Splinter Cell, Red Steel 2, new Ghost Recon delayed

Ubisoft pushes stealth action sequel and Wii first-person shooter/slasher to Q1 '10; I am Alive and next Tom Clancy title moved past March.

The ever-elusive Sam Fisher is at it again. Just when gamers thought the long-awaited Splinter Cell: Conviction had finally been nailed down for a November 17 launch, Ubisoft again delayed the oft-postponed revamp for the stealth action series. The PC and Xbox 360 title will now ship sometime during the first quarter of 2010.

Unfortunately, Sam Fisher wasn't the only one pulling a disappearing act. The Wii first-person shooter-slasher Red Steel 2 will now be joining it in the first quarter of next year--the last quarter of Ubisoft's fiscal year.

Possibly making room for those two titles, Ubisoft pushed another pair of games into its next fiscal year, which begins April 1, 2010. The next installment of the tactical shooter series Ghost Recon and the new intellectual property I Am Alive were previously expected in early 2010, but are now set for sometime in the publisher's fiscal 2010-2011 year, which ends March 31, 2011.

While gamers are just finding out about the Splinter Cell and Red Steel delays today, Ubisoft has apparently known about them for some time. In the quarterly financial report announcing the slips, the Paris-based publisher maintained its sales target for the second half of its fiscal year, saying the postponements had already been factored in to its previously issued revenue guidance.

Originally announced at Microsoft's X06 conference, Splinter Cell: Conviction initially had a 2007 release window before being pushed to early 2008, then further into that year, and most recently this November. Conviction is also currently available for pre-order on the PC, but has been touted as a 360 "console exclusive" by Microsoft ever since its appearance at the Electronic Entertainment Expo last month. (The PC logo is also absent from the game's official Web site.) GameSpot initially reported the game as a 360 exclusive and regrets the error.

I Am Alive is another repeat offender when it comes to Ubisoft delays. The game had been announced at E3 2008 with a spring 2009 release date, but it was pushed back as development switched from developer Darkworks to Ubisoft's Shanghai studio.

This is the first postponement for Red Steel 2 and the new Ghost Recon. The long-rumored follow-up to the Wii launch title and the still-untitled installment in the durable tactical shooter franchise were both announced in April.

    WHAT A LOAD OF BS SPLINTER CELL HAS ALWAYS BEEN ON THE PS2 AND PS3 SO WHY NOT THIS ONE DOESNT MATTER THOUGH CAUSE THE LAST ONE THEY BROUGHT OUT WAS TOTAL S H I T E SO PS3 USERS ARENT GOING TO MISS MUCH

    @Rudorlf

    every game in the splinter cell series bad or good has always been a PC/360 game, that ofcourse is not including double agent which sucked, bu was still released for ps3, so your theory of a "win-win" situation is completely BS

    @Rudolflf:

    1) SC Conviction has ALWAYS been right from the start a Microsoft exclusive (on consoles), which means no PS3 version will ever be released, never ever;
    2) It's a PC/X360 games, it's always been, I dunno if it will be a simultaneous release but it will definitely be released on PC.

    @ Pwnd56:

    Dunno about you and other PC/PS3 gamers (SC: C is no longer for PS3 [I say temporarily not available.], and many doubts of whether the game will be release on PC [Including me, I'm afraid.].), but IMHO, they release the game only on X360 for 2 very good reasons (Since the current development of this game is kinda risky, IMO).

    1) If SC: C on X360 suck or doesn't sell well (Which definitely NOT gonna happen.), Ubisoft won't lose a lot of money (Or possibly go bankrupt.), compared to releasing it for PC and PS3 too (To prevent us PC and PS3 gamers from wasting our money on the if-the-gameplay-suck game), for their failure.

    2) On the other hand, if SC: C on X360 rocks and sell very well, Ubisoft might happily consider porting it to both PC and PS3, and let us PC and PS3 gamers enjoy the game's great gameplay. Result? A win-win situation!!! XD

    I'm no fanboy, but if Splinter Cell: Conviction is a success, I'm sure they definitely will port it to both PC and PS3 (They should have a MILLION very good reasons if they want to keep SC: C exclusively for X360 only, when the game sell really well.).

