Battlefield Heroes fully operational

EA confirms DICE's heavily stylized, free-to-play, microtransaction-supported PC shooter has "soft launched."

Battlefield Heroes is officially open for business. EA confirmed for GameSpot today that the heavily stylized installment in EA DICE's popular open-warfare shooter series has launched, with players able to download the free-to-play, microtransaction-supported PC game through its official Web site.

Battlefield Heroes will earn its keep through the purchase of in-game items and enhancements with real-world money. As detailed in GameSpot's most recent hands-on with Battlefield Heroes, the game features a robust lineup of character customization options, which play into the game's over-the-top aesthetic. Staying true to the series' roots, the multiplayer-centric game offers a number of vehicles and weapons.

Battlefield Heroes is just one of several franchise titles in development at EA DICE. In February, EA announced that Battlefield: Bad Company 2 would ship out on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in early 2010. Earlier this month, EA COO John Pleasants confirmed that Battlefield 3 was in development, noting that the game isn't expected to launch during the publisher's current fiscal year (ending March 31, 2010).

EA DICE was also eyeing the late-June window for its downloadable multiplayer-only shooter Battlefield 1943. However, that game's release on Xbox Live, the PlayStation Network, and PCs has since been pushed back to an as-yet-unannounced date.

    I won't get it simply because it includes micro-transactions. I would rather just pay up front then be told it is "free" but to get everything you will have to buy them al la carte. Don't get me wrong...this will probably go over well with some..just not everyone and especially not me.

    I wonder if it's a location issue. I have never, ever been disconnected by the game. I've had about 4 or 5 very isolated (crazy rubber banding) instances of good old fashioned lag, but otherwise lag free. My GTX275 runs this game stupid smooth, unlocked vsync reports 140-160 FPS non-stop. It's more cartoon than complexity, but looks good. You can probably run this fine on a laptop video card I imagine.

    You may say it works as much as you like, but I've been trying for 2 months, and it's never worked once for me!

    I enjoyed the few games I've played. I however will NOT pay for anything in the game.

    I'm excited by the prospect of BF3 and BF1943... I can't really say the same for Heroes but as they say, it isn't really aimed at the BF2 sect.

    Fully operational my butt.

    A gamebreaking bug still hasn't been fixed in the 2 moths since I started the beta...I can only play for 5 mins max and then I get disconnected.

    its a fun game but i think the beta tester reward was a bit insulting. they gave us 200 battlefunds and announced that we can now perma buy items (and only the battlefund items) but with 200pts we can only rent one item. they should of given us 580 so we could perma buy at least one of the most expensive items. my 200 is just gonna sit there in my account because i ain't wasting it ón a one month rental as my reward. game fun, extra addons soon mount up to expensive.

    I stopped playing the beta cuz living in Australia means nothing but lag issues. I don't like the feeling of being killed by an enemy that hasn't even showed up on my screen yet. I'm guessing being full fledged now means that problem's been fixed so I'll hop back on and see how it goes.

    I am enjoying the game a lot it is a fun game to play and its free so I am happy and BTW i did get 20 dollars of BF points for the add-ons trust me they don't help just makes your character unique thats all really ya there is some xp helpers or something but they are too much money and some1 skilled in the game can probably just make the same

    I''ve been playing for 3-4 months and it is very addictive. You can't beat free. The microtransactions aren't even necessary to play the game so if you don't want to buy a new outfit or XP boosts you won't fall behind the players who do.

    Yeah, I might try this out sometime. I haven't played the beta yet, but the gameplay videos look meh. I find myself playing alot more BF2 lately... especially since they announced BF3. BF2 never gets old.

    @BlueRaptor7

    Even in the beta, you realize there's more then the first set of missions? I'd suggest having more knowledge before posting next time.

    Maybe if they upped the mission count since beta, but I stopped playing after a day. But I'ma go now. I don't like comparing epeens.

    Posted Jun 27, 2009 11:35 am PT

    @BlueRaptor7

    That's such crap. YOU CAN NOT BEAT ALL THE MISSIONS IN ONE DAY. There's just not enough time in a day. even if you played 24 hours straight there's no possible way.

    Sorry guys, but the reason I said "FPS" was because I play the Commando, which means I'm in the first person scoped view 95% of the time. xD

    And yeah, its' possible. Quite possible. [:

    Posted Jun 27, 2009 9:15 am PT

    @BlueRaptor7 again

    It's not even a FPS, its third person. I'm starting to think you haven't played the game at all. LOLS

  • djpetitte

    Posted Jun 27, 2009 9:13 am PT

    @BlueRaptor7

    Lies! It would be impossible to beat all the missions in the beta in one day!

    BlueRaptor7: I think it's pretty much impossible to complete every mission in 1 day because you get more missions when you lvl up.

    Also, BF: Heroes and TF2 have nothing in common except the cartoon graphic.

    Played the beta, hated it.

    But then again, I'm REALLY not liking any of the new battlefield games, so it should be no surprise that I'd have such a distaste for a game that's even MORE casual.

    Plus, microtransactions really don't help.

    I dunno. I played the beta, completed all the missions (all of them) in one day, and didn't feel challenged at all.

    Its' a great casual FPS, especially for being free, but not for me. [:

    I'll have to agree with most of you guys. This is definitely a children's shooter. I got a Beta account and was initially excited about this game. But it's really not engaging, nor nearly as fun as really playing a Battlefield game. Battlefield 2 costs about $10. Go buy that and make it popular again instead of engaging in something as lame as Heroes. It's not worth the time.
