What we heard: Deus Ex and Thief creator Warren Spector shocked many in 2007, when Disney Interactive Studios announced that it had purchased the famed game designer's Junction Point Studios. One year later, Spector gave the first real clue as to his current work, saying that he was collaborating with Disney Feature Animation and Pixar. And in late 2008, an online report surfaced that the game in question may be titled "Epic Mickey."

Today, more evidence has surfaced suggesting that Spector's current project is indeed titled Epic Mickey, as well as what may be concept art for the in-development game. The first of a pair of online resumes unearthed by data-mining blog Superannuation shows what appears to be concept art depicting a postapocalyptic, steampunk-esque Magic Kingdom.

The artist, whose LinkedIn profile indicates he previously served as a concept designer at Junction Point Studios, posted six concept shots in all. Notably, one shot, titled by the artist "goofy zombie," depicts the notoriously addled sentient canine as a cyborg of sorts, with sprocket-spun joints, a wooden leg haphazardly tied onto his femur, a missing arm, and a hollow eye socket.

A second shot, which the artist titled "sea transport," shows what appears to be the Disney Land's iconic Epcot Center and Mickey's water tower affixed to the back of the whale that swallows Pinocchio and his father. Yet one more shot, bearing the moniker "castle side," shows what appears to be Cinderella's Castle precariously perched atop a reaching pillar of rock, high above an industrialized wasteland.

According to a second resume dug up by Superannuation, Epic Mickey will, at the least, be coming to the Wii. Also a concept artist, the developer started at Junction Point Studios in June 2009, where he has been busy "designing and painting concept/inspirational artwork" and "painting 'boxouts' for locations"

The official story:Disney Interactive Studios had not responded to requests for comment on the resumes as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Looks not bogus.

@hoodstock and jasonanton.... I do not care about mickey, but if is a good adventure, or even better what this could be a great RPG.. with what so far looks an amazing art.. is one that I`ll get. And I`m happy I have 2 system, the changes of it coming to either the wii or the ps3 may means that if good I`ll have it..

wtf? DARK disney game featuring Mickey?
.........if its T or M rated and really fun, i might actually get it.
if its Kingdom Hearts 3.........'starts thinking of way to save or make money.'

I wonder what the target audience for this is. From the sound of it, this might be too mature for the average Mickey Mouse fan. Still, I'm intrigued.

Looks epic. If this game turns out to be real, I'm gonna flip.
Who knows, maybe this might even be concept art for Kingdom Hearts 3, but I doubt it.

I guess it sounds neat but don't get who would be the intended market for this game. 35 year old Mickey Mouse fans?

I'd rather have Disney cranking out this Burton-esque gothic industrial style than have another Hannah Montanah or High School Musical game, blegh...

@dentui I understand what u'r saying those games are more or less spin offs of the story to fill in some gaps. Plus like most companies a good way to make money off an already succcesful product. Quare did kick out the KH chain of memorys to the PS2 thou with the same battle system in the DS and crapy grapics. But its still more or less is for the money. I came accross a bit of info on Kingdom hearts on wikipedia a few days ago that all the games they have planned and so forth are not the only ones the plan on making. I don't know man but heres what he said:
"Tetsuya Nomura has said that the three most recent titles in the series (KH) are not the final ones and will have a connection to a future but currently unannounced game" Which makes me think they will kick out another one this could be it or something entirely different. This artical only states that it will at least be coming to the Wii it does not say it wont come to another console.

    @Briantb_2008
That is what I had in mind when they started talking about Mickey.
But here is a question, Not bashing on any DS people but. Why would Quare release good games of Kingdom Hearts to the DS? They started out with the PS2 and yet they are making very interesting games for the DS. I don't think those who had a PS2 would downgrade to a hand held unless it was for the PSP.

There are also rumors that this is based on a french mickey mouse cartoon called "runaway brain" i've seen still shots of that one and it's damn creepy.

Love the second image, the sea transport, wouldn't mind having that hanging on my wall. Have to wonder though, if this is anything more than some cool random concept art, and there is probably no actual post-apocalyptic Disney-game being actively worked on, that just sounds a little too good to be true. But I hope I'm wrong

What I would like to know is the impact children and other people will have when they see such a game with Mickey? The game does look epic...but for some reason i can't picture a game play with Mickey on such a post apocalyptic world. If it were Kingdom Hearts it would be understandable, but centered entirely on the Disney Universe alone, hmm...I'm looking forward to this.

The only good disney game out right now is kingdom hearts, but split second looks pretty good. A burnout clone yes, but still pretty good.

  • kbaily

    Posted Jul 30, 2009 4:05 am GMT

Still I think Kingdom Hearts proved they could go into darker, more serious territory with the Disney characters and make it work, so it will be interesting to see where this goes.

    Awesome.

Castle of Illusion was and still is one of the best Megadrive/Genesis games ever made. Always loved Mickey games on that system. I hope they do a fantastic update of sorts.

  • Sepewrath

    Posted Jul 29, 2009 11:12 pm GMT

I'm surprised that Disney would allow these kind of depictions of thier characters, maybe thier learned to lighten up these days. I'm curious to see how this one turns out.

    Posted Jul 29, 2009 11:09 pm GMT

    What the..................?

Well, the screenshots are very interesting. They seem to... *puts on dictionary/thesaurus/high IQ hat* ...show an eerie, other-worldly, slightly surreal atmosphere with a somewhat grotesque but familiar tone because of the use of known Disney characters and locations. *Takes hat off* This really reminds me of American McGee's Alice.
I just hope that the entire game is just as imaginative.

  • CobaltJewel1

    Posted Jul 29, 2009 10:33 pm GMT

To be honest, if this is released, then I doubt the game is actually in production. I may be wrong, but these sorts of things are usually under strict non-disclosure agreements until the game is either made or officially canceled. It's a shame, because it seems like an interesting world, but considering how little Disney let Square Enix mess with their characters in Kingdom Hearts (thinking mainly of the second game, where it just all started being recycled), I find it doubtful that they would allow this approach to be taken with their IP. Just a thought.

I for one support this concept art and idea. Finally something that looks amazingly awesome from Disney that doesn't have Square-Enix in it. I hope the game is done right and hope to see more soon.
