Fallout 3 DLC coming to PS3 in June, two new packs in works

Just over a year ago at the 2008 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Microsoft announced that it had secured Xbox 360/PC exclusivity for Fallout 3 downloadable content. Now, three releases down the line, that agreement has come to an end, as Bethesda today announced that all existing--and some all-new forthcoming--Fallout 3 DLC will be making its way to the PlayStation 3. Operation: Anchorage will be the first content pack released on the PS3 in June, while The Pitt and Broken Steel will follow at four- to six-week intervals.

Bethesda has also confirmed two more downloadable content packs set for release on all formats. The first, Point Lookout, will be released in late June on the Xbox 360 and PC and will focus on a new swampland area. The second, Mothership Zeta, promises a "firsthand alien abduction" in late July on the two platforms. Both packs will cost 800 Microsoft points (£9.99, $9.99) and will make their way to the PS3 once the first three packs have been released.

In addition to the gamut of DLC, Bethesda has more retail releases for Fallout 3 in the works. Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #1 is an expansion disc containing both The Pitt and Operation: Anchorage, and it will be released for the Xbox 360 and PC on May 26 in North America and on June 12 in Europe. The second expansion disc, Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #2, will include Broken Steel and Point Lookout and will be released in August in both territories.

Finally, Fallout 3 Game of the Year Edition will be available in October on either side of the Atlantic and includes the original game plus all five add-ons for £39.99/$59.99 on the Xbox 360 and PS3 and for £29.99/$49.99 on the PC.

Micro soft is making the stupidest decisions these days. They are trying to make everything exclusive EVEN THOUGH it will eventually go to everything else soon so it does not matter AT ALL.

Is the DLC release for PS3 late June 2010? instead of 2009. Looks like it's going that way.

The only reason that the DLC went to MS first was bcasue they paid Bethesda to make the content. MS was only given a 6 month exlusive to the content and now behesda and sony are doing the right thing and placing all 5 DLC's on a GOTY edition. I rented this game and will be waiting untill the GOTY to buy it.

So, umm, why not just put out all the DLC that they have for 360 so far at the same time? I mean the obviously already have it for the Xbox... and I don't wanna have to wait 2 months for broken steel b/c I don't wanna go through Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt without gaining XP... Please Bethesda/Sony!

It was said that they bumped the date up to early July, they want to make sure it has no glitches like the 360 / PC does. Gotta love late released DLC, always superior.

What a company Microsoft is! Horrible! That is so dirty that they paid to get exclusivity for the first few months just so people would change to 360? Why would anyone do that? If they did, they're dumb.

about damn time. exclusivity is a complete misnomer these days. Unless its developed by a First Party team, its going to come out on something else.

given that fact that i will be moving out for college in the fall.. i almost figured i wouldn't be spending cold cash on games again. (short on cash) but this Fallout 3 GOTY edition for the PS3 is a deal I simply cannot ignore. I for one will definitely get this. I'll rob my co-workers coach bag if i have to. =]

It is about f#$&ing time Bethesda!! Why don't we just release DLC for every system at the same time? Anyway, had to get that out, thank you Bethesda for bringing it to the PS3! I am pumped! Might wait for the Game of the Year Edition though.

P.S. The Pitt and Operation: Anchorage are not worth your money.

An actual expansion like the three they have already put out? and as far as them putting out a disk with all the content on it at once, thats brilliant, maybe they could call it something like the GOTY edition.

They can keep their DLC. The game isn't even new anymore, and there are tons of other games out now, like Sacred 2, that I can posit as a timesink. Bethesda's little slap in the face smells a bit too little, too late.

  • Roachmeat

    Posted May 27, 2009 10:50 pm PT

Just great. Now another huge game along with Sacred 2 I'm going to have to contend with making time to play this year. Bethesda is going to have to make the GOTY Fallout 3 strategy guide into telephone book size for all those additions to it.

Alien abduction? Lame. They've always been somewhat of a side line joke, nothing concrete expect crash evidence. Why don't they do something interesting instead, or better yet make an actual expansion?

They could also fit all the DLC on one disc there's no reason to not sell at least the first 3 together.

  • yaba

    Posted May 27, 2009 6:25 am PT

It does not surprise me. True exclusive rights in any form for any media are rare. They always have an expiration date. It would have cost Microsoft an excessive amount of money to make the Fallout expansion packs licensed only to the Xbox indefinitely. Truly indefinite exclusive agreements are nonexistent unless the project was purchased outright.

  • Kravyn81

    Posted May 25, 2009 8:48 pm PT

Oh MS, is it not enough that you released your hardware prematurely to an unsuspecting public, and then you purposely mislead consumers into thinking that the only way to get DLC for a game is to buy your console?

Seriously. Why do people keep supporting this unethical company?

  • meateater79

    Posted May 25, 2009 8:19 am PT

I read somewhere that it does take longer to develop games and contents for PS3 because developers have not completely caught up with the technology yet. So when you take this into consideration, the XBox DLC 'exclusive' is actually a very shrewd move for Bethesda, business-wise. They took the money, released the DLC for XBox first, and develop them to release on the PS3. Ingenious!

Question: Is playing Blu-Ray on PS3 harmful to the console? I was warned against using my PS2 as a DVD player, but that was years ago. Perhaps it's different now? I'll be getting a PS3 after that $100 price-slash so many analysts are swearing will come, which will land it near the range of a fancier Blu-Ray player

  • StarlightHunter

    Posted May 25, 2009 4:42 am PT

@alien-killa, Because it is much harder to develop for, things take longer.

Why do ps3 owners have to wait for everything?

  • StarlightHunter

    Posted May 24, 2009 3:56 pm PT

Sony ovbiously paid for this content aswell. Microsoft are ovbiously not bothered if the PS3 gets this content or not otherwise it would still be exclusive so I'm going to tell all of you PS3 owner this.....get Broken Steel first so you can get to Lv 30 then get Anchorage second as it has the best equipment and The Pitt last.

Well this is good news. I own all 3 consoles but since I moved into a house, I no longer have XBox Live until I dish out $100 for the wifi adaptor whereas the PS3 has it built in so I no longer regret getting the PS3 version of Fallout 3.

  • hurleytime

    Posted May 21, 2009 3:38 pm PT

Actually, I'm surprised. I was reading through several comments (yeah, I was that bored :-P) and I only saw a couple of people complaining about the PS3 getting the download goodness. So, way to not be dicks everyone! The only sad thing about this is that I am going to be paying another 50 bucks than the people getting the GOTY edition since I have already gotten the first 3 pieces.

You know, it's odd... the three consoles this year, combined, would be the perfect console. I mean, think about it: the 360's online support, graphics card, and hard drive installs, the PS3's CPU and Blu-Ray, and the Wii's motion controls and mainstream appeal, plus the obvious mashup of every great exclusive title... I think every element of the Most Amazing Console Evar are present in this generation. I really like owning all 3 :-)
