$120 ticket to Tony Hawk Ride? - Retail Radar

GameStop lists X-treme price point for Activision's game-and-skateboard bundle on 360, PS3, and Wii, mid-October expected shipping date.

Tony Hawk has made a career pushing the limits of how high a guy on a skateboard can go, so it's fitting that his next game might push the heights of game pricing. Specialty retailer GameStop has put up product pages for Tony Hawk: Ride on the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii, with each version available to preorder for $119.99.

Tony Hawk: Ride, which is in development at Robomodo, will come packed in with a wireless motion-sensing skateboard controller that will attempt to create a more immersive brand of skating game than has been possible in the past. GameStop is also offering "guaranteed delivery on the street date of October 13th" for customers who preorder the game with overnight shipping. The previous console edition, Tony Hawk's Proving Ground, was released on a variety of consoles October 15, 2007.

While $120 clocks in at twice the price of a normal current-gen game, game publishers have been increasingly willing to explore the limits of what consumers will pay after the enormous success of Guitar Hero. The PlayStation 2 game came packed in with a guitar controller for under $70 in 2005. Since that time, rhythm game prices have surged, with a standard game-with-guitar bundle climbing to $100 by last year's launch of Guitar Hero: World Tour, and this year's The Beatles: Rock Band bundle with drums, guitar, microphone, and game going for just under $250.

More details about the game will be revealed at next week's Electronic Entertainment Expo. As of press time, an Activision representative had not returned GameSpot's request for confirmation on the Tony Hawk: Ride price.

Skate has definitely dethroned Tony Hawk as best skate game. Tony Hawks prime was 1-4

I've played since THPS1 and thought it's been downhill from 4 onwards. In my eyes Skate took over completely. I would love to try this new gimmick out, but I still wouldn't buy the thing even if it came at the regular $60 price.

I thought they pulled the plug on Tony Hawk's series after its last lot of lack luster sequels. There are better games out there lik Skate.

Nobody's going to fall for that stupidity anyway! Anyone who actually likes the Tony Hawk games, like myself, will just buy the game with no skateboard. They're bound to have it compatible with that miraculous joystick invention as well. But in the end, it doesn't sound like such an X-treme price to me. Activision just needs cash. You pay the 60-70$ for the game, plus the 50-60$ for the controller. Pretty average prices, if you ask me.

well looks like the wii isn't the only motion console anymore with games like this, PS3 SixAXIS, and the upcoming 360 motion camera. let the gimmik making begin

$120! Wow. And the board will only work with one game (so far)? And it's wireless, so there's more batterypacks to buy!

No, no, no. No more peripherals. People already have Wii Fit, Wii Zappers, Rock Band kits, Guitar Hero: WT band kits, extra guitars for EVERYBODY, and not to mention games that come WITH stuff. I'm looking at you Mario Kart. The human household is running out of room. I appreciate Activision trying to do something new, but there are better ways of going at it than a skateboard.

Funny how alot of people posting have forgot how many parents will be drove up the wall by their kids begging for this.

$120? Ouch, it just doesn't look fun to me... I could be completely wrong.. but I still have my Pizza Hut demo disc with the original TH for PS1 that will probably see more play time from me than this.

Ummm... skateboards break all the time. I don't know what your smoking. Mine last a month tops (Me trying not to break it), and that's $32 everytime I get a new deck. Sometimes, they can only last a week for me.

If you are willing to pay that much for this, you might as well just get a real board. At least a real one won't break like this thing will.

holy hell, if its double the price in america then imagine australia! DOUBLE THE RPICE PLUS INTEREST! Im thinking of a guitar hero world tour full bundle price for this thing, about $320?

Full game price america =$60 australia $120

    America price (double)= $129 australia $240

Plus we ALWAYS pay it out the ass with interests so im thinking about $320!

My god... even so... over $200 is too much for this damn thing

UM MR HAWK/ ACTIVISION WERE IN A RECESSION HERE!

this in no way interests me. saw some vidoes and doesnt look that good to me but i guess its still early. i think the board will get old real quick and people will wana play with a normal controller as least i would. graphics dont look all that hot and the game is simplified to the board, absolute pass for me and the price doesnt help either, id rather pick up 3-4 awesome games instead

as far as gaming goes Ill stick with Skate... I skate in real life, so this has no appeal to me, I dont think any one who is a real skater will EVER enjoy this game, because there is no way to emulate skateboarding. No matter how good technology gets, it just wont be the same as sliding a real doard down a real rail, so from a skaters perspective: this is garbage!

    @ dkpunk- wow thats sad!

you know what Im gonna do with my $120...... BUY A REAL BOARD, MAYBE 2!

Also, do people really never go outside anymore?
    learn to really skateboard?
    learn to really play guitar?
its just my opinion but all these peripherals for real hobbies are getting a little out of hand i think

Lol before this peripheral was announced i was slightly curious about this game i was thinking on buying it, but now its just stupid this type of peripherals are just plain stupid, buy a real skateboard if you really want to skate and go out on the street and skate.

LMAO, I wonder how long it will take for someone to have the board slide out from under them on carpet and fall into their TV or break an arm LMAO. Better get that Wii strap thing going LOL.

  • viewtiful_jay

    Posted May 26, 2009 7:10 pm GMT

Wasn't interested before, and I'm definitely not at this price point. What the hell is Activision thinking? It's not like the last few Tony Hawk games have been best sellers and people are beating down the doors for another one. I hope this flops, and flops big. Activision is a publisher that needs a HUGE slice of humble pie, like the one EA got last year.

  • AzureLivesOn

    Posted May 26, 2009 7:08 pm GMT

When it was originally added to the GameStop reserve system, it was listed as $200. $100 for a game and a guitar? Ok. But $200 for a game and a fake skateboard? Just buy them a real one and make them go outside already.

Despite the drop to $120, the major problem I see is this: no support. While the Wii Balance Board benefits from continuous support, the plastiskateboard is set to support... just Tony Hawk: Ride. Even if EA were to announce Skate 3 (inevitable, given the high critical praise and sales of the second installment), it'd be a cold day in hell before Activision was willing to let them share in periphial support in allowing Skate 3 to be played on their controller.

Then again, we never thought we'd see Final Fantasy on a Microsoft console. So who knows nowadays.

i fail to understand the purpose of the buttons on the board. granted i don't skate, and i realize that some tricks and stuff involve grabbing the board, but you won't actually be moving. just seems odd.

I foresee Activision with major financial losses. I saw a preview of this game on GameTrailers it looked arcady and honestly boring. In the preview it looked stripped down in gameplay and graphics and now they want to put $120 price tag on it, bad move. This is just one giant step back for THPS.
