Team Ico PS3 game footage leaked?

What we heard: As the 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo approaches, the game-industry rumor mill is spinning up faster than the Battlestar Galactica's warp drive. Hot on the heels of speculation about a PS3 slimline and game-enabled Zune phone comes footage of what purports to be the next game from Team ICO, the Sony Japan-based developers behind ICO and soon-to-be-movie Shadow of the Colossus.

As can be seen above, the game in question--if it indeed exists--is called "Project Trico." It also appears to be in a very early stage of development, with mismatched lighting and unpolished graphics--by PlayStation 3 game standards, anyway. The score is also placeholder music, lifted from the Coen Brothers' 1990 cult classic film Miller's Crossing. However, the trailer does resemble the teaser image (pictured) for the game that accompanied an August 2008 job listing (since removed) for the next project for Team ICO.

The official story: "We've made no announcement of anything called 'Project Trico.'"--Sony Computer Entertainment America rep.

Bogus or not bogus?: The trailer is fairly convincing in terms of its art style, and its depiction of a young boy befriending a Griffon-like creature seems like the sort of story that Team Ico would produce. However, the rough graphical style could also mean it could be generated by a few highly dedicated fans with some impressive computer animation chops. (Thesis project, anyone?)

However, one reason this might be not bogus is the fact that Team Ico has been teasing a reveal of its next game for quite some time. Initially expected at the 2008 Tokyo Game Show, it was hoped to be revealed at the 2009 Game Developers Conference, where 2009 Team ICO leader Fumito Ueda spoke at an enlightening game design panel. Unfortunately for fans, no such unveiling took place.

    I don't understand people who cares if the titles are exclusive to there console!
    What does it matter if it comes to Xbox 360 too? More people would buy the game and make it more possible for another game by team ico!

    Ico better not develop of Xbox, cause they're stealing all the Playstation games like Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and Final Fantasy.

    Yes but the baby had horns at the end. As you can see in the trailer, no horns are present on the apparent protagonist. The following quote was taken from wikipedia's article on Shadow of the Colossus concerning the correlation between SotC and Ico...

    "The world featured in the two is the same, with Shadow of the Colossus taking place at an unspecified time before Ico. Wander (the main character from SotC) sires the line of horned boys of which Ico's protagonist is a descendant."

    SotC was already revealed to be a prequel. And Ico very well may be the infant at the end of Shadow. Just to clarify. I myself am assuming that Fumito Ueda has decided to cut away from the story of the horned race of humans and start anew.

    I'm not that much of a fan, I enjoyed Shadow of the Colossus but never played Ico. I recognize that not all home brew videos are bad, I just think that there are some aspects of this video that make it unlikely that it is a fake. If it was just the visuals that would be one thing, but they nailed the look, animations styles, and the sound effects. All I am saying it is very unlikely that this is a fake.

    wow, this game looks like it could be really good if done right, and i'm not too worried about team ico not doing it right. i love the bird/cat, it looks like something i would love to have for a pet. can not wait for the game!

    It has to many little details that make it look real to over look. Things like random arrows poking out of the creature or tossing a barrel into its mouth and watching it chew it to bits. What would prompt a fake to include small details like that if it wasn't part of something bigger.

    @ Udmatador, The pic does look fake, but u need to watch the vid before making judgments like, there's no way that was done in photoshop. JJChalupa2000 pretty much said what I was thinking, there are elements of both ICO & Colossus and a combination of the 2 would seem like a natural progression for them. I think its for real...

    this picture is fake. the blending is horrendous. as cute as it might be, its a lie. anyone who's ever learned to use photoshop effectively can see that. don't want to shatter anyone ideas about the picture, but i will eat my hat if that is a real pic.

    I dunno, I am leary of all PS3 videos since the MGS4 debacle. Plus the X-Men TV ad that only showed cut scenes and the game looked like junk compared to what they have advertised. The art style tooks cool and it looks plenty polished. If this is real, it's impressive for the PS3, but I still have no urge to purchase one.

    I doubt this is fake. It has all the components of a Team Ico Project. A big open world, plus a character in the similar ICO style, interacting with another NPC type character. Also the attention to weight and scale is really common in his games. Plus it is too close to E3. Regarding the "rough" Comments. I do a lot of 3D work, I am still a student, but I can see through a lot of what they are doing. There is so much going on behind the scenes other than a few color correction issues. The fact alone that they are simulating Subsurface scattering on the ears as well as volumetric smoke that casts and recieves shadows in real time is already ridiculously good. I do think they may be polishing it more to get the colors right but I think from what it looks like they already have accomplished some big stuff. If it is a fan made piece, I just have one word. DAMN.

    looks like the real thing. i am so getting a ps3. just this game alone. i don't care for anything else. Shadow of the Colossus is hands down, easily my favourite 3D game. Team Ico, whatever they pump out next, I need to play it.

    That was quite moving even though it was a short trailer. There is a sweet connection between that kid and the bird cat. The game looks really interesting. Can't wait to hear more about it.
