What we heard: Over the weekend, Hollywood trade Variety reported that Ryan Reynolds (Van Wilder, The Amityville Horror) had landed the lead role in Warner Bros. Pictures' film based on DC Comics' Green Lantern franchise. The role represents Reynolds' return to the genre, as the actor portrayed Deadpool in the critically lambasted X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Reynolds' attachment to the Green Lantern film appears not to be the only development to surface regarding the production. VentureBeat reports today that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has tapped Foundation 9 studio Double Helix for a game tie-in to launch alongside the film in June 2011. According to the site, Double Helix is crafting the game for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

According to VentureBeat's sources, the game tie-in has been on the table for more than a year. However, development on the project only just recently gained steam. Notably, Double Helix is no stranger to crafting film tie-ins, as it is currently wrapping development on the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, PlayStation 2, and PSP versions of EA's GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra, which is due August 4.

Double Helix is also at work on Square Enix's Front Mission Evolved, a mech-based third-person shooter announced during this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Square Enix has not yet revealed when that game is expected to arrive for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.

The official story: WBIE declined to comment on VentureBeat's report. Foundation 9 had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: It seems to go without saying that WBIE would be keen on delivering a game tie-in with the Green Lantern film. Combine that with VentureBeat's respectable track record, and this one is looking not bogus.

    Justice League Heroes & MK vs DC were fun attempts at using Green Lantern powers in a video game. They are not perfect but hammers, walls, fists, saws, etc. can all be fun if done right. I have hopes this game will at least capture a small bit of what it would feel like to have a power ring. We shall see.

    Hal Jordan was the first Green Lantern of the Silver Age and has been the main Green Lantern in the ongoing comic book for most of the last 50 years. John Stewart was a back up green lantern that came years later. Most younger people know John Stewart from the Justice League cartoon that ran for 5 years and ended a few years ago. I think it would be great to see John, Guy and Kyle but you really have to start with Hal Jordan before you bring in the others.. even if you are a fan of the cartoon.

    I agree with 8smokes. This game will most likely be a bit disappointing for most fans just because Green Lantern can do things like pick up whole buildings if he wants to. But most likely that kind of thing is going to be unavailable to players. Most likely you're gonna get the ability to have a GL hammer, a giant fist, and some kind of beam to shoot. The end. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was more disappointing and they made the game really linear.

    The Green Lantern has endless possibilities while comtrolling his ring. How is a game going to pull this off? In short, they're not. A game focussing around Green Lantern could only function by limiting his powers and establishing a system where different moves GL can do with his ring are unlocked either by XP base, skill base, or level base to name a few. All in all, the player won't really feel like he is controlling the all powerful GL, and feel like the game is holding back on them.

    I don't really see how you would pull this sort of game off. There's no sort of control possible on any console at the moment for something like the green lantern.

    Well John is not as significant as Hal or Kyle. He is more like Guy Gardner. John had some great and tragic moments. But Hal destroyed OA and wiped out the Green Lanters, became Parallax in the process and changed the DC continuity during Zero Hour only to sacrifice himself absorbing the Sun Eater and being revived as the Spectre, before realizing the Parallax was a Parasyte that used Hal as a host and by defeating it, he returns as the greatest Green Lantern.

    Not one of the other Green Lanters, not even Kyle is as cool and great as Hal.

    But I doubt the movie will leave up to the comics.

    @ Heazie You are entitled to your opinion, but so am I. I think that Homecoming is an average game that lowers the bar of the series.

    Instead of moving the franchise further, they took almost a step back. I don't blame them for trying. I blame Konami.

    I am glad you enjoyed the game. I wish I could say the same thing. But I just expected something else and they didn't reach my expectations.

    Surely you can't blame me for not liking the game and therefore the developers.

    the movie i have high hopes for comic book movies are getting better and better. (crossing my fingures that the movie leads into a blackest night tie in)

    Prediction: this game will get a 6.0. Amazingly, it will sell 1-2 million copies. Does anyone think that my prediction is that far fetched? It's sad really.

    It won't happen, but god do I ever want to see Kilowag in this movie.
    On topic, this game is more than likely going to be awful, mediocre at best. Though I would love to finally have a GL game.

    Alan Scott doesn't count as a Corps Lantern though so the 1st human Green Lantern is the one & only Hal Jordan....I'm so glad they picked Hal & not John

    The original Lantern would be either Alan Scott or Hal Jordan, certainly not Kyle Rainer. I hope for Hal. Kyle is great, but Hal had a great comeback and is without any doubt the most interesting of the Lanterns.

    Great! Another game ruined by Double Helix. As far as I am concerned, those guys are some of the most average developers ever. Can't forgive them how they've ruined Silent Hill. But than again, it looks like a video game based on a movie. No high expectations, means, they are finally back in their own league.

    Good to know, they are not working on a new SH. Because Homecoming was garbage. IMO

    Yes, over the past few years, comic book movies have truly delivered. Every time. The whole Avengers storyline is very exciting right now, with Captain America, Thor, Iron Man 2, Nick Fury, and The Avengers. And I can't wait to see what Chris Nolan and his writers come up with for the next Batman movie.

    I'm a "cup half full" kinda guy - so I hold out hope for an excellent movie and a decent game tie-in. It's a tough ask though - Green Lantern means a great deal to a lot of people and the franchise has been messed up before now.

    Big and Bulky? From what I remember superman ran around in spandex and underwear. Wonder Woman wore a miniskirt. The flash work a red diver's suit. I only remember a few heroes who wore big bulky costumes, mainly only because they weren't superhuman and needed that little extra somethin to keep their arses alive.

    let's give it a chance before calling it a flop. I remember many topics calling Iron Man a flop a year before it came out. At least this film is getting a good budget with a good starting lead actor---so far so good.

    My only concern here is the casting. Reynolds made sense as Deadpool even if they screwed the character up, at least the casting was good. I don't see where he would make a good Hal Jordan though.

    Well I hope they make it a good movie like Iron Man was. Even though it is DC comics and Iron Man is Marvel. It shouldn't matter.

    I can only imagine what his costume is going to look like. Knowing DC movies, it's going to be big, bulky and made of rubber. My only fear is that the GL movie will trump bat nipples.

    Ryan seems to get all the role on the comic genre, like Blade and Wolverine now Green Lantern. The two he'd made suck. I doubt this will make any distinction. Now a game my hope of the GL project just went down the drain. I'm a big fan please make this worth the money you gonna spend on doing this! Or just donate it to some charity.

    First off I must say that GI Joe game looks awful. Secondly I don't have high hopes for a Lantern game because one movie games tend to not work out, especially those that are rushed out the gate like it sounds like this will be. Secondly GL like Superman will be a character that is probably tough to transition to videogames because of the nature of his power, his ring is limited basically by his imagination, doubt you could pull that off in a game, especially a movie game developed in a year.
