THQ to open Homefront, Red Dawn director writing
360, PS3, and PC FPS coming from Frontlines maker Kaos Studios; Apocalypse Now screenwriter John Milius penning story, set in North Korea-occupied US in 2027.
Back in March, reports surfaced that THQ was hiring for its wholly owned subsidiary Kaos Studios, the team behind Frontlines: Fuel of War, to work on an as-yet-unannounced project. Details of the game were not revealed, but job listings for the studio indicated that they were at work on a first-person shooter using "a world-class brand."
Today, THQ has revealed the game as Homefront, a story-driven first-person shooter set in the year 2027. Penned by Apocalypse Now screenwriter and Medal of Honor: European Assault director John Milius, the game takes place 10 years after the economic collapse of the United States, when the American Civil Resistance fights to reclaim the homeland from the North Korean Occupation. (Apparently this week's nuclear sabre-rattling was just the start.) The scenario is also reminiscent of Milius' 1984 film Red Dawn, which follows a band of teen resistance fighters after the US is invaded and occupied by the Soviet Union and its Cuban and Nicaraguan allies.
Fighting will take place in the disused malls and city streets of a crumbling America, and THQ has promised an "interactive and cinematic FPS experience." Players will also be able to take command of wide variety of aerial and ground vehicles, as well as an infantry role. There will also be a multiplayer mode, though no details were announced.
THQ gave no launch date for Homefront, but did say that new information about the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC game will be unveiled at the forthcoming Electronic Entertainment Expo. For more details, check out GameSpot's E3 coverage live from Los Angeles starting on Monday, June 1.
