Mass Effect comic arrives Jan. 6

BioWare senior writer Mac Walters working with Dark Horse Comics on sequential art edition of sci-fi RPG; story fills in gap between original and upcoming sequel.

BioWare's Mass Effect has been widely praised for its reaching story, garnering praise enough for ex-Marvel Comics CEO Avi Arad to option the rights to adapt the game into a film last year. As it would turn out, Mass Effect will also be receiving the comics treatment proper. BioWare parent, Electronic Arts, today announced today the game will be elaborated with a new comic series, with the first issue hitting newsstands on January 6.

In collaboration with Dark Horse Comics, BioWare will create the comic Mass Effect: Redemption, which will bridge the storyline from the end of Mass Effect to the beginning of the upcoming sequel, Mass Effect 2. The first installment of the four-part comic series promises to introduce unseen locations, enemies, and aliens.

The story will be written by BioWare's lead writer Mac Walters, the scriptwriter behind the second game. Mass Effect: Redemption will be scripted by John Jackson Miller, the writer behind the Knights of the Old Republic comic series, and will be drawn by Omar Francia, who has worked on several issues of Star Wars: Legacy. Dark Horse Comics is the publisher for Star Wars both series. Walters and Francia will be at Comic-Con International 2009 in San Diego on July 24 to sign Mass Effect cards.

Dark Horse Comics has adapted previous series into comics, such as Aliens, Star Wars, and Serenity. Mass Effect 2 is expected to arrive during EA's current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2010. For more information on the upcoming game, refer to GameSpot's past coverage and the E3 stage demo video below.

It's gunna be confusing with a comic hitting just before the second game, and the way you can carry over past game changing desicions from the first game over to the second, and how/if that will effect the second games roster at all.

Gunna be hard to figure out what's actually going on.

If theres any franchise that could transition well from games to movies, it would be Mass Effect. I have no doubt that it would happen eventually. Though, if Boll has even the slightest connection to it, I might have to pass.

indeed a movie might not be far away, comics are fine etc only going to boost mass effects already cult following status, to maybe a more mainstream market i not sure where that leads, but it cant be a bad thing as long as its done well, and keeps with in the mass effect persona, and yes been waiting for what feels like 3 years for mass effect 2,screw you santa my christmas starts in january! woooooooo! Mass Effect is the best Action-RPG game ever released.

I'm very excited for Mass Effect 2.

Mass Effect has such an amazing storyline and plot. The novel for Mass Effect really was a great book that kept you interested. I have very high hopes for this comic book.

@PabloEscobar20 ; then you are slow. I did 100% of the game with all the side quests and collected all the tags and minerals and whatever. It only took 38 hours.
That includes the hour I ran around like a sheep looking for the last keeper.

Do you want to do a renegade action, jump to page 12. To do the paragon thing, jump straight to page 15.

Being a huge ME fan I am looking forward to this.
I guess it's most likely going to be a "separate" bridge between the ME1 and ME2 compared to the second book Mass Effect Ascension which came out last year.

If the comic miniseries make a good link between the end of ME1 and the Prelude to ME2, then I'm up for it. Bioware rules! Let's hope EA does a good of a job with the sequel as Microsoft GS did with the first one.

I am really looking forward to this. I am a huge ME fan. Those two are right, if you haven't read the books, you're missing out on some good storyline. I didn't see too much dialog, which is one thing I really enjoyed about the first one. However, I'm sure it's there. Also didn't see any different types of Commander Shepard other than John. So I really hope they kept that feature. Thank you Ray, Greg, and Drew for an awesome story! Now I wish I had an I-phone...

@Captain_Tom : Dude, the world evolves around money, the software company's have their production costs to cover, i 4 1 don' blame them. I will like to see in the future games that come out 4 20~30 euros/dollars and then give me the opportunity to enlarge my experience with that particular game with 5~15 euros/dollars.

  • Captain_Tom

    Posted Jul 21, 2009 8:42 pm PT

Screw that. How about you put that in the game instead of trying to make us pay as many times as possible for the new story? I really hope Bioware don't forget that they are so loved and respected because they make a great game before they expect some profit. We really don't need another profiteering EA.

Can't wait, but would rather have had it today. ~grin~ The comic book idea isn't very exciting as I prefer novels and a DLC would have been a great way to bring us into Mass Effect 2. Oh well, will just have to keep playing the first one while I wait.
