Battlefield 1943 bombarding XBLA, PSN next week

EA Dice's multiplayer-only downloadable shooter arrives on Xbox 360 July 8, PS3 a day later for $15; PC edition slated for September.

EA Dice has quite a stockpile of Battlefield games in its arsenal. Last week, the Swedish developer opened up with Battlefield Heroes, a free-to-play, microtransaction-supported online action game for the PC. Today, EA DICE prepared for its next report, announcing that Battlefield 1943 will be available through Xbox Live on July 8 and the PlayStation Network on July 9 for $15 (1,200 Microsoft points). A PC edition is expected in September.

Originally slated for release in June, Battlefield 1943 is a download-only, multiplayer-only first-person shooter. The game lets 24 combatants mix it up on land, air, and sea. Players can assume a number of different play styles as either the US Marines or the Imperial Japanese Navy, including a trench-warfare rifleman grunt, a heavy-armor tank commander, or a nimble fighter pilot.

Gamers will initially have access to three maps that were inspired by battlegrounds found in 2002's Battlefield 1942: Wake Island, Guadalcanal, and Iwo Jima. According to EA Dice, a fourth map--Coral Sea--will be unlocked as a part of a "worldwide community challenge," in which players must "work together to reach 43,000,000 kills" across the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game.

Looking beyond Battlefield 1943, EA Dice still has two more Battlefield shooters waiting in the wings. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is expected to ship out for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in early 2010, and EA has also confirmed that Battlefield 3 is also in development.

I don't really mind paying for maps if it is a good game, but I hope 1943's inevitable DLC maps are free. Can't wait!

As long as it Battlefield its ok with me. Yes th PC versions are better. You will see that when they finally have PC vs Console battles.

I loved the original BF1942 and expansion packs for the PC. I am looking forward to this but why oh why have they not made it a complete game? Battlefield Bad company is fantastic and to do it in the setting of WWII is awesome but why limit it to a multiplayer 4 map game? Go the whole distance and make it a full single player/multiplayer experience.... oh, hang on... this is EA. We'll buy this and then have the option to purchase extra maps 2 days after release for a ridiculous amount of money.

PC players must wait because 'they want to do it right' ?

Rubbish, heres is the real reason... A lot of PC gamers also own 1 of the 3 major consoles, most likely a 360 or PS3.
Release a anticipated game on the consoles first and you will net all those that are too impatiant to play the game... so they buy a copy for the console, and then later release a PC version thats suppose to been tweaked and made better, and you will find a lot of those that bought the console version will ALSO pick up a PC version.

If you release all three at the same time, those with a PC that can run it will buy the PC version over the console offerings... only because the PC traditionally has better multiplayer support and usually better communities develop.

The real reason is because the bean counters said so.

@altair3feb I am thinking before I judge. It shouldnt be labelled as a Battlefield game ... it has nothing to do with what the original series pioneered: Huge open game worlds with tons of vehicles and 64 player support. Its missing a huge critical factor ... large player support. You can have large worlds all you want but if theres only 24 people to populate them ... well thats boring.

mrklorox: It's good that they want to make it right, and I have load of other games if it rains all summer. But it's a bit sad that they are porting to the pc, and not from it.

firstly i do not think that ea would want to release another bf game right after bf: heroes on pc (pure speculation and i know they are not the same, '43 has destructible environment, etc, etc)...

frankly bfbc is the game i played online the most and i still play it every now and then, i definitely will be buying '43, which i have been waiting eagerly, on the 9th...

  • mrklorox

    Posted Jul 2, 2009 11:55 pm PT

Remember, no map packs or other DLC has been announced yet. But all that depends on how many people buy and play it anyway. If it is a success, you can pretty much guarantee more maps will come. Try the (supposedly quite large) trial/demo and if you like it, buy it.

@joshy294: DICE themselves said the wait is because they refuse to make a simple port and want to get the PC version right. Sounds like a good plan to me.

To the contrary of the argument for 64 players, I have to say this. Who gives a rip?! What, so now I can get a game in like 30 seconds and wait not at all and I want to trade that for triple the players, triple the wait and trip the odds of lag. Forget that. For those of you on the fence, we, Yes WE have been having a blast playing BFBC for the last year. That's right, every time I buy something new it ends up back to Bad Company. This will be no different.

That is great except consoles before PC makes me sad. Battlefield is good on consoles, but it's really really good on the PC. Maybe they didnt want to mess with their Battlefield: Heroes release? Who knows...either way, it's time for me to suck it up and shell out the $15 entry fee Cya on xbox live!

I hear stories about MW breaking all military shooter games records and what not. Do people really not know a lot about Battlefield 1942, BF2 ?? Getting this on PC. I tried some BF games on console and to be honest they are not the same as they are on PC.

Its a totally different feel and BF games are made to be played on PC. Hope DICE has some info on BF3 can't wait

BF:BC 2 is not coming out until the first half of 2010 (More than likely March 2010). That's more than enough time to play this until the new Bad Company comes out.

Let's hope they keep supporting it after release. Adding DL map packs in the future would make this title a worthy investment. Just playin four maps would get old after awhile.
