300th Game hits Wii Virtual Console

N64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask becomes 300th title on Nintendo's retro-game download service.

One of the key features revealed at the official unveiling of the Wii back in 2006 was Nintendo's take on Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, the Wii Virtual Console. Launching with just 30 games, the service has gone from strength to strength, with Nintendo updating the store weekly with new content.

Now the Mario Factory has announced that the critically acclaimed N64 classic The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask will become the 300th game to land on the Virtual Console and will be available for 1,000 points (£12.50, $12.50). The game follows on from the events of the N64's other Zelda title, Ocarina of Time. Players once again take on the role of Link to unravel the plans of Skull Kid, via a reliving of the same three days in the game.

Nintendo's download success also extends to its original title service, WiiWare, which recently celebrated its first birthday. More than 81 games from more than 40 developers are available to buy on WiiWare, up from the initial offering of eight at launch. Adding to the list is Square Enix, which, having launched one of the first titles for the service, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King, is back with new tower defence game Crystal Defenders R2 available for 800 points ($10, £10), while Agetec makes its virtual console debut with Silver Star Chess for 500 points (£5, $5).

Uh, 1000 Wii Points is $10, not $12.50. Nintendo's conversion between dollars and points isn't stupid, remember? *coughs* Xbox Live Marketplace *cough* Please know that I have all respect for the Xbox Live Market, the conversion of dollars to points is just stupid though. Nintendo's is more natural. You know, it makes SENSE.

On a note more closely related to this article, it's cool that Nintendo has made good use of Virtual Console. There are still some games I'd like to see on there but they've given out a good selection, and it only keeps growing. Great job Nintendo!

This is one of the best games ever made on any console. I'd buy it for a 100 pounds if I didnt already have the original N64 game and the Special edition cube version....and I've got 3 versions of Ocarina of Time. Maxxed out all the user accounts and started playing it on an N64 emulator on my pc. Hahahaha. Its that good though.

Now the only game I'm left wanting on the VC is DK64.

at metal militia, its about $70 around here used, if your lucky. Its getting rare evidently. I bet you could prolly get in on ebay around $40 though

sounds like a good deal, but how much does the LOZ Special Edition for the Gamecube now cost? If its around $15, then I would totally go for that, because it had Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Zelda 1, and Zelda 2.

But still, Majora's Mask on the VC is pretty sweet! /\_/\

    @ VenomRitual
Eh, some rare-but-popular games can easily get up to $50, if Nintendo ported some of those to the VC we could get them for much lower prices.

Well, say what you want about the Wii (and I've said a lot myself, mostly negative)... but this is a landmark that gamers can be happy to see. VenomRitual is right, but this opens up some of those games to people who just won't do that. As a gamer, I can't see how this is anything but good for the gaming community.

or you can buy an N64 for $15. just saying

BTW, Isn't 1,000 Nintendo points $10, 1000 MS points is 12.50. Is that correct?

Wow, why get this for 1000 Wii points when you can get this, OOT, TLOZI, and TLOZII for the same price on a GCN disc, and play it on a Wii? That is what I do.

    @ Mr_Fujiv1

Maybe you feel that older games have "passed their time", but what's the point in even making games if they will just stop being played one day? Should people just stop watching classic movies and their most memorable tv shows because ten years have passed since they were still on-air? No. A game can't be judged by time.

This might actually make me play my Wii again since I never picked up Majora's Mask when it first came out on the N64

  • Rect_Pola

The time mechanic was clever and well used. This game pushed a LOT of side questing since the main quest only had getting the 4 masks.

my personal favourite Zelda game, hopefully Nintendo can make it 60 fps, I've played it on a PC emulator in high res and it's a night and day difference to the N64 and GC versions I own. If Nintendo made some nice graphical improvements like that, it would give people a great incentive to buy it all over again.

1000 Wii points costs 7.00 British pounds to buy. I dont know about the States but in the UK, no, 10 quid doesn't equal 1000 points.
