Red Faction: Guerrilla getting three DLC packs

Demons of the Badlands to introduce new environment, single-player mission arc August 13 for $10; two remaining updates expected by year's end.

While PC gamers patiently await Red Faction: Guerrilla's belated "summer" release, their console-owning counterparts may be enjoying a second helping of open-world destruction for the recently released Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 editions of the game. THQ today announced a trio of downloadable content packs for Guerrilla, with the first set to launch on August 13.

The debut pack, Demons of the Badlands, will feature a new single-player story arc that takes place in a new environment not covered by the original game's open world. A handful of screenshots suggest the first DLC add-on will heavily feature the game's Marauder faction.

Demons of the Badlands will sell for $9.99 on the PlayStation Network and 800 Microsoft points on Xbox Live. No date or price was specified for a PC release of the add-on. The two remaining packs are expected to arrive later this year, with THQ giving no indication as to their content or cost.

Red Faction: Guerrilla is set on a terraformed and colonized Mars that saw an uprising of miners in the first two games. The third entry in the series depicts the struggle between descendants of a Martian mining colony and the totalitarian Earth Defense Force looming over them. In addition to physics-based destruction, Red Faction: Guerrilla allows players to kill one another with a very large bird.

I think DLC for a great game like this is a good idea, I don't know why people complain about it. Its not like it is forced upon us, we have the choice to pay for it. If you don't want to pay for it then don't.

This is a great game. A bit on the repetative side, but it is just so damn massive and there is so much hidden items and things to find and do. Great game. Go get it....

oh there is no point complaining about DLC, its definatly here to stay.
the games industry has seen a way to make extra cash from a game.
the only way to stop this happening is to simply not buy the content.
the only DLC that is acceptable are extra multiplayer maps, lbp content and like extra weapons and little stuff.
its a proper kick in the nuts when you see a developer releasing more single player story, it does imply that they snipped it out the game purely to squeeze a little more cash out!

I like Red Faction: Guerrilla, it is a good game but the playable area in the game is too small and the game is too short and repetitive. This content should be free, F&%$ you THQ.

DLC is for prolonging the game's lifespan, and to make up for lost sales via used game stores, so Volition isn't totally in the wrong here. You know who really does abuse the DLC system? CAPCOM.

@ Mr_Alexander It's not that people hate DLC. It's that this company just released this game less than a month ago and they already have a functioning DLC package that they will release onto the downloadable network so players will pay more money for their product. I haven't played Red Faction but people who have are saying that the single player was a bit short and lacking in story. You can't help but wonder why the company couldn't release this content with the original game. It seems to most that it was rather intentional, just so the company could milk a little more cash out of their newly released game. It's a business move to make money, that's understandable, but at the same time it's like a slap in the face to the consumer when the company tries to play this off as "extra" content when most people know full well that this "extra" content was simply content held back from the original game. That being said, I don't think that people dislike DLC, but you can't deny some of the more negative applications that DLC has brought (Such as releasing unfinished games that can be "finished" through downloading "updates" and milking more money with stuff that should have been released with the original game). Hopefully these things are just byproducts of a bad economy and when the companies aren't so worried about their overhead they'll clean up some of these rather dirty tactics.

I don't understand why people are always trash talking DLC, I agree that in cases where you would have to pay to unlock a function which was already on the game you already payed for; that is bad and it is also extremely rare.

The DLC for Red Faction and most other games are all-new which cost thousands of dollars and months to develop, how could you possibly consider them "stealing from you" or any variation of that if they're giving you the option to purchase a completely optional expansion pack which gives you hours of fun?

I'd much rather call a company who creates bad games or movies which cost a minimum amount of money to develop then sells it for full price "stealing from me" (ex. Uwe Boll).

I for one am very excited for these DLC's, it's just sad to see how many people literally hate DLC (I've seen people say "DLC is for idiots" several times on this site) DLC is no more a waste of money than an "average" retail game in my opinion.

Jinzo9988 is absolutely right. I remember being really excited when I picked up Need for Speed Prostreet and about the first race it asked me if I wanted to play the race with the current car or pay 160 points to unlock the Camaro. The Camaro was unlockable in the game, but the player had to play several races or you could just pay to unlock it. It ticked me off so much that I decided I won't buy another Need for Speed again.

    @xBudsmokeBCx187

I rarely have problems w/lag on my consoles now that the consoles have switched to broadband. The only time I've noticed massive issues is when I am having router or internet trouble (which is rare), but that ends up affecting my PC gaming too. I'm not sure what games you have been playing, but graphics have been generally improving over time. There are tons of games out there that graphically compete with any PC game & some that even beat them out. Metal Gear Solid 4 is a prime example. The graphics on there are some of the best I've seen in any game, PC or console alike. I admit free updates they give to most PC games are great, but that doesn't mean PC users never have to pay for extra content. It also doesn't mean all DLC costs money on the consoles either. There are lots of examples of free DLC in console games. I own every console on the market right now & when you start spewing out how PCs are so much better than consoles, you might want to pick better arguments. You might want to also consider that some people prefer console gaming. Personally, I have always & will always prefer console gaming. I have never been big on using a mouse & keyboard to control my characters (except old text based & point/click games). It's also nice not worrying about the specs of my rig to play a game. It's a preference though & I don't expect a PC gamer to agree with me. That doesn't make me think consoles are better than PCs. It's a completely subjective opinion.

  • gijas

Well, for the PC DLC is a pipe dream as we still haven't seen the actual game come out for our platform. So, even though this game started on the PC until this latest release we get jaded? I hate Bill more and more than ever before.

