Battlefield 1943 recruits 600,000

EA claims Dice's multiplayer-only WWII shooter secured day-one, week-one sales records worldwide on Xbox Live, North America on PSN.

By many accounts, EA Dice delivered on its multiplayer-only installment in the burgeoning Battlefield franchise two weeks ago, attracting a strong critical reception for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 downloadable game. However, Battlefield 1943's launch was marred by significant instability, especially on Microsoft's console, as EA scrambled to add additional play servers after drastically underestimating gamers' enthusiasm for the online title.

Today, EA put that enthusiasm into perspective, announcing that Battlefield 1943 had sold more than 600,000 copies across the Xbox 360 and PS3 editions of the game since its July 8 launch. That sales tally, the publisher notes, secures the title for "fastest selling day one and week one download-only game" worldwide on Xbox Live and in North America for the PSN. Battlefield 1943 is available for $15 (MSP1,200).

Upon its initial offering, Battlefield 1943 featured three maps, where 24 combatants could engage on land, air, and sea. EA Dice offered a fourth map--the air-combat-heavy Coral Sea--on the condition that the player community achieve a total of 43 million kills. This feat was accomplished on Xbox Live five days after launch, with the PSN milestone secured on day eight.

A PC edition of Battlefield 1943 is expected in September. For more information, check out GameSpot's previous coverage of Battlefield 1943.

Really awesome game i agree...however, it would've been great if there were more classes to choose from and like others are saying; some more map packs. More classes would = more weapon variety, but for what its worth 9.99 (without demo & themes on PSN) i love it and is definitely a must have. I'll play this until modern warfare2 comes out.

It is a awesome game, though a Expansion pack would be a big plus. A Kokoda trail map would be good with sas soldiers and instead of jeeps for that particular map, have motorcycles with a side car that has a mounted machine gun included.

Haven't downloaded it yet. Will be getting this and Marvel -vs Capcom 2 very soon.

I'm shocked that EA didn't expect these sales. I'm sure they were only expecting 50K-100K initially. This game will easily hit a million is sales before the holidays. I'm not surprised about the lag, as they are using EA's server to host the game and not Microsoft's.

Great game, but are they raising the player cap anytime soon? 24 player cap really is a bit low, the game is lacking epic proportions

I'm happy you can't control carriers. It was bad enough in BF1942 when some douche would sail the carrier off the map. I can only image how bad it would be with the 360 and PS3 community.

  • VGA_assassin

    Posted Jul 23, 2009 5:31 pm GMT

Good for them. Hopefully they make money, and put some back into making new maps.

I really wish you could drive the carriers like in 1942. I had so much fun smashing them into the other teams carrier...

Might pick this up for PC once it's out in September.

Depends on how good Champions Online beta is. If I end up picking that up, it will last me until Dragon Age easily. Between the two that'll be a couple more months before I even look at 1943 again.

no guests, and no split screen. its a $15 game so you dont get a lot of features but it is a lot of fun.

i think thats pretty cool how they made an utlimate achievment to get people to keep playing the game by 43 mil kills and u unlock a new map..they should just do that for now on instead of paying like $10 for DLC

i play this game more than cod 4 and world at war, 1200 ms points well spent, but i have to agree they do need another game type and maybe another 2 maps, atleast within the next two months

They need to fix voice chat asap and add a few more maps. Aside from that it's a killer game.

Oh yes, let's all brag about how 360 won the race when there are overall more players and they got to play it a day ahead of PS...It wasn't even a race, it was just an accomplishment.

Instead of just adding new maps, they should make an expansion with lots of new features and sell it for 500-800 MS points. They'd make a killing

its still faulted though, they really need to sort out the voice chat problems, it ruins playing it with friends, when they cut out 5 minutes in, or you can only hear them but they can't hear you etc. Apart from that its a brilliant game.
