Grease dances onto Wii, DS

'50s-themed musical to be adapted by Paramount and 505 Games.

Earlier this year, Paramount Digital Entertainment promised to expand the "core casual gaming audience" by publishing several games based on three teenage coming-of-age films. Paramount's "Pretty in Pink" (1986), "Clueless" (1995), and "Mean Girls" (2004) were adapted for the PC and Nintendo DS to the presumable delight of those films' fans. Now, Paramount plans to adapt another one of its movies, diving back into the 1970s to bring Grease to the Nintendo DS and Wii.

Paramount announced today that it would collaborate with 505 Games to adapt the 1978 film into a party game for casual and family gamers. Players will sing and dance with Danny Zuko, Sandy Olsson, and the rest of the T-Birds and Pink Ladies. According to Paramount, the game will "take full advantage of Nintendo Wii's motion-sensing controls and microphone and the DS's touch screen." It's unclear if Paramount and 505 Games were referring to the Wii Speak peripheral or third-party microphones used by such rhythm games as Guitar Hero: World Tour and Rock Band.

This won't be Paramount's last film-to-game effort. The studio announced in February that it plans to release an XBLA-exclusive game based on gangster beat-'em-up "The Warriors", coming this July. The producer has yet to give a release date for the Grease adaptation.

    Since I do not personally like Grease, they should not make this game, nobody should want it and nobody should write about it. I am upset that someone is making something that does not personally interest me. How does this happen? Why doesn't everyone check with me before they do anything to see whether or not I would like it? Is that so much to ask? If I don't like something then it is obviously the worst thing that has ever been created in history and it should not be allowed to exist. The existence of things that I don't like - like Grease - are of inconvenience to me and are therefore worse than Hitler.

    I am going to write a letter to my congressman asking him to outlaw things that I don't like. I also don't like my congressman either so hopefully after doing what I want he will resign and have himself shot into space.

    That is all.

    angelGP32: I know exactly what you mean. Non-gamers aren't stupid at all, in fact they ask me what games are good on the system and not, like "is this mario game better than that" or "should i get wii play" or whatever. They can be just as enthusiastic about games as "core" gamers are, just playing different games.

    @Dlarrain: no all these shovelware games are not good. And I can see what I'm about to say already happening with people that I know who own Wii's. Heres the problem. The non gamer crowd is not going to go Gamefaqs.com or anywhere to read reviews, they are going to buy something based on what they like. When they get home and it's a pile of crap, then they now start to think differently about what they buy and once they buy enough terrible games, they just stop altogether. Again, these people don't actively look for reviews and probably don't know they even exist, like Grandma will go to GameSpot or something. I try to tell everybody that I know that has a Wii or is getting one to read reviews before they waste their money.

    To the people who'd rather be doing some mundane task than playing this game: rejoice -- the playing of this game, like gay marriage, is optional, not mandatory.

    Why people are saying that Wii doesn´t need this game, with more games is far better, if it not interesting for you just don´t take care, personally I don´t like too much the idea, but every year more and more games are being released to Wii, some like this, and some different, there are games for everyone, not only for young players.

    Grease? Really? They can't get new/modern movie-to-game transitions right, so what do they do? Instead of making better games, they make crappy games of movies from the 70's. I'll pass.

    I agree with the travman. There's no need to be paranoid about all games becoming shovelware or "casual". The chances of that happening are pretty much zero to none. There's main gamer crowd is always going to be there and developers are always going to make games for them. I find it hard to believe that a game like Grease could possibly outsell the biggest names in the video game industry (and your theory of this game possibly outselling Halo is way too unrealistic).

  • thetravman

    Posted Jul 3, 2009 9:30 am PT

    @maxsteel86

    Ps2 got so many shovelware also, and we're still getting loads of good games this generation. Personally, I don't worry about it because there are still many developers who are true to their work. Casual may be moving in because of what Nintendo is doing, but heck, it's not going to take over the whole gaming industry. I don't understand why alot of people feel paranoid about it.

  • maxsteel86

    Posted Jul 3, 2009 9:16 am PT

    @thetravman
    Just cos we're not obligated to buy it doesn't mean we cant complain about it. Maybe you dont realise but if crap like this sells better than good stuff like Halo or something, what type of games do you think developers will commit to making? Of course you wont be obligated to buy any of the lame stuff but here's the problem, what if ALL the games become just casual crap? Gonna still feel smug then cos you're not obligated to buy it?

  • mjc0961

    Posted Jul 3, 2009 1:07 am PT

    ... What.

    Really? Come on... Does the Wii really need more shovelware like this? Grease was a terrible movie anyway: what kind of ending was that?! Without spoiling, what she did at the end was completely pathetic.

    This may actually work, mainly because their are so many people in the age demographic when this movie was popular that picked up a Wii for it's novelty, that it may actually sell a few copies. I'm not interested, but their are some 40 - 50 year old Wii owners who will be grabbing this copy for sure.

    To all the people who are saying that the N is not to blame for these horrible games should pay attention.Microsoft and Sony all have FINAL say on what go out to the public.So either the N needs to wake up,or start firing people,because this is getting sad.GREASE????? If you want grease that badly ask guitar hero to make a musical soundtrack pack!!!!!!

  • jamiep319

    The reason that all these crap games keep showing up on the wii is because nintendo has no screening process for licensing. any developer can release any game on the wii, unlike with the 360 or ps3, which require approval from microsoft or sony.

  • angelGP32

    Posted Jul 2, 2009 8:27 am PT

    no, the fact that Nintendo allows the game to be licensed to be created for it's systems is a fail on NINTENDO, not the developer. Even the most die-hard Nintendo fan even has to be shaking their heads and thinking that it's starting to get ri-god-damn-diculous. You would have never seen this back in the SNES days. Bring that Nintendo back, this new Nintendo is just a smoltering pile of poop and garbage, if it wasn't for the non traditional gamers, they'd be chapter 11 already.
