Guitar Hero 5 full setlist sports Nirvana, Queen, Crue

"Smells Like Teen Spirit," "Under Pressure," more flesh out remainder of Activision's 85 playable tunes in upcoming rhythm game, due September 1.

Activision has made a tradition out of teasing out the particulars of any given upcoming Guitar Hero's setlist in short bursts leading up to the game's release. With Guitar Hero 5's September 1 launch quickly approaching, the publisher today pulled back the curtain on the rhythm game's full setlist, announcing among other high-profile tunes Nirvana's genre-defining "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and the Queen/David Bowie collaboration "Under Pressure."

Guitar Hero 5 will feature 85 songs in total, the final 15 of which were announced today. In addition to the aforementioned two, Activision announced tunes that span a number of genres, including Stevie Wonder's "Superstition," Megadeth's "Sweating Bullets," and Blink-182's "The Rock Show." The rest of the tracks announced today, as well as the remainder of Guitar Hero 5's setlist, can be found below.

As with World Tour, Guitar Hero 5 lets gamers accompany playable tunes on the guitar, bass, drums, or microphone. The publisher is also lifting the restriction on the one-instrument, one-player rules that have defined the series. Instead, rhythm rockers will be able to use any combination of instruments for any given song, with Activision giving the example of two guitars and two sets of drums rocking out together.

Guitar Hero 5 will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

@SalFlame I just have one thing to say - play Rock Band. I have nothing against Guitar Hero, i was just playing Guitar Hero 5 actually but i just prefer Rock Band since you buy Rock Band 2 and then download a ton of dlc, never worrying about a new one coming out every month (a la Guitar Hero).

i know guitar hero tries to get songs from different genres to attract more fans, but seriously. having like 8 new era rock and only 1-2 death metal songs is unfair. they need to balance it more. and its tto bad about the costing microsoft points to import songs. only from world tour. not metallica.

I've gotten quite annoyed by all these games. First off, they're all the same game pretty much. Some have better graphics, more features, or better songs than others. Wouldn't it be better if they worked to together to make ONE game that incorporates both games' strong points. Then, rather than making 20 more games that are re-hashed with a little bit better graphics, and a different setlist, just make mother f**king DLC's! Isn't that one of the major reasons for XBL and PSN? Although it would be even better if they just all together STOPPED making them. Maybe one or two per system so that compatibility isn't an issue.

Second, when me and my band are trying to pick songs to cover/play, because the songs were on the latest fake-guitar game, that everybody thinks we got it from that game, and that we have no taste of our own, even if we've been listening to it for years before. Then, we finally find one that we all like, can play, and isn't on RB or GH. We've just got it down today, and I come home and see IT, that song we tried so hard to find, on the latest setlist of GH! What the hell is it with this sh*t? (FYI the song was Steady As She Goes- The Raconteurs)

Also what they really need on there is some Led Zepplin, Rush 2112 stuff, Prince (but he declined) and more classic rock from the 60's and 70's. I'm thinking of not buying this and waiting for Rockband Beatles because most of their songs are blaze. But probably won't because I got a job that's good for at least another two years, LOL. We should all send messages to Prince to get him to change his mind. A lot of people learned the guitar after playing guitar hero.

@ willtking25 You can download "We Are the Champions" now, but yeah your list is actually better then theirs.

    I actually like this setlist.
Balanced, a little something for everybody, and thats what theyre trying to do, not make a death metal fan game or a punk rock game.

I wouldnt mind some bad religion though...

