BattleForge dealing out Renegade Edition August 25

On May 26, the online card game BattleForge become free-to-play and instituted a microtransaction system, placing most of its trading cards on its in-game store. Today, publisher Electronic Arts announced that the real-time strategy/card-battle hybrid will now add more than 60 new premium cards under its upcoming Renegade Edition, due out August 25.

The new edition will add "legendary units and monumental buildings" from the Southern Wastes region of Nyn, available through new Renegade Booster Packs ($2.50 each) at the store. The update will also introduce the Bandits and Stonekin factions, along with dual orb cards and special affinities that will enhance combat and strategy. The Renegade Edition is the second major card release in the game, preceded by the 200-card Twilight Edition that came with the game's launch in March.

Although the Renegade Edition won't be out for a month, players of the PC-exclusive game will be able to download the new single-player Oracle PVE scenario this week, which is another staggered release of the Renegade campaign's maps.     I bought this game when it was a 49.99 game. I played it and even went as far as to buy more battle forge points to build a great frost deck back when it came out. I didnt notice right away but they had charged me 2 dollars tax for every BF point purchase I had made. MInd you i bought this full game from EA website Download. No Tax at all. So i wrote them with a complaint and they said because they have a office in my state that is why they charged tax. Why no tax on the Download that was 49.99 but tax on BF points. That soured me on the game. So I stopped playing. Only later do i find out its now a free game. I will be alot more reserve when it comes to card/rts/TCG games and I assure you if any one of my buddies asks me about this game I will do my best to tell them to steer clear of the money grab this is.

    This game does still look promising, but it's looking more and more like a M:TG clone within an RTS. This is the mentality I forsee:

    "Must stay up to date! Must purchase all cards! Must be a God!"

    So they replaced a stupidly planned out pay-to-play service with an equally stupid micro-pay service? Fail.

    This game should be free to play after the initial purchase. Had they taken that approach, maybe it would have sold better from the get go.