    I'm not surprised. Sure they announced the game this year to win the E3. Perhaps there will be something new released for x360 next year and they wanted the game to be on it.
    Whatever, only disappointments.

    No I am not finished yet, Ubi, you should know so much better than to constantly change release dates, because it has been 4 years since we have played Double Agent, time is up, 4 years of waiting is just way too long. I don't think that after this I will be waiting for another game by you, just release it already.I see what you do you make us wait for 4 years now then don't even tell us that for 90% of those years you weren't even making that game any way then at E3, you feel that people were losing interest in this game, so you made some gameplay for e3, but never did any thing else. So now you will probably keep delaying it, so it won't be out until like 2015. That's low, Ubisoft, just low...

    Man, This is the fifth time they have delayed Splinter-Cell Conviction, come on guys seriously, I saw a tremendous improvment of this game at E3, and I really don't see how it needed more work to be done. Just release it now and end our misery!!! The thing is about this game is that they will never stop delaying it!

    dang right, i feel for u. I wish xbox would just let multisystem games stay multisystem (by that i mean this only, of course) so that ps3 owners can enjoy it instead of having to swallow their pride or not even want to play it. btw, i am not a fanboy, i just wish this was on my fav. system.so xbox guys, good for u, i am not fighting or being sad. in fact, i happy that this will come out on pc, by then i will have an awesome gaming rig!!!

    Oh the irony, oh the ecstasy, actually no, not really no, delay... delay... delay... you give us a taste of the revamp and then delay... how many of us have been waiting since finishing DA for the next installment... oh well.. there's always the fact you could still own the reliable and made copies of the epitome of the series Chaos Theory... In reality, there's more to like then waiting around for SC:C

    One of the best games I've ever played online was Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, and I only played it on a PS2. The oXbox had more weapons, more levels, way better graphics, etc. and I almost bought an Xbox 360 this generation with the idea that I could still play the Xbox's Chaos Theory.

    I really wish this came out on the PS3, because the multiplayer was so innovative! No other game has given me goose bumps and a feeling of urgency *every time I play it.*

    If this really is to DRM I implore all of the decent hard working people, who actually pay for the games they play, (be it new or second hand) to kick the DS out of the hands of anyone who has an R4 card. That way at least they have to shell out another £100 to pay for a new one. If they tell you to pay for it tell 'em the letter to FACT (or your countries governing body of copyright theft) is in the mail. I despise piracy it only puts decent people out of work. Also before the whining commences. The developers aren't the only people who put a game together and the cost is proportional to the item. Except for COD MW 2. You can complain to that prick Kotick for that!

  • wesleyson21

    Posted Jul 28, 2009 12:23 pm PT

    To everybody whining about the delay, it isn't a publicity stunt. Ubisoft has created a new form of DRM that will be ready at the end of the year, because of high rates of piracy, especially on the DS.

    Man, just when I was getting really excited about Red Steel 2, it gets delayed. I think it looks really good, cel-shaded is really the best graphic style for the Wii; if they try to make games look realistic, they just end up looking like crap. Anyway, that's the one I'm most disappointed about. Splinter Cell looks kinda cool though, I've never played any of them, but maybe I'll play some other Splinter Cell games to see how I like them.

  • Dynamo11

    Posted Jul 28, 2009 10:45 am PT

    I would prefer Splinter Cell over ANY new game coming from UbiSoft (except BiA4)
    Then again I'm usually forgiving for delayed games so it better be worth the extra stuff they need the time for!

    Wow, Ubisoft has some really strange and annoying business practices. Let's release the next Splinter Cell until AFTER another Assassin's Creed game. So, 2 AC games in 2 years and 2 Splinter Cell games in 4 years. Good job showing blatant favoritism guys, well done.
