After the success of premium-priced Guitar Hero bundles, Activision is preparing a holiday slate chock-full of games with peripherals packed in. In addition to Guitar Hero 5, the publisher has big-ticket bundles for Tony Hawk Ride, Band Hero, and DJ Hero.

While the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may not lend itself to the bundled controller business model, Activision and developer Infinity Ward are preparing the next best thing: an over-the-top limited-edition release. As revealed this week by an Infinity Ward YouTube video, Modern Warfare 2 will come in three different packages, the most extravagant of which--the Prestige Edition--will feature working night-vision goggles.

The video, hosted by Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling, lays out the content of the regular Modern Warfare 2 release, the Hardened Edition, and the Prestige Edition. The Hardened Edition will come packed in a metallic case with an art book featuring concept sketches and other details from the game's development. It also includes a downloadable code for the original Call of Duty on PC, Xbox 360, or PlayStation 3. Though the Prestige Edition remains unpriced, Bowling's Twitter page lists the Hardened Edition as selling for $80.

The Prestige Edition will come with the special Hardened edition of the game, the Modern Warfare 2-branded goggles, and a sculpted head to display the pack-in when not in use. North American retailers like GameStop, Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Amazon.com are currently accepting preorders for the regular and Hardened editions of Modern Warfare 2 but have yet to list the Prestige Edition.

[UPDATE]: In another post on his Twitter,Bowling revealed the suggested retail price of the Prestige Edition package will be $149. Additionally, he specified that the console editions of the original Call of Duty will include the game's full multiplayer features.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is set for a November 10 debut. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I totally agree but I think you should still give him a shot at explaining himself. I mean he did do the extremely hard math to discover the goggles are $70 compared to the $125 you would spend on the cheapest NVG I could find on a quick search on google. I mean the price difference is $55 (not including tax + s&h), so that's almost the price of the game.

Now I enjoy making fun of idiots like this but I think it might be easier to call him a moron. I've already wasted enough of my own time typing this up.

thos NVGs look cool . . i don't know about you people . . but $70-$80 for a NVG is nothing to be complained about . .

    1aaron456 . . i really had fun laughing at you dumba** . . first of all . . 70 bucks on a NVG goggles is a great bargain . . second . . why would the police confiscate it ? ?? it's from a promotional event . .that's publicly announced . . therefore the NVG is totally legal . . . duh

third . . these are not military grade NVG goggles . . if you really are well-informed (or go out once in a while away from your computer). . civilian NVGs are publicly sold . . fourth . . these are functional NVGs . . not mere display-purposes-sh*t . . so these goggles can be used for airsoft night games, creeping around at night wearing them . . or other perverted things you can come up with . .

. . but i go for the airsoft night games . . i don't need to creep around doing perveted things . . i have a good social life

So when you wear them and play MW2 is it like a wall hack or something, because, other than a gift, these come after the burnt piece of toast with Jesus' face on it, on my "Need to Buy" list

    So utterly pointless it's painful.
Yet, the consumer whore in me still wants a pair so badly. CURSE YOU RECESSION! I may not even get the hardened edition, because I don't think a tin foil case and a minuscule artbook is worth the extra 20 bucks...

but I wouldn't mind if I had the money. heh.

I've been looking on-line a bit and these things are basically a cooler looking version of a kids toy on the market. It's basically a cheap IR camera and Infra red lights. http://74.6.239.67/search/cache?ei=UTF-8&p=night+vision+goggles+toy&fr=yfp-t-701&u=arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080928-hands-on-with-some-surprising-80-night-vision-goggles.html&w=%22night+vision%22+nightvision+goggles+toy+toying+toys&d=UetRihlMTVyr&icp=1&.intl=us

here's a link to a review of what is basically the same thing, just a less cool looking version.