I just don't think Neversoft is sitting down and taking the time to think about what we want to play. So here is my extreme setlist, if they could make this happen it would be Christmas all year.
    1) Bon Jovi- Wanted: Dead or Alive
    2) Queen- We Are the Champions
    3) Jane's Addiction- True Nature
    4) Kiss- God of Thunder(Live)
    5) Motley Crue- Kickstart My Heart
Bonus: Ted Nugent- Kiss My Glock
    6) Smashing Pumpkins- Mayonaise
    7) Weezer- Dope Nose
    8) Nirvana- Come As You Are
    9) Bush- Chemicals Between Us
    10) Blink 182- Dammit
Bonus: Jimmy Eat World- Big Casino
    11) Wolfmother- Dimension
    12) 3 Doors Down- It's Not My Time
    13) No Doubt- Bathwater
    14) Sonic Youth- Silver Rocket
    15) AFI- Girls Not Grey
    Bonus: Coldplay- Life in Technicolor
    16) The Police- Roxanne
    17) Tom Petty- Runnin Down A Dream
    18) Rolling Stones- Start Me Up
    19) Rush- Fly By Night
    20) Lynyrd Skynyrd- On the Hunt
Bonus: Jimi Hendrix- Star- Spangled Banner(Live)
    21) AC/DC- Hell's Bells
    22) Pearl Jam- World Wide Suicide
    23) Poison- Fallen Angel
    24) Def Leppard- Pour Some Sugar On Me
    25) Guns N Roses- Paradise City
    Bonus: Van Halen- Eruption

Don't have time to finish the setlist but stay tuned because this is the tip of the iceberg, the best is yet to come. Will post it in next few days. There will be some songs that will blow your minds! Let me know how yall like it so far.

  • chefbabyryan

    Posted Sep 2, 2009 9:25 pm GMT

what they really need to do is just develop a console game that you can import your own (legally) owned CD's, MP3s etc. into and have it decode and then translate into game notes. I have seen hacked PC versions and it looks sweet! Then it would solve all these issues of personal musical taste. Doesn't seem that complicated, plus it would encourage people to buy more music!!

This setlist really doesn't have me convinced. Besides, I've already pre-ordered my $250 Beatles Rock Band so this'll have to wait.

It suffers the only way these set lists have always suffered: I only like 25% of the songs. The Beatles: Rock Band is going to spoil me. I'll like every song. O_o

ok.. i just got one question.. Y the hell do they keep puttin rock band songs on here and GH songs on Rock Band?? We all know everybody plays both GH and Rock Band so y do they constantly put the same songs on both?? Thats just one less diferent song on each..

Am I the only one who thinks this list is horrid? "2 minutes to midnight" for iron maiden, "sweating bullets" megadeath, "spirit of the radio" Rush? Dont get me wrong there are a lot of good bands here its just there are a lot better songs they could have picked. I really wish they had "freewill" or "limelight" for Rush, i could wish all day but the set list is still missing some good tracks/ artists

I don't see why Rockband fanboys come here and bash Guitar Hero, I love both games but there's no way that Rockband is better unless you only focus on the point that it has more DLC, GH has a more fun drum set to play (I know some people think it's too hard, well guess what, try playing a real drumset) plus the 2 kick pedals make the game 100 times more fun, the open string on the bass makes playing bass fun instead of falling asleep like I do while playing rockband, I love playing rockband, don't get me wrong, it's just not better, or at least not far better to the point where people should say that guitar hero sucks

Plus I would buy GH5 if comedown by bush was the only song on the disc...one of the greatest songs ever

If you buy Guitar Hero 5, will you be able to download songs from World Tour? Or do you have to buy both games to get all of the songs?

  • lukas1051

    Posted Aug 16, 2009 2:52 am GMT

Indie? Greeeeaaaat... I don't know why Activison cannot understand that Bullet For My Valentine is more fun to play than Blur, that most people would rather drum to Slipknot than Vampire Weekend. Modern hard rock, nu-metal and metalcore are by far the most popular genres of rock, and certainly one of the most fun to play, I see none on here.

The whole GH v RB arguement is stupid anyway. They are the same games, just pick which one has your favourite songs and play it. For me I'm really looking forward to playing Plug in Baby, one of the best riffs around

It just shows that as soon as Harmonix left for MTV Games (best choice I believe), Activision has completely ruined the GH Series for all of us. Stick with Harmonix and Rock Band games I'd say!

I think alot of people are missing the most truly awesome song on this whole list. SULTANS OF SWING! Anybody who's anybody in the guitar world knows that is one of the best guitar songs ever and I am absolutely floored to be able to play it again, even if it is on a video game. Bass players beware, Sultans is ridiculously boring for you.

Looks like some good songs, Definitely some great artists QotSA, Sublime, Nirvana (Lithium FTW), The White Stripes, Arctic Monkeys, etc . Would have preferred a few different song choices for the artists on there. Also would have preferred the Jimi Hendrix version of "All Along the Watchtower".
