Square Enix teaser revealed to be new Final Fantasy DS

Weekly Shonen Jump spoils publisher's announcement of Four Warriors of Light for Nintendo's handheld; turn-based RPG slated for Japan this fall.

With more than 100 hours left to be counted off on Square Enix's Japanese-language teaser site launched last week, the site continues to have new elements added to it. The original teaser page merely showed sketches of a village and the number "4," but the site now displays hand-drawn artwork of a young boy wielding a sword while atop a dragon, with a young girl also perched upon the airborne serpent's back.

Unfortunately for Square Enix, the placid pace at which it had hoped to reveal its latest game has been spoiled in a most perfunctory way. Today, scans of the most recent issue of Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump have surfaced online revealing the game to be Four Warriors of Light: Final Fantasy Gaiden for the DS. (Scans of the announcement were obtained by True Gaming and translated by GameSpot.)

According to Weekly Shonen Jump's blowout on the game, Four Warriors of Light is a turn-based role-playing game slated to arrive for the DS in Japan this fall. The game follows the travails of a 14-year-old boy who has been sent by a king to rescue a princess from a wicked witch, the Japanese magazine reports.

As for gameplay features, Four Warriors of Light lets players command a four-character squad of adventurers of various archetypes. Weekly Shonen Jump also notes that each character's appearance will change as players acquire and equip weapons and armor.

Weekly Shonen Jump did not indicate whether Four Warriors of Light would see release outside of Japan. Square Enix had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment as of press time.

It's nice that they are supporting the DS and making games other than just FF and all, but with the energy they spend on these smaller games they could be producing something more impressive for consoles.

So far they've given the 360 FFXI Online (port), Star Ocean 4, Infinite Undiscovery and...I think that's it. I rest my case. And now we are waiting another year on FFXIII, a game that has been in production since like 2005. And Front Mission. But, was there really a need to stop and make games like "Final Fantasy Tactics A2" and "Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers"? With all of this energy, gee, maybe SquareEnix could, I dunno, maybe make a decent FF game for the Wii?

yes, I know. i'm waiting for kingdom hearts and golden sun too, but I wanted a remake for FF VI and maybe VII and not yet another game....

I'm just glad that this isn't a remake like the many before. Now hoping the battle system and storyline plays faithful to the classic FF series of old. This alongside Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, Nostalgia, Golden Sun DS, and Dragon Quest IX are RPGs I'm looking forward to this year and 2010.

A new game, it's a RPG and it's great! - I mean way better than all the other crap on DS (like the braingames and cooking ones, someone may like, but give me my RPG). - but still I like to see something bigger, maybe for Wii or maybe for DS, something I really want to buy, like i had with kingdomm hearts 2 for my PS2. It's great that the appearance of the people change when the equip other armor, that way you really see that you have progression in the game, that you're getting stronger. Hope it's going to be a hit, and even if this isn't the greatest game everyone want this times, I still want to know more about this one!

Well, at least the description doesn't say "Final Fantasy XII-like battle system" I wouldn't play if it were I don't know what made be bored of Chronicles though - the kids or the BS.

I am sorry but a teaser site wasn't necessary for a DS, maybe if it was something bigger. And damn shonen jump for killing the surprise.

14 year olds are known for their hidden mysterious powers and the ability to save everyone but wouldn't it be interesting to see weakish grown-ups to try the same? Weird idea, I know.

    Finally! Final Fantasy Gaiden!

Hmm...I have the feeling that this was the unreleased(in the US) series of Final Fantasy games for the NES that was now to be remade and released. Seems like I was wrong.

Damn! When I read 'young boy and girl riding dragon' I got excited for a DS version of FFV (the 4 could be the crystals, I guess). I was kinda hoping this would be the SaGa game a lot of people were thinking it would be, but I guess this might be cool. I'm getting a little tired of the 'kiddie' Final Fantasy games though. It was really great when we just saw one new amazing Final Fantasy game come from Squaresoft every few years instead of turning it into Squeenix's cash cow. But I digress.

Why do Japanese keep using kids as their games'/animes' protagonists instead of matured and grown-up adults!? This has been a trend especially for those robot animes, for example, Gundam. To tell the truth, I am so tired of seeing kids as the protagonists!! They make the games or animes so childish!!

how is PS square enix's home console? they don't HAVE a home console, and if they did, playstation wouldn't be it. last remnant? star ocean? infinite undiscovery? it may be the least SE exclusive having console... nintendo racks them up left and right, FF XI is on 360 in addition to PS... XIII is 360 bound, so what does that leave them recently... XII and XIV. home console indeed.

a sword weilding, dragon riding young hero sent by a king to rescue a princess from an evil witch..... how very original.
seriously how about some new innovative story telling similar to the way the final fantasy series took their games from FFVII-X and onward.

I have a feeling that this isn't has big as it should be... with E3 gone pass and Hideo Kojima running the show with his countdown website... it's easy to say that the SquareEnix isn't a mess up, however I believe SquareEnix is having something bigger planned with this game

  • funktacious2

Am I the only one sick and tired of people whining about Square-Enix's affiliations? Anytime I hear someone say "home console" I want to bop them on the nose. Since when does SE, a third-party developer, have a "home console"? They make games for all ages and demographics, so it's only natural that they are going to want games on every console. This fact is evident with FFXIII on the xbox360 along with the exclusive Star Ocean. Just remember, SE IS a business after all. While they may try to keep the interest of fans in mind, they're in it to make money, just like everyone else.

wow that if F**** up. That was Square Enix's fun. Shonen Jump just killed it. It is more so like a "oh thats what it is..." instead of the excitement they were hoping to build from the wait. Shame on you Shonen Jump I expected better...

I'll give this new game a chance if it creates a secondary Final Fantasy series that revives the style of FF I-V

And while I agree with everyone that there should be a FF VI remake, the series needs to be redone in order. FF V needs to be remade before VI and VII and it needs to be remade soon. FF V is probally one of the most under-rated games in the franchise, and it deserves the same treatment FF III and IV got.

I have to say, I'd rather see all of the 2-D FF's remade into 3-D than another spin-off title. They redo the scripts a little and update them, put in a few extra features. Man, S-E, don't you guys know that your main series makes you a ton of money even if it's a remake? (Or FFT ) Stick to what you know. Put Matrix Software back to work on the rest of the series.

What the hell...why ds? Why couldn't they make a true sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics...you know like the first one on ps1 and psp.... not the dumbed down kiddie crap they push on Nintendo consoles. All the square stuff, besides the remakes (even those use kiddie graphics), are childish. Tactics For PS1 was a Mature tale of Political intrigue, war romance and betrayal... When they moved it to nintendo gba it turned into wizard of oz how can the kids get home....total bs if your a fan of mature mainline ff. They even had to take out weapon apperances changing (every weapon looked different on PS1/psp but on ds they all look the same) I hate Nintendo having a big marketshare this gen.... It means more kid crap gets put out. I am 30 and been playing FF since FF1 on NEs, but Nintendo went kid centric after SNEs, and when the Playstation launched bringing cinematic gameplay to a mature audience, is when I left Nintendo behind.
