked out. IMHO, touch controlls have a lot more delay. Some games, like the mega man game, just flat out suck (to me) on the iPhone. Then again, there are people that play iPhone games alot and are used to the delay. *shrug* If i want portable, i'll buy a DS or PSP.

    Duke enthusiasts be aware... the control options right now leave a LOT to be desired. Apparently the devs are working on a fix but it's pretty tough atm to play decently. Civ Rev on the other hand is awesome! A perfect style game for the iPhone design and well worth the purchase at $4.99.

    Now where's my Doom Classic Carmack!?!?!

    I really wish they'd making a fully compatible version (with XP and above) of Duke Nukem 3D on the PC. I want mah sound back!

    It's weird that Gamespot and its users fail to recognize i-phone as a "gaming platform," including myself. I think because the i-phone has no sticks or buttons. Any game system without sticks, mice, or buttons -feels gimped. One day, we might see an i-phone tab at GameSpot but until then, we largely don't seem to miss it.

    Just got the CIV. REV. game for the ipod and played about an hour. So far a great rpg for the iphone. Must get for any ipod owners

    dang gone it. i shoulda got a iphone when my contract ran up last month. not sure why i didnt could have got it for 50 bucks. now every game released for it is like a kick in the nuts=(