If any of you are thinking about buying these then your the biggest moron in this blog. Infinity Ward and Activision are just trying to scam ppl into paying more money. Everyone is saying that there 150 dollar goggles. Are you guys stupid the game cost 60 bucks so the goggles are only 90 bucks but wait. the hardened edition is 80 bucks so the goggles are only 70 bucks cuz the hardened edition comes with a metal case and a book. wooot. jk. but how dumb are u guys. 70 dollar goggles am i the only 1 that knows that these are sht u should realize that unles ur a moron. its pointless. and when you get in trouble blame it on infinity ward and also the police will take ur goggles. i know i bought some before and got introuble and they took them from me. so ur giving away 70 buck i hope ur happy. stupid inifinity ward and activision. they are so good at scamming all u stupid morons.

uh, these are definitely NOT military grade, trys to look like a PVS-7 but is way too big. Probably 2nd Gen 25mm instead of the 18mm Gen-3 stuff. Note the battery pack behind the head...

    No PC Edition?
WHY? WHY? Come on Activision/Infinity, how can you let the PC gamers (true FPS players) down? We are one of the largest gamers on the PC...you're letting us down, plus you're leaving money on the table!

So you say these NVG is going to reach 50 ft in tree different colours, I wanna know where you heard this, because really.. I doubt it. anyway, I might get this if it comes out in Europe (more specific Norway). regarding price, you pay around the same price for a guitar hero bundle. the goggles looks waaay big though, I might sell them if it's complete sh*t, or keep them like a prop for my bedroom.

Seriously, who thinks up this crap! A kick ass mouse pad with a MW2 image on it would have been a great idea. For a prestige edition, a custom (and quality) mouse along with the pad would have been a far better idea. If the goggles are not available for PC then Infinity Ward & Activision should consider that. PC games are more into customizing their rigs/setup. A mouse and mouse pad are part of the PC gamers gear. With a MW2 mouse and pad the game would be visible even when its not being played, plus it provides something that has a true use. They should put me on the payroll for such good ideas.

the goggles will probably have the same capabilities as the cyclops nvg toy they have out in stores. its about 100 bucks. the goggles dont start getting good until about 300, but the nice ones (the ones these are probable modeled after) are 1200 and up. easy. i bet they will still be a good conversation piece none the less.

    night vision goggles?
i mean yeah its awesome and everything but what is the point, how often do we find ourselves in a pitch black warzone and need to see, anyone who gets the prestige pack will probly say "cool, night vision" then use the goggles twice then forget about them

Its a gimmik, pure and simple...an extremly awesome gimmik....an extremly awesome gimmik that im probly gonna get so ill be prepared when the zombies come

yeah the goggles are gonna be POS. @specter1890 I didn't know they let little kids in the military with airsoft guns lol. If you were in the military you wouldn't say military you'd say marines or navy etc. You'd know they dont have NVG(night vision goggles) on rifles, they have NVSs(night vision scopes). And what kind of M16 were you issued(bet you don't know)?

too bad I use real NVGs and a Peq 15 on my m16. Being in the real military has its perks but its nice playin video games where you get way better gear haha

  • sc-jager

    Posted Aug 2, 2009 2:46 pm PT

@ Cowlick a good pair of NVGs cost nothing close to $30 lol good pair of NVG cost hundreds even thousands of dollars. sure you can get a POS (like the preorder goggles will probably be) for cheap but why waste your money on garbage.

  • bassbomber20

    Posted Aug 2, 2009 12:49 pm PT

There is NO PRESTIGE EDITION for the PC. So Do NOT get excited about it... PC gamers are once again not being given the same kinds of opportunities that their console counterparts are being given. So far neither Infinity Ward nor publisher Activision has commented on the reason behind this decision, despite comments from people on the Infinity Ward message boards asking for info.

I think I'll have to pass on the Prestige Edition and the Hardend edition. I already own a great pair of NVG's, so I'd just be throwing away money on the prestige edition; and I feel like the hardend edition is overpriced by about 10 bucks. Theres a ton of great games coming out this fall also, so I gotta spend my money wisely. Curse that devil clown Ronald McDonald and his low pay.

I think it is totally worth it, but I have always wanted NVG's. The price is a little steep but if you have the cash why not, as a bonus you can say "I have night Vision Goggles" how many people can say that and not be full of s#!t. Pre-ordered the day they announced it was actually happening.
