Green Day Rock Band coming by year's end?

Source: A five-part radio station interview available on the front page of KROQ-FM's Web site.

What we heard: Quite literally, this is what we heard:

Billie Joe Armstrong: "Yeah we're doing a whole Green Day Rock Band." (emphasis added)

As for when that will happen, Armstrong said, "I'm not sure. Soon. Not like this week soon, but this year soon. I think by the end of the year."

News of band-specific rhythm games leaking out before official announcements is fast becoming a tradition. Joe Perry leaked word of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, while Activision CEO Bobby Kotick had only himself to blame for tipping people off to the company's next band-centric effort, Guitar Hero: Van Halen.

So assuming Armstrong isn't delusional, the question becomes what form exactly this Green Day Rock Band project will take. That question is made all the more difficult to answer since musicians aren't always known for choosing their words carefully.

After all, when Perry told Billboard.com about Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, the site was left with the impression that the game in question was Guitar Hero IV instead of a spin-off project. And what fan of Jimi Hendrix could forget former Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash saying that Activision was "doing a Hendrix one," when the publisher's plans for the legendary musician were apparently limited to a pair of three-song downloadable content packs.

To date, MTV Games has announced only two band-specific retail products: last year's Wal-Mart-exclusive AC/DC Live track pack, and this year's Rock Band: The Beatles, which was touted at the Microsoft E3 press conference. Beyond that, bands such as The Who, Boston, and Rush have received tribute in the form of downloadable albums and compilations. Green Day would be a natural choice for a downloadable album (perhaps the band's new release, 21st Century Breakdown) or extended song pack, but a full stand-alone game sounds like a bit much. After all, it's unclear if the Wal-Mart-exclusive AC/DC experiment was successful enough to justify retail releases for any single band shy of the stature of The Beatles or Metallica.

The official story: A Harmonix representative had not returned request for comment as of press time.

Bogus or not bogus?: Green Day in Rock Band seems not bogus, but are they big enough to land their own game? Time will tell.

[UPDATE 6/11/09] Well, that didn't take long. MTV Games today announced an exclusive deal with Green Day to release a three-song track pack and unspecified future projects.

its always funny to "listen" to ppl argure over something so little.. I aboslutely love Green Day and hope they do get their own rock band.. ppl say they haven't done crap to deserve one but w/e makes u guys happy go ahead and say it.. also, why are ppl so concerned about their label? ima go ahead and add my opinion to it and say theyre a bit of all "alt., punk, heavy metal, etc.." cause it just depends on what song ur listening to.. their earlier albums are more punk/heavy metal but who honestly cares about what genera they are? if they get this game out im gonna go and buy it like within the first week it comes out..

F*!@ NO! Green Day sucks, and that game WILL NOT SELL. 1. There are a lot better bands out there to make a gamer off of. 2. There are too many games with little plastic instruments. Just keep releasing DLC and call it a day, jeez...

I don't really see why Green Day would get their on game, compared to the bands that have their on game. Maybe they broke a record and I didn't hear about it....their a good band, I just don't know about the prestige they could attract out of a gaming market compared to other well known and loved bands through the varying age of players.

Well here's a big surprise. Some people love Green Day, some people consider them sell-outs because they wanted a major label and money. Because you wouldn't want money for your hard work, I'm sure. They just write the music they want to write, they're not trying to "insult punk" or whatever. They're defined as "pop-punk" (admittedly, that makes no sense). I like the band, I think their music is good. They're like any other band, just writing the music they want to write and hoping it's successful. Of course they took a major label, seeing as it's their job, they'd like to get money from it. Stop whining. If you like it, great, listen to them. If not, great, go listen to something else and quit hating.

OH BOY! I just love to buy every single insanely overpriced cash in these greedy ****s pump out of their ass every ****ing year.

Srsly, anyone who buys into this **** deserves a kick in the nuts.

Also, I know they once had MCR (My Crappy Retardation) on their list, but arent most of their songs, you know, challenging? and dont they usually NOT make your ears bleed?

You just wait, soon enough we're going to have Linkin Park Rock Band.
Cant wait to have some whiny emo **** SCREEEEEEEAMING IIIIIIIN MY EEEEEEEAAAARRRRS!!!!1 MY BRAAAAAAIIIN, IT WIIIIIILL, NOT HEAAAAAALL!!!1!1!!!1111! while I'm strumming on a plastic guitar that looks like something that belongs in an arcade with two other friends trying desprately not to set the TV on fire.

Yeah, okay guys, It was fun at first, but now its becoming more played out and old than Final Fantasy VIII.

Now excuse me, I'm going to go hide in my bunker.

Anyone who wants to argue with that needs to look up the Dead Boys, G.B.H. or G.G. Allin."
Maybe our days of punk rock with meaningful lyrics and social commentary is over just like metal nowadays is about who can scream the loudest and play the fastest and swear the most. My favorite 80's punk rock band (who is still together and making music) "Bad Religion" only got 1 song in rock band and it is one of their soft songs, not like their good ones like "Let them eat war" or "Delirium of Disorder".

All of you who are bashing this idea are blowing it way out of proportion. If you don't like it, don't buy it! Simple as that! And besides, it isn't even a full game, only three songs for DLC. This proves that people are so prone to jump to conclusions all the time...

I hope it's just a pack. To many band dedicated games.

I enjoy Green Day's Music, I don't see why people hate them so much. I just think they are alternative or Pop-punk (not punk, but Pop-punk) People should stop it with the genre thing and they didn't really sell out. They are just playing music they enjoy. They write their own songs.

  • missonrs

    Posted Jun 12, 2009 1:56 pm PT

okay im a huge green day and i love most of their stuff but i think the beatles are truly the only band that deserves their own game. They should rather put teir stuff as dlc and drop the price of dlc so you can get 45 songs for 60 bucks instead of just 30 songs.

"Green Day....the punk band...lol yeah right. Sid Vicious is rolling in his grave knowing a band who labels themselves punk is selling out to this crap. They write songs about nonconformity, and look what they do. They sold out a long time ago, but this just makes it more pathetic."

@jtuds, YOU ARE MY HERO for posting this comment. Many thumbs up.

I thought The Beatles Rockband wasn't a bad idea, but this, its not going to work as well as they hope I believe. They need to stop with singling out bands for their games, and stick with certain genres, or just a mix of everything.

  • Vic_N_Vince

    Posted Jun 12, 2009 9:14 am PT

I personally see this as a step down from "The Beatles: Rockband". Though there is a lot they can do with Green Day which makes the possibility of a GDRB interesting. Guess it's aimed to hit a more contemporary music audience.

Green Day is the most honest band out there. Billie Joe is complete genius. He writes music based on his life and opinions. Green Day has been popular from the day they released Kerplunk. If any band deserves a title from Rock Band, its Green Day. Call them sell-outs, pricks, douche bags...the fact of the matter is that they are un-arguably one of the best bands. If you hate Green Day so much...dont buy the game; that simple.

Damn, I would love a Green Day rock band. I've never actually played Rock Band before, but to be able to play all of Green Day's songs would be great. I'm not going to get involved with the whole rock legends status thing by comparing them to Aerosmith, Metallica or the Beatles, but I really like their music and I'd really enjoy it.

"You sir know nothing about music, Greenday will be as big as Metallica, Aerosmith and the beatles? That is one of the most ridiculous comments I have ever read."

if you don't think they have been and/or will be just as influential you are the one living in ignorance. Like it or not, they are hugely responsible for all of the pop punk crap on the radio today. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean they aren't making a huge impact on music today.
