Dead Space movie announced, trilogy revealed?

DJ Caruso on board to direct live-action version of Electronic Arts' survival horror/sci-fi crossover; Variety reports "second and third" games in the works.

Electronic Arts' Visceral Games made headlines last week for both losing two top executives and showing off its wares at Comic-con 2009 in San Diego. Today, the studio formerly known as EA Redwood Shores was in the news again, with Variety revealing a live-action film based on Dead Space is in the works.

The Hollywood trade reported that EA has partnered with Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey, the cofounders and heads of the Temple Hill production company. The outfit is also behind the forthcoming Gears of War movie, which is in development at Legendary Pictures and has director Len Wiseman (Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) attached. It was also involved with the first film based on the popular teen vampire Twilight novels and the forthcoming Nicholas Sparks adaptation, Dear John.

Dead Space, too, has a director on board--D.J. Caruso, who was at the helm of last year's critically panned action-thriller Eagle Eye. Prior to that dubious project, he directed 2007's better reviewed Disturbia and several episodes of the acclaimed TV series The Shield.

No release date or actor information has been revealed for the Dead Space film, which is just one of five EA game-based movies in development. Mass Effect, Dante's Inferno, Army of Two, and The Sims are also being brought to the big screen. Also notably, Dead Space was made into a straight-to-DVD and cable animated feature by Starz Media last year. Finally, the game's plot is reminiscent of several films, such as the horror-thrillers Alien (1979) and Event Horizon (1997).

Today's article also appeared to reveal the future of the Dead Space game series. According to Variety, EA "is working on the second and third installments" in the Dead Space series, raising the possibility of a trilogy. It was unclear if the two projects were the already announced Dead Space: Extraction (see below) or the hinted-at Dead Space 2. "The only Dead Space game that is announced and in development at this time is Dead Space: Extraction," was all an EA rep would say.

I really loved the game. I hope they make more for PC soon. Anyway, a dead space movie would definitely be bloody-based on the game. Lots of ripped parts and gore and disgusting guts splashing out of aliens would be all over the movie. But I won't like such movies. There is a difference between horror and disgust. Watch The Exorcist, thats true horror. Watch 'Living Death', thats disgust. I hope and wish that Dead Space would be of the former.

I think it would be cool to see how they make the aliens and the guns and the suits, but I would much rather KILL the aliens then WATCH them get killed lol

if they follow the alien movies in terms of knowing how to make something pretty damn great it will be fine.

@Excedra. I kind of agree. Fallout would not be stupid to make, it's just impossible, same as any RPG or game with branching storylines. Because of the fact that depending on what the gamer does, the story changes, especially a game with Fallout where this are so many possibilities, it's just not possible to make a movie out of it because of the sheer length and amount of possibilities. Dead Space is easier to do, because much of the game was recovering different things to fix the ship, there is enough that can be cut out to fit a 2-2.5 hour movie.

God no. Knowing the reputation of game-to-movie transitions, this will be butchered. I'd love to see it in a movie, the story was movie-worthy, but I really hope they don't screw this up. If they do a great job... it would be an intense movie.

@marshin7 I was shocked they would make such a bad game into a movie for crying out loud. its a joke, its going to be as bad as the doom was. Its such a cliche and bad developed story. The only thing I ever liked about the game was upgrading the suit and the perspective of that game was so incredibly frustrating to run a freaking straight line!
And I played 3/4 of the game and gave up. Its not worth it!

I'm sure that the people making this one have learned a lot by watching what audiences really want and need in a movie being translated from a video game. Especially all , or most , or the people who have commented here are the kind that support these movies. So the big studio don't want to screw this one up. If all else fails, we still have the vid-game, huh.

A lot of the people who say Dead Space sucks probably only played the demo if at all. I didn't like the demo at all, but I eventually rented it and loved the entire game.

This game was simply amazing, one of my favorites of last year... PLEASE don't ruin this. I also enjoyed the "anime's" storyline, but am so scared they are going to fly tangent like the RE movies and make stuff up.

this game was great it was actually dare i say better then RE1 in terms of suspense. i think its going to bring back the famous genre of survival horrors since RE abandoned it after resident evil 4

as opposed to some other game-movies that have recently been announced, this one actually makes sense.
    ...
even though one could argue that the game itself is cinematic enough to create a movie-like experience while pressing the video-game advantages: interaction and immersion.

Not all game based movies have to be cheaply produced (street fighter, Doom) Some producers and movie directors actually have the potential to make a decent and even GOOD movie based on games.

Infamous and Dead space movies are in my radar.

  • hipgangsta

    Posted Jul 29, 2009 1:50 pm PT

yeah yeah yeah, I get it. They wanna make as many similair movies to Quarintine, think about it, Record, Dead Space, Survelliance, all of them are knock-offs

    @ Petruvai
I dunno Dead space has a nice setup(as more horror than action film, kinda like Pitch Black ), even Bioshock can have one if done right(take power usage from push, have the story follow elements from the runner and perhaps total recall ) the main plot would be to get out the sub plots would be to save the little sisters tho you find out later you are merely "putting them to sleep gracefully" the other sub plot would be to destroy ryan whos gone mad.. The trouble is you have a bunch of half wits(people like me but with a degree or 2 and who know more grammar than I can chew out of a book) who cater thier skills to appeal to the masses. This means they dumb stuff down. And in doing that(water down the fiction/characters,ect) with watered down scripts makes for a train wreck in waiting.

Its like the fighter movies(or RE movies) of the last 2ish years Dead or alive and Chun lee they throw out the fiction and reinvent it which deadens its senses and puts it to sleep then they misconstrue horrible story's,plots, characters because the project is already comatose who cares if they make it into a full fledged zombie...

I don't know if a movie is a good idea. The ideas were never original enough to stand on their own, it was the playing of it that was fun. Also, an allstar cast would totally ruin this. If they pick relative unknowns that can actually act, then it might have a chance.
