Bleszinski rules out horror project, teases more Gears of War

Epic Games design director shoots down rumors that he's working on a Silent Hill-style game, says "there's still a lot of stories to tell in the Gears universe."

Back in November 2006, former Microsoft corporate vice president of global marketing Jeff Bell made explicit reference to a "Gears of War trilogy" just weeks after the first Gears of War came out. And until Gears of War 2 was officially unveiled at the 2008 Game Developers Conference, both the Microsoft and Gears developer Epic Games refused to say a sequel was being planned. The denials came despite the fact Epic design director Cliff Bleszinski specifically mentioned a sequel during a session at GDC 2007.

Now, in the course of shooting down a rumor that he might be working on a survival horror project, Bleszinski has teased the (obvious) prospect of a third Gears project being in the works. Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine UK, the outspoken designer said, "No, I'm not making a horror game next. Gears is very much near and dear to me."

"There's only been two Gears games, man," he continued. "There's still plenty of opportunities for things you can do in a cover-based shooter, and there's still a lot of stories to tell in the Gears universe. I'm not burned out on that at all." As recently as last October (see video below), Bleszinski said there were no plans for a Gears trilogy, and that Epic was handling the franchises on "a game by game basis."

The designer's mention of "stories" points to new plot-driven content, not mere multiplayer map packs. So far, though, the only new post-Gears of War 2 single-player experience to be officially announced is the Gears of War 2: Dark Corners expansion. "New" is a bit of a misnomer because the one single-player chapter, called "Road to Ruin," in the expansion was cut from Gears of War 2.

Dark Corners also sports seven multiplayer maps and will be available worldwide on July 28 for download a la carte via Xbox Live or as part of the Gears of War 2: All Fronts Collection retail disc. Priced at $19.99/£14.99/€19.99, the All Fronts collection also contains three previously released maps, an Xbox Live theme, a collectible poster, a strategy guide, and a video introduction from one Clifford Bleszinski.

    Ok great game, happy thats its on xbox 360, for those xbox 360 owners, cant wait for the 3rd one... BUT WHY NOT ON PC?! OMG its like why cant they put gears 2 on pc. Why cant they put in that extra work to satisfy everyone? For someone who bought gears 1 on pc, I'm just a little disappointed.

    Its a good series. Its exclusive to the 360. And, in turn, its one of the few exclusive series to the 360 that's actually been and continued to be good. Not to mention its pretty much one of the very few new IPs this gen, in Microsoft's corner, to be successful (Kameo, Blue Dragon, Too Human... fail, fail, fail). With this knowledge, they know it'll sell... therefore it shall come to be.

    @FinalDuo1886 - Thats the way things work now, its getting really old whit evereyone b****ing about DLC. Dont want it then dont buy it, its been said a million times but that doesnt make it less true. And imo DLC lately has been more then worth the price, Just look at Fallout 3 and Burnout Revenge(the island).

    DLC is meant to expand the life of a game and for those who want it, its perfect for them. Also this GOW2 expansion includes the new single player mode and every map pack released to date for the game(flashback map pack too), If you ask me its worth 20bucks.

    If these games maintain the great challenge they have in them and also continue to explore on different alternatives... continuing to reinvent themselves... I am certain they will continue to be successful. We already have FFXI, and more are coming already so the sky is the limit.

    gears have died for me, they ruined it, they mucked it up, now if ever i play gears , i only play the first one, second starts annoying me already at the matchmaking....

    Maybe it's because I'm not a multiplayer guy, but I liked Gears 2 as much as the first. It didn't break any new boundries, but the single player was very fun, and had enough variation to keep me going. I think that those who bash Epic just on the changes they made to multiplayer are the exact same people who keep companies like Epic from changing their games too much.

    Well they ported gears 1 badly to the PC and didn't want to bother porting gears 2, not worth the effort and it takes time working on the next gears cash in. Dam Epic makes Capcom look good with all the cashing in and lack of qaulity....

    once the novelty of the first stage wore off gears 2 was the same game with slightly progressed story and a few new weapons. they really need to add to the gameplay without taking away from the basics. because lord knows if they were to drastically change the gameplay the same people calling for the change would be the first in line to bash it for being too different.

    If you don't want the same game with a continued story buy another game.It's your choice.They are not going to revamp something a whole lot of people like.They may add a few new weapons,characters,locations and maybe 4 player CO-OP.What shooter dose not do that.I've got no beef with continuing on in the Gears universe.I think there will be more than three by the time they stop.Plus it will take about six of them to get the multiplayer right. : )

    Gears 2 is like Michael Jackson doing a porn movie.Its just wrong and freaky to see a legend fall so hard.That is what happened to Gears 2.It was released with a broken multiplayer.That is disgusting and makes me nauseous.
    Epic are blundering idiots who are a disgrace to the industry.

    I'll be glad when they are done with these games. I never saw what was so good in them, found it to be VERY boring (1&2)
    I feel the same about halo too. The only good one was the first.

    Gears series are 'exactly' same?! are you stupid? why are you wasting your time playing too much playstation? they are all the same eg, their pads are all the same, that mean all the games are the same, all wii games are all the same cos of that wand, you and sheeps are the same cos when you play game, you don't read or cant read whats the story is about. i would buy 10 copies of Gears3 even if its still has same graphic and gameplay. go play Grand Turismo's every serie is 'different'

    Gears is a bit stale. ever wondered why Gears 2 got no awards from gamespot? it was exactly the same. like a sequel to guitar hero. if Gears 3 wants to even be recognized it needs to be different.

    Ive only played gears 1, but im happy to see this franchise go places. Trilogy's are boring now imo. I think if they can really flesh this world out and run it as a franchise then im game.

    Halo is another story. I think thats something that probably should have capped at 3 games, but who knows.

    Basically i feeled scre-ed over by the fact that this little ----- says that gears 2 aint coming to pc while they let out gears one...are the f'n mental..it's extra money for them if they put gears 2 and so on on pc...you don't have to be a accountant to figure that one out...

    Please fix the multyplayer you broke on Gears 2. It plays nothing like Gears 1. Why change something that was excellent in the first place ? No number of maps can bring players to Gears 2 unless you sort the inferior gameplay.
