AFL heading to 360, PC, PS3

Big Ant Studios' Web site confirms new sports game; online multiplayer promised.

With the Xbox 360, Wii, and PlayStation 3 already a few years old, Australian Football fans have long been wondering when their favourite game would be making its current-gen debut. Well it seems the wait won't be too long, because a local studio has confirmed that an AFL game is indeed in the works and is scheduled for the 360, PS3, and PC platforms sometime in 2010.

Melbourne-based Big Ant Studios is working on the game. A section on its Web site is emblazoned with the AFL logo but offers very few details on what gamers can expect from the upcoming sports game. Apart from the aforementioned platforms and the tentative 2010 release date, the only other thing confirmed about the AFL game is that it will "take advantage of the online capabilities of Xbox Live, Windows Live, and PSN. Two players will be able to play cooperatively or competitively online. Four players will be able to play cooperatively or competitively on the same console." There has been no word yet on a local publisher.

The last few AFL games have been Sony exclusives, with AFL Premiership 2005, 2006, and 2007 appearing on the PlayStation 2. While no word has been revealed yet on who the publisher is for Big Ant's new games, it seems their appearance on the Xbox 360 means Sony no longer has the exclusive rights to the sport down under. Sony, however, still has a PSP AFL game--AFL Challenge--due for release in July this year.

Big Ant was most recently the team behind the PSP version of Hellboy: The Science of Evil, as well as Spryo: The Eternal Night for the PS2. GameSpot AU has contacted a Big Ant representative and will be reporting back soon with more details.

    They should leave this game until the start of next year. Think about it - that way we get the Gold Coast team on there.

    Just found some screen shots and info about AFL 2010 from Big Ant at http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=731979. If Big Ant can deliver on what they have said I am officially VERY pumped!!

    aussies could never make a decent videogame on their own, hopefully they get help from ea sports or something

    @mglas72: Absolutely right. Although EAs 98 and 99 titles were not too bad for playability. I quite liked them. TV screen perspective is the key. Over the shoulder will never cut it for AFL.

    Still the best footy game to date is 'Aussie Rules Footy' on the Original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Actually, it's also the only playable one. Will absolutely demand a demo before even considering to purchase this latest attempt.

    Can't wait for this. I honestly don't mind if the gameplay is the same as AFL Live 2004. As long as it comes on xbox 360, I'm gonna buy it.

    football (soccer) for you bogans is the best sport in the world but AFL is an ok game but this year made me hate it so much coz richmond cant do anything but loose

    Pumped for this! Hopefully il be able to play more consistantly then my beloved Hawkas atm

    I'm not holding my breath on this one, there has never been a good AFL game to grace our presence. The game needs to be given a decent budget with a decent engine to complement it. I will need to see to believe guys.

    This game will be nothing without the help of 2K Sports or EA on board. Please don't make a crappy game that our North American cousins will rub in our faces till we die.

    I can tell you that, like AFL, Big Ant also owns the rights to NRL for the next ten years. They are contracted to make five games of each code over the next ten years, so their plan is to alternate, so expect an NRL game in 2011.

    I understand that my info is completely impossible to verify since my source of the info was talking to one of the developers there in person, but don't be surprised when it gets confirmed sometime over the next year.

    great. im from aus, already have fifa. a cricket game coming out this july and now afl. just need union and league and ill be happy.

    i also hope its like a fifa gameplay where you control passing better and its more of team play game rather then the previous afl's where you can run the whole field with the one guy.

    i don't think it'll be that great (i don't really play sports games), considering they made a movie spinoff and a RECENT Spyro game (all Crash and Spyro games AFTER Naughty Dog and Insomniac Games suck).
