Crackdown 2 four-player co-op confirmed

Fans of Realtime Worlds' Crackdown had something to cheer about during this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. As part of Microsoft's E3 2009 press conference, the publisher debuted the first cinematic for Crackdown 2 on the Xbox 360, at long last confirming speculation that a sequel to the open-world action platformer is indeed in development. Unfortunately, aside from naming newcomer Ruffian Games as the developer, Microsoft was tight-lipped on details.

This week, however, a product page for Crackdown 2 was set live on Microsoft's official Web site, divulging new gameplay information. The game will sport four-person multiplayer and competitive multiplayer for up to 16 players. A release date has yet to be set for the third-person shooter, though.

The original Crackdown gained initial notoriety for being bundled with a multiplayer beta key for Bungie's Halo 3. After scoring positive reviews when it debuted in February 2008, the title went on to sell nearly 500,000 units in the US during its first month on the market.

Prior to the game's announcement last week, a measure of controversy erupted over whether Microsoft would return to Realtime Worlds with Crackdown 2. With online reports indicating that Ruffian Games was stocking up on Crackdown alums for development on the sequel, Realtime Worlds studio head Colin MacDonald said in February 2009 that his studio was in "ongoing discussions" to work on a second Crackdown.

At the time, MacDonald said that he doubted "Microsoft would harm an otherwise fruitful existing development relationship by gambling on funding Crackdown 2 with a startup on RTW's doorstep, for obvious reasons." Currently, Realtime Worlds is at work on the open-world online shooter APB, which EA Partners plans to distribute in early 2010.

God,..."Gamer", how I hate that word, if someone asks your hobby, do some here acctually say "I'm a Gamer". Most people would laugh in my face.
Anyway, on topic, Crackdown was allright, but Open World games have come a long way, we'll see how it turns out.

And H...You know who you are........please dont start acting like him......

My friends and I played the crap out of crackdown. I didn't even play the halo 3 beta but playing it by yourself became a snorefest towards the end. I just ran through everyone to the boss and beat him down with my bare fists 90% of the time. Adding in mutants and such seems like a great idea and I really want to play the co-op mode. I would like them take some hints from infamous storywise as well. That game had some flaws but I loved the story. I wish it was multiplayer as well. Either way I'd buy this game it if was crackdown one with better co-op.

    @ thekey

Many bought Crackdown solely for the Halo 3 beta and discovered how awesome Crackdown was--so you're mistaken there, not everyone who got it just for Halo 3 tossed it out when that ended. You also forget that many others bought Crackdown on it's own merits alone, because of word-of-mouth.

The biggest thing you overlook is that Crackdown released almost 2 full years before inFamous--which should make a sensible person think....where do you think inFamous got some of it's ideas?

Cool sounds good. I didn't like the first Crackdown though enough to pay the amount it was, but now it's £ 6 in CEX there is a possibility that I might buy it.

I can't even begin to imagine the amount of sheer fun and mayhem as four fully powered Agents go leaping from building to building with high powered armaments. The only thing I could imagine making this game more fun is other super powers to go along with super strength and super speed...gun totting JLA/Avengers/Fantastic Four FTW!!! -=D

Why does at least one person have to go down the fanboy street in almost EVERY post and/or comments page of ANY form!

People, please get this: All consoles are for GAMER'S. which means we all live in the same communities of interest.

The only difference is the technology that is used.

Metaphorically speaking, if all people chose sides the way fanboy's do, then we might as well start calling ourselves blood's or crip's.

Please! Please! PLEASEEEEEEEEEE! Stop with the annoying fanboyism and the baiting. It gives me a headache. I just wanna play videogames with some cool people and have a good laugh at the world in general.

If you don't agree with the sentiment's in the paragraph above, then I feel very, VERY sorry for you. And hope that things change for you.

for all the kids out there: there is no such thing called PS3 fanboy because if u can afford a PS3 then u sure can buy the cheap arcade 360......
it's the owners of the 360 who r crying because they can't afford to play quality games n just have to get used to the tons of casual games they have(excluding mass effect and lost odyssey),,,,,
No offence meant as this is just a fact........

Brilliant! After times and times of them saying it won't be made. it's coming!

    I loved the first one.
I found this somewhere though. it's worth a read:

"The guy who invented the 'Freaks' in Crackdown 1 had people following in his work. And they sent people to blow up the Agency Building, and you wouldn't be able to respawn, So you'd die. So the Agency prevented all of the tower from blowing up, But you could never use the same human form again (Crackdown 1 Player Models) So you have new player models and You are a new person. The followers have infected people and they are evolved freaks. You are the Agent. Your job is to sort this mess out."

    Crackdown 2

I am so glad to see that Crackdown 2 is receiving all the hype and publicity that the first game did not receive.

Everyone has said all along that Crackdown received the best "word-of-mouth" type of publicity that any new game franchise did this generation. Not since the 8-bit days did a game become a best-seller like Crackdown did, strictly because of friends telling each other what a great game the game is, especially during the co-op online mode!

The fact that there is going to be four-player co-op in Crackdown 2 truly is a dream come true to all the fans of Crackdown!

Trust me, if you like Grand Theft Auto or similar style "sandbox" games, you will absolutely love Crackdown!

Crackdown is a best-selling Platinum Hit, which means you can buy it for only $19 at most stores. I highly recommend Crackdown. As long as you like the idea of being a genetically engineered super-cop who can pick up cars and throw them at gangsters who are voiced perfectly for their roles, you will love Crackdown!

    Posted Jun 10, 2009 9:26 am GMT

I hope a new developer doesn't stray too far from the original's gameplay and general feel.

Although the 'bosses' in Crackdown were a bit of a let down to be honest. I wanted to see big uber comic book-esque bosses. Tough, wild bosses that brought your power down to scale; to draw you into the world a bit more and challenge you. The game was brilliant fun but the common gang thugs and their bosses were cannon fodder. The vehicles were cool, as well as the explosions. The overall art style was nice touch too, but that leads me back to my bigger and better bosses issue.

What's the point of a super-cop without the occasional super-criminal? Give us some decent villains to thwart this time, not your run-of-the-mill nancies that we were cleaning off the street by the carload.

thekey, serioiusly now? First off inFamous isn't much like this game, Crackdown is more comparable to the recently released Prototype. As for the beta thing, that was a selling point, but this game stood strong and it's community stayed alive for quite some time. It was an awesome game. Not saying inFamous isn't, as I love it, but just because both games are open world doesn't mean they're up for comparison.

And tomrocks, seriously get live when this game comes out. I had such a blast playing this in co op.