  • AiKago

"DLC is not created during the same development cycle as the game itself. Thus, it's cost of development is not factored into the sale price of the game. If you want DLC then great, buy it. If not, don't complain. Prior to XBL, you just got the game without a possibility of DLC. So I don't see the problem here. Just because they release DLC doesn't mean they purposefully withheld content from the core game prior to release. Besides, purposefully withholding content would be a slippery slope, leave out too much from the core game, get a bad review and fewer people buying your game, which in turn is fewer people to buy the DLC. I honestly don't think development companies plan to leave out content simply to sell it as DLC. The only DLC I buy are map packs. I just don't see the value of 2 more hours of gameplay for $10."

And you have no idea what you're talking about. I work in the industry. DLC absolutely is frequently created before the game launches. Content is regularly stripped from the main game to be sold separately as DLC. This is not conjecture. It's reality. Wake up.

"if you dont like the price dont buy it...."

Thanks, I won't. Oh, and know what? I'll also complain about it on message boards.

Nice. Guerilla is a good game, looking foward to the DLC. $10 seems like an reasonable. To those complaining about DLC, don't like it, don't buy it. Simple as that, whining does absolutely nothing, companies will still make DLC.

If you want to whine about DLC, do it about DLC that comes out on-the-day-of or one week after the game comes out and about DLC content that takes absolutely no effort to create.

Game 1: Ace Combat 6 - Over $100 worth of DLC for the game. They charge you for -plane skins-.

Game 2: Soul Calibur 4 - Wallpaper, pictures, and music for money. On release of the game, special edition buyers had a voucher code that they could punch in to download extra equipment. Either standard edition buyers had to pay for it or had to do without, I'm not clear on which is the case as I don't take my consoles online. Should have been included in the game disc, period.

Game 3: Street Fighter 4 - I'm not quite clear on this but wasn't there DLC available within the first week of the game coming out in the form of extra costumes? You can't even pick which individual costumes you want, they come in packs.

Game 4: Resident Evil 5 - Multiplayer modes for DLC. People are already paying for Live and Capcom wants to charge people to play the game online? A one time subscription fee to enable another subscription fee to function for your game(assuming you're on the 360 of course)? Laughable. I think this one came out rather quickly as well after release.

Complaining about content that extends the story and adds to the game in the form of new levels and/or areas to explore I think qualifies as real DLC. Fallout 3's DLCs, GTA4's DLCs, Red Faction's DLCs, these are the real deal.

PC gaming has dlc that you have to pay for too so I don't see why everyone seems to be saying "OMG PC RULEZ WE DON'T NEED TO PAYZORZ." Of course I'm sure it helps that whenever something popular for PC comes out you're sure to find it a couple days later on some torrent...

I've played lots of old games where a simple patch here, couple new items there, a few more quests, etc would have made it even better than they are now. Modern gaming offers the luxuries of an extended experience, but it doesn't force it down your throat. Personally some companies seem to handle this concept much better than others, but well-executed dlc definitely is something I'm willing to pay extra for, especially if I've managed to buy a cheap used copy from my local game store instead of the $50 three years later new copy.

  • Astraos

    Posted Jun 30, 2009 3:02 pm PT

These prices aren't high in the least bit. You all just want something for nothing.

@Budsmoke- we're glad you have money and can afford a gaming PC, but I cannot. And if I buy a game for my 360, its going to work. No messing with video cards and resolutions and whatnot.

Also, Mickleohb is right. My dad doesn't work at McDonalds, its the Chief Finance Officer of a large company. And is pay has been cut by more than a third. That is a significant amount. He has a mortgage and college tuition to pay for two kids. It wasn't a problem a year ago, but now it is. And videogame DLC is just not very important in the scheme of things.

  • TehEliteElite

DLC is BS money gouging on the PC, but for consoles, I suppose it might be nice if you're willing to pay money for stuff like horse armor.

  • MetalLordDCLXVI

    Posted Jun 30, 2009 2:58 pm PT

Game company price strategy, make a game that has just enough content for $60, then sell $30 or so in DLC so that you end up paying $90 for what should have all been in the original $60 package. Good example, Halo 3 , 3 DLCS for a total of around 18 MP maps, Crysis, 18 maps stock. Do the math.

  • noodles297

    Posted Jun 30, 2009 2:57 pm PT

DLC is bs. Expansion packs are good though, I think they need to save all their junk DLC content and bundle it all on one download or disc for like 20 dollars. AND the content actually has to be good. Not like 800MS points for crap like operation anchorage in fallout 3. Then they release something good like point lockout and the pitt for the same price...wtf

  • skinny_man_69

    Posted Jun 30, 2009 2:54 pm PT

I LOVE single-player DLC! It extends the actual game, usually has solid achievements and hopefully will have a length that warrants the price. Multiplayer DLC is okay, but I dont like it when all I am doing is paying $10 for three new maps.

  • Mickleohb

    Posted Jun 30, 2009 2:51 pm PT

@ Savior4Life-While I agree that this isn't that big a deal, I have to ask...Are you trying to be a jerk? $10 for you might not be a lot for you but people who work at McDonalds aren't the only people who are strapped for cash right now. And even if it is easily affordable there's still the principle of the matter. Will this DLC really add 1/6 of the original game's content? But as King_jeremy_77 wisely put, "no one is making anyone buy the dlc" so the point is moot.

  • g3toutj00

why would they do somthing for free?? it takes time and money to make the DLC content. If the content gives 2 hours of more play time then great cuz thats eqivilant to me going to the movies for 2 hours.
